Okay, they aren't exactly like in the cult movie Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, but they could make you sick. Florida's tomatoes have salmonella. I really wonder how they got that disease. McDonalds isn't serving tomatoes in its restaurants now and the tomato farmers in Florida are a bit screwed by this farming disaster.

So are you eating/buying tomatoes any time soon?

I'd just gotten some really nice tomatoes at the store for a BLT. I didn't die from them-- was a great sandwich, in fact-- but it's a scary world we live in when eating healthy can kill you.

This is scary stuff indeed so I'm gald that you blogged on it. The full advisory is here www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/tomatqa.html#advice

The states and countries whose tomatoes are not affected are: Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Puerto Rico, Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands.

The US Food and Drug Administration has expanded its warnings to consumers nationwide about the purchase and handling of tomatoes in the wake of a salmonella outbreak that has now sickened 145 people. Texas now reports 56 cases of salmonella food poisoning and New Mexico 55.

"So are you eating/buying tomatoes any time soon?"

No, I am growing some in my garden though. Hopefully they will be safe to eat.

    I wouldn't eat them because I don't like salmon.

That is kind of a funny title tho, I guess that movie had something after all.

In all seriousness, it is scary.

Its seems like these days, nothing is safe anymore

I just posted a tomato recipe that you won't have to worry about:

Just read it ... sounds delish I love tomatos! And growing them yourself is one way to make sure they're okay to eat.

I am growing my own tomatoes so hopefully they will ripen soon. BTW the stuffed tomato recipe sounds yummy.

I remember that movie. I guess now would be a good time to show it. Is there a reason why no station shows that movie any longer? Just something I wondered about for years

My favorite part of the movie is when they go into a tiny room and the guy has no room to make a speech and knocks the picture off the wall as he is talking.

No plans on buying tomatoes. But this reminds me of a while back when there was a scare over some strawberries being contaminated with Hepatitis. Scaaaary.

In Austria the press makes a joke out of it.

I have a hard time understanding the hysteria. 145 people got sick so far. So what? Chances a are probably higher that you get hit by a car.
  12. mikeny07
Some people eat them every day for lunch. I think one or two people died already.
  13. theyshootmusic
Sure ... that is a sad thing.

I'm wondering how many people get shot / hit by a car / killed by falling flowerpots every day. Noone plans to get rid of guns / cars / flowerpots but everyone is canning tomatoes.

Whered you hear about the salmonella? some bad fertilisers can cause salmonella if used wrong so it might of just been a fear thing saying it was the tomatoes...salmonella is a bacteria so it could of been the fertiliser spray had salmonella passing it on to the tomatoes...
  15. theyshootmusic
Yes, that seems to be the cause.
The tomato topic gets a lot of press attention: tinyurl.com/42p6no

I like tomatoes but i prefer organic or non fertiliser sprayed...prefer no bacteria in my tomatoe lol...

I think Organic food is an overkill
