Oooh - I was looking for another oft-covered song to feature for my newest Squidoo lens. Thanks for the idea!

      Hey, any time!

Out of those three I would have to say Clapton.
But you forgot another great one, the Grateful Dead:

Well..... I wanted to narrow it down to three..... not exactly sure why

Pfft, you didn't have room for 4?
      Admit it, you forgot.

      Arghhh, okay, okay, I forgot!

lol ... I was just going to mention the version by the dead.
For me it's a toss up between Dylan & Clapton. However, I voted for the original because it was the original.

I like originals most of the time too. I just happen to like GNR and it stuck with me

That's interesting IMO the guns & roses version is just too in your face loud. It's also too long. The telephone dialing all that background choir noise simply takes away from the theme which is dying. Once that "competition" kicked in I clicked the kill switch. To be clear I have never valued what G&R have to offer so they would never appear on my favorites list.

have to go with G'n'R on this one.

The drums and lead guitar do it for me.

    Voted for Clapton.

GN'R's version is second for me (I never actually liked BD's version)but as with most of GN'R, it's too long. The should have cut the track before the dialing of the telephone started. From that point on the rest is just trying to be epic for the sake of it. The song's about dying, you don't need a little humor gimmick or a ridiculous choir backing you at the end. The guitar is killer though.

Thanx! I like G'n'R version most of all!

i like dylan, but that's not one of my favorite songs of his.
an obscure new york band called "television" did a wonderful version of it on a live album.
don't much care for the guns n' roses version, but i've never much liked them as a band anyway. other than "mister brownstone" which is a pretty amazing song.

Television was one of the great bands of the 70's. I had no idea they did it, though--I'll have to look up that live album.

As a confirmed Dylan freak, I prefer his version (or versions, I should say, as it's been on a number of live albums--and, actually, the one on Before the Flood is better than the studio version, as is the one with Roger McGuinn on one of the Bootleg Series discs). Clapton's and the Grateful Dead's are good, but I could live without the Guns N' Roses version.

    GNR. Nuff said.

To me, Dylan's spirit is always near a far horizon. So while I love all those great artists, Dylan is at the top of my list when I am asked to pick the best from the best.

    Dylan

Or how about Clapton, Dylan, The Band, and some others at The Last Waltz? Or am I imagining that that happened?
    1. drjay1966
They didn't do that one at the Last Waltz (or, at least, it's not in the movie). You may be thinking of "I Shall Be Released" or maybe "Forever Young" (though Clapton wasn't on that one). There was a big sing along on it which included Clapton and some of the Band and others at the big 40th Anniversary thing, though (most famous at this point for Sinead O'Connor being booed off stage, shortly after she ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL).

Am I a Dylan nerd, or what?

@drjay1966, you do know your Dylan
