Ok - Lets settle this fair and square!
How many of you think that we should just drop the Religious and Political discussions all together?
Or...
Do you see value in these discussions and believe that they should stay here on the BC?

We aren't going to drop the religious and political threads. The reference is misleading. The removal had NOTHING to do with it being about God. It had everything to do with certain people attacking other members. There are thousands of threads about God and politics.

Just wondering what the point is to try to gather support for an idea that the administration has said again and again isn't going to happen. Seems more like stirring up trouble without any rational goal than anything else to me. That's why I asked why--I was hoping you had a better reason than that.

Obviously not. It's kind of like children taking a poll to see whether or not they should be allowed to skip school and eat nothing but chocolate cake. The outcome is 100% meaningless, since it's not their decision to make and it's not the kind of decision that a "majority vote" is going to influence.

Religious polls about God equates to you believe what you believe and I'll believe what I believe and let's talk about something else.
Political polls ... You've got to be kidding! This is the most electrifying political season ever and we need to be involved in order to make suggestions and come up with solutions. President Elect Obama will lead and we United States Citizens need to follow in order to make our country get back on track. -
Religious and political discussions here are often more civilized than some other forums I've been to. So, uh ... no. Leave them alone (not that anything's gonna happen to them, anyway).
-
I would leave BC myself if religion and politics were not allowed. There is only so far you can go with lists of bloggers favourite colours, favourite pizza, most horny pop star, or most successful posting. Sheesh. I say MORE on religion and politics. How about a faith and spirituality section like the politics one?

Is a privately owned site on the internet supposed to be a democracy? What does this have to do with the poll? Probably nothing but someone mentioned democracy. I usually do not even get into these discussions but this one caught my eye. I have too much to do to get caught up in these debates. I go with what the admins say since they are the elected leaders. (?)

i like those discussions but they're just fun. you can't change anybody's mind here or anywhere, it seems to me. so i'd like to see 'em stay. i have no problem with having the occasional comment removed.

I think we need to raise the stakes a little. For example, spreading hate and bigotry should merit a short-term (12 hour?) suspension for first offenses in addition to the posts being deleted. The 38 hour suspension might be a bit much. It might also be good to reprimand people for engaging in perpetual logical fallacies, but that would be more of a group thing.
Feature request: Suspend a member from a group for (user-specified) hours.-
"Feature request: Suspend a member from a group for (user-specified) hours."
Did you mean group?
Or...did you mean the discussion board?
Suspension of thread and/or toxic contributor to the thread in question? - Yes
A more desired outcome than actually having to delete a thread and destroy valuable content.
However...they (the agitator) would of had to of clearly & unequivocally broken the Guidelines as defined by the admin.

I think they should be kept but in their own forum. If one is started in the General Discussion, it should be either moved to the appropriate forum or deleted. Those of us who post to an incorrectly placed thread will just have to suck it up when our posts are deleted with the thread...the price we pay for participating in a thread we know is wrongly placed.
I don't think they should be prohibited wholesale, but definitely prohibited from the General Discussion. -
How about having a separate forum for meaningless drivel?
I jest. I think it should all be in together. Bring the political dicussions back into the fold perhaps. I miss them. Make the board bigger so we can see more discussions at one time. And filter (like the shamless or the favourite filter). Maybe you could apply more than one tab to your discussion like gmail.
Am I being too complicated? -
Kind of new on this one, but I think its OK to have these discussions.
Frankly, I cannot stand the religious ones, so I just stay away from the threads.
Politics? Love 'em.
Realistically, both subjects tend to engender heated debate, also OK as long as the discussion can be civil and respectful. -
I thought the whole point was to be able to express views within a controlled environment. Don't see how you can't discuss
politics and religion as they matter in some way to the majority of people. -
religion and politics is taboo in face to face communication. u can't really talk about this with your co workers or sub friends. it makes perfect sense why people would want to talk about this online. these topics are deep rooted for most people. i say bring it on. lets just try to make it funny and interesting.
lets not get so angry or rude.-
I keep hearing this repeated here, but I wonder how many of us actually see this play out in real life? I think once upon a time it was taboo (or maybe not--maybe it was just something people said back then, too), but I haven't ever really noticed it being true in the flesh and blood world I inhabit. I can't recall having worked anywhere (and I've worked everywhere from restaurants and discount stores to law firms to tech companies) where these subjects haven't come up at least in passing--and often in spirited debates.
-
I stand by what I said. It really is true. In Canada we do not blah, blah, blah, about politics or about religion with those who are strangers or even with those who are casual acquaintances.
Perhaps the introduce yourself and immediately enter into an in your face spirited political or religious debate is an American icebreaker phenomenon. If so, I hope it's not viral.

Haven't checked in for about a year and I'm finding alot of interesting discussions now. I found that one of my old discussions from august 2007 was brought back from the dead this year in august 2008 and things got a little crazy and the thread was locked (it was about christian podcasts). But, as some have said, to eradicate religious and political discussions would be to take the fun out of our freedom of speech. So I vote for continuing all sorts of discussions alive and well (as long as individuals don't go psycho and start insulting others). We should always strive to keep an open mind, but we should also know what we believe and be able to stand by it and defend it in a reasonable fashion. So, I'm glad to be back and plan on cheking in more often!!!

Interesting. This is new world of hope, change, and censorship.
Let us talk about whatever we want to talk about. I pledge to be honorable, civil, and respectful of others opinions, but I reserve the right to disagree, and be steadfast in my beliefs.-
Here's an excerpt form what one of the co-owners of BC said in the very first comment responding to the posting of this misleading thread. I have supplied the bold lettering for clarity.

"We aren't going to drop the religious and political threads. The reference is misleading."
The political forum is located one click away here www.blogcatalog.com/politics/discuss
And when members post a discussion on politics there is now a link in the original form creating the discussion that can be used the thread posts to the correct forum.
