How safe is your neighbourhood? would you let your kids play at the local park unsupervised? Is it safe enough for you to go for a walk at night and not be harrassed?

my neighborhood's quite safe. There isn't a local park and if there were I'd hope my neighbors wouldn't allow their young children to go alone, no matter how safe they felt it was. I do walk at night, quite a few of my neighbors also take evening strolls. I've made it a point to wave and make eye contact with most of my neighbors so I'm very comfortable out wlaking after dusk.

Not remotely safe to walk around at night! In the day I've had a group of teenage boys start kicking me and I had a guy spit in my face, and at night girls are attacked by psychos with hammers (literally happened), have people attempt to rape them and are generally molested by creeps. A male friend of mine (the gentlest guy you could ever meet) was beaten up by a gang of teenagers last year. The local kids attack students because we don't usually fight back, according to the police...nice area...

Sounds a bit like our neighbourhood - it used to be safe until major highways were built giving easier access to and from all of the suburbs of Auckland. East auckland where I live Is known for its beaches and desirable females which attracts street racers and gangs from other neighbourhoods.
I used to walk home from the pub all the time and can safely say only once did it result in a fight. But since then the streets are much worse - Stabbings, fatal shootings, deliberate hit and runs, people being attacked with samurai swords, as well as the usual sex crimes. And most of the time they're all random attacks. All blamed on the "P" or crystal meth problem we have here. For such a small country we're 4th in the world for its class A drug use.
So there was a time when my folks were happy to let me go out all day and not have to worry about where I was, but nowdays I just couldnt let my kids out of my sight for a second -
Weird thing about where I live is that it's not a major city...it's a village! we don't even have a greengrocer here! There are 3 convenience stores and that's pretty much it! The students of the university have set up a facebook group about our area "The population of a small village, the crime rate of inner-city London"!

Yep its the same story here, although there are things to do but its "cooler" to hang out in dark public areas get F*cked up, break the law and then blame it on your drug addiction. All because thats what the bloods and the crips do on the american tv shows and movies (apparently) - so personal responsibility isnt enough, they have to blame it on the media.

This is very interesting to me, because my neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago is very mixed class neighborhood that is very safe. I have walked home a mile from the train station at midnight and no one has ever bothered me.
And I live two blocks from a high school and a large park.
Of course, 6 blocks east and its a totally different story. Chicago has had a rash of gang violence that has made it the nationwide leader for teen shooting deaths.

Well... the city I live in is made out to be a lot worse than it really is. Where I live it's quite beautiful - right next to a big park (designed by Olmsted - same guy who designed Central Park), and an art museum and the hospital. However, if you go a couple blocks in one direction (the other side of the hospital), it gets a little rough. I don't do much walking around alone at night. The park is pretty safe though during the day. I go running there all the time and there's always lots of people there - still don't know if I'd necessarily let KIDS hang out there alone though. That's a little different...

I wouldn' go out at night here, the forrest is kinda dangerous to play in at night, the ground isn't terribly even. Raccoons like to terrorize the chickens but my boarder collie is on partrol. Other then that my place is pretty safe, no other humans about.

How safe is your neighbourhood?
Not real safe. Some guy knocked on my neighbors door and he had his toe shot off. People knock on my door all the time in the middle of the night asking for people or weed. They party all night and that's just the things I know about.
would you let your kids play at the local park unsupervised? Not even if it were safe.
Is it safe enough for you to go for a walk at night and not be harrassed? I am not walking at night. Not here. -
My town has quite the reputation. And yes we have had gang fights, we have drug problems and violence from drugs. I also live 5 minutes away from a neighboring town which has had shootings. However, the violence in my town is all amongst people who have issues with each other. Goes along with the drugs for the most part. They consider this an urban area which lowers the sales tax and it is a cheaper place to live. Half of the area of the town I live in is on welfare. However despite all of this, yes I would walk down any street in my town at 3 am. No I wouldn't let my kids play unsupervised but that goes for anywhere. I leave the druggies and hookers alone cause as long as it is not affecting me or my kids I don't really care what they do. People know this so I am left alone. There are actually many people who know me well and would go to jail for me if anything were to happen to me.

Our buses in my town only run until 9 PM. Probably safe, there are females who drive the bus at night. I drive for the next county over which up until recently had a high ranking in our nation for being the wealthiest county (though you wouldn't know it by our payscale
) I drive my bus until midnight and absolutely nothing happens
Now it is probably fair game riding the bus in the next town over where the shootings occur! -
Holy crap!! The worst I have had on my bus is a guy who got very nasty with a couple of our drivers (didn't help that he was intoxicated) and when I picked him up 4 local cops watched him get on bus to leave town lol. And why one of the four male cops couldn't take him instead of a female bus driver I will never know
Though I have the reputation for being the cool fun bus driver but also the driver who takes no crap at the same time.

Eh not too bad here. There is only one street and a couple of parking lots in my town that anybody can get a $17 parking ticket on. Just don't block the street sweeper that's $75. It's not very often you actually see somebody get a parking ticket here and nobody puts money in the meters except for out of towners. He gets more of his excitement being harrassed by the $5 hookers we have. No joke they are really $5. And yes they are horrifying

My neighbourhood is very safe. Its the kind of area where neighbours are on first name basis & stop to chitchat over the hedge. Even the pets are friendly (apart from the frequent dogs/cats disagreements) My cat knows everyone and regularly gets invited for fish dinners. I stroll round anytime of the day and night. But no, kids should never be left unsupervised no matter how safe.

I think for my neighbourhood it depends on if your from here or not. Depends on how old the kids are for the park thing and how street smart they are.

This area is relatively safe, although I wouldn't allow Punky to go to the park unsupervised, anyway.
But I don't let me guard down, we have young gang members expanding their territory towards where we live now.
Our previous neighborhood was safe from people, but the bears, snakes, and coyotes posed a problem. And the neighborhood before that was totally unsafe, which is why we moved when I got pregnant. -
Our neighborhood is quite safe, but the world has gone mad. That's why I talked my husband into getting us an alarm system. The pittance we pay each month gives me peace of mind. If I were raising kids, there is no way they could go anywhere without me and I'd probably home school them. Yep, I'm a bit of a cynic.
