I'm thinking about Typepad, so I'd like to hear others' weigh in on bloghosts as well.

I use WP. I think that it allows more control although there is a lot to learn about php and such to keep things going.

Here is a link to several comparisons:

Are you referring to a Wordpress.com hosted blog, or would you be hosting Wordpress yourself?

YES! Wordpress is better than Blogger. If you're a coder or know anything about hand writing code this is a great platform. Not to mention the huge community for support and plugins. I've been blogging for many years trying many different platforms and would have to say Wordpress is the best blogging CMS out there. Once you go Wordpress you wont go back.

      Hey,
I've been thinking about making the switch myself but will probably be hosting it on a server (an updated desktop) at home. So I've been doing a lot of research, mostly focusing on Movable Type, Wordpress, and hosting. I still haven't decided yet, because MT is supposedly better in high traffic situations while WP is 100% Free. I might need a commercial license for MT, and I'm trying to minimize my expense, so I am probably going to just go with WP. Here is a link to a (busy looking) blog about moving from Blogger to WP: justinsomnia.org/2005/03/moving-from-blogger-to-wordpress/ Hope this helps.

But you cannot add adsense and widgets anymore...

I will say blogger is for beginner and worpress is for advanced blogger.
    1. meredilse
      Kiwipulse,

In that case i need to stick with blogger lol i m total noob.
    2. ramayadi
Although blogger for beginner, but if you create your own themes for blogger, it much difficult than create for wordpress.

It's really a question of what is right for you. Kiwipulse asks a good question. Also, is Blogger working for you? If so, why switch? If not, what about it is not working? You need to know that before you can talk about an alternative.

Sorry, this is a better link.

And it "requires some technical know-how" as mentioned in that blog. You might find a more appropriate link for your level of expertise by googling "move from blogger to wordpress".

I like Wordpress, because you have so many options and the whole editing of your blog is setup so much better there.
I have a blog there that I am working on and hope to get my own domain sometime in the near future.

I've been using Blogspot for my main blog, but decided to try Wordpress and even LiveJournal as other platforms for online writing. LiveJournal is terrible in comparison to either, Wordpress is good as it allows to have posts AND pages. So does TypePad, to which we need to add some hype, as well. I do agree that WP is really good when you know HTML, but I'm in no mood for learning it. One part of me says that if you're using a medium, you've got to learn it, but a blogging platform is really but a platform for me, and I've already learnt more about HTML in the past year than I ever intended to :P.

I suppose a good question to ask, is how serious you are about your blogging. From what I know, switching from one platform to another will cost your blog a search engine history, and if you're determined to become successful, you need to plan for the future, really. Then again, success is determined by relevancy and content, and neither platform is directly responsible for that.

    Just wanted to add also.
The bloggers who do not use Advertising on their blogs should use Wordpress.

When I started the same discussion, people voted a lot for WP

I would like to know if blogger allows javascript, because the free wp blogs do not.

I wrote my own blog system, and to be honest I'm quite happy with it.
Data for you blog doesn't come from a single database anymore, but from various data sources, such as accounts on other websites, statistics of your MMORPG characters, foto galleries (Google, Flickr) etc....

Writing your own system is fun and very educational... AND it fits all
    your personal needs

I did use Wordpress before, but it has become so slugish (and PHP is bad
    enough as it is...)

Either way, whatever system you intend to use, it should at
    least support the following:

    - CSS styling
    - XML-RPC implementation of at least one Blogging API
    - Comment support
    - Trackback support (if you want it)
    - OpenID support (Don't make people register on every site)
    - Captcha support
    - RSS export features
    - .... anything else you can think of?

    Hey Timothy,
Very cool blog and intense list of features, don't see how anyone could possibly add to that list.

I've used blogger for about 5 years with any blog I've had. Always been good enough for me.
  19. kaybday
I've used Blogger too, and it's really very fast for me--right now my blogs are hosted there. Wordpress was quick too, though--there are more options with design. I did Wordpress (the application, not the dot com) for a commercial site I wrote for for awhile--thought it very easy to use. I tinkered with Typepad last year, and ended up really just being lazy about changing things. But I'm leaning towards paying Typepad for the Pro package--I really like the flexibility with the sidebar. I dunno. I'm trying to decide what to do; I can see I will have to do something ultimately to meet the goals I have--to keep people on the site longer and push those page views up.

I have been on Blogger for 4 months. Imported blog to Wordpress a few minutes ago. Feeling lost right now.
  21. richardworks
Well if you ask me I prefer blogger over WP. I have nothing against WP I just felt more comfortable with blogger. =p

There seems to be a persistent myth that Wordpress cannot be used with AdSense. It can. Just check this link:
    wordpress.smullindesign.com/plugins/google-adsense-widget
Just one random example but there are more widgets available that AdSense on Wordpress.

As a noob, I have been having two problems with Blogger.

    a) I edit posts and they dont show as edited (eg a space between paragraphs) - I do click on the Save button.

    b) Archives show up in chronologocal order and not as Categories.

Is this something that can be remedied on Blogger?

    Would appreciate any input.

In my opinion you are better off with a self hosted wordpress blog than anything else..

Besides there being hundreds of templates you can use for design, the open source plug-in section is second to none..

If you take your blogging seriously invest in a self-hosted wordpress blog..
