So recently I read (and reviewed) Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night. I have to say I am officially in love with him. I was just wondering if there are any other Vonnegut fans out there and if so (besides slaughter house V) which book by him that you would recommend for me to read next!! Talk amongst yourselves.

Cat's Cradle is by far my favorite (and I think I've read them all...)

    Long live Bokononism!

I also like Galapagos a lot, and the Sirens of Titan.

I agree. I read Cat's Cradle last year, gave it to my husband and he read it.

Vonnegut had such an interesting story-telling voice. In that book his POV drew me in right away.

This was my first Vonnegut book, and it's still my favorite.

      its all lies!!!
      lol
right now, this is a lie....

Bonkononism is seriously my new religion. Lucky me, lucky mud.

I recommend "Welcome to The Monkey House". It's a collection of his early short stories. I discovered it more than 30 years ago and have bought at least 20 copies over the years for friends and coworkers. It's one of my all time favorites and I reread it often - it's like visiting an old friend. The introduction alone is worth the cover price. :^D

I do love short stories so I will definitely be looking into this one! Sounds fantastic. I have also heard good things about Cat's Cradle. Thanks for the advice!

I have read a lot of Kurt Vonneguts books. Breakfast of champions is an absolutely amazing book. As I was coming across the country on a train in the beginning of January I met someone who I thought would really appreciate it so I gave my copy away. Vonnegut was an absolutely brilliant writer. Welcome To The Monkey House is a really awesome book too, it has a lot of really memorable and well written satirical comedy in it. If you want to get deep into a story I would get one of his full length books.

Ahhh I want to read them all. I am just going to have to go on a Vonnegut binge and knock half of these out.
  4. gerryPlanetEarth
I would say all of his books are worthwhile reading and the movie makers are missing the boat not making movies or animated cartoon movies of more of Vonneguts books...

Television could benefit making weekly programs based on Vonneguts many characters and ideas instead of the boring csi type etc. programs...

My favorite Vonnegut character is Kilgour Trout the science fiction writer...

Aside from Slaughterhouse-Five, I've only read Welcome to the Monkey House and The Sirens of Titan, though I've got Cat's Cradle in my backlog. Monkey House and Sirens are both excellent books, though. Very worth your time.
  6. Prongs
    Thanks again for the advice!
  7. legbamel
The Sirens of Titan is my favorite, and Galapagos is also terrific.

I just finished slaughter house and bought monkey house per someone's recommendation on bc. It is the first time I have read his work and yes I could say there are the beginnings of being a fan. I love his writing and stories.
  9. aningeniousname
I have never read him before but I have just got Slaughter house five and I'm looking forward to reading him.
    1. Prongs
Well I would def. suggest starting with Mother Night. Its short and simple and easy to fall in love with
  10. busylizzy
My hubby has read everything by him. He started reading him back in high school.
    1. gtally
Busylizzy, Me too! Read 'em all. Vonnegut's one of my favorites.
  11. Prongs
Wow impressive. It's going to take me awhile to slog through it all but I am sure that it will be well worth the effort

Ice 9 has to be one of the most terrifying concepts I've ever read. Vonnegut, after surviving the Dresden carpet bombings, never lost his love for absurd destruction. He is constantly doing in humanity in silly yet terrifying ways: ice ages, neutron bombs, sterilizing viruses, etc. The guy was funny, scary and sad all at the same time. Something for every humorist to aspire to...
    1. Prongs
I just finished Cat's Cradle. And yes Ice-9 was terrifying. I loved the reoccurring symbolism of mud thorough out the work though. Vonnegut is god.

I am rather fond of "Timequake". Yes, it's one of his lesser works, but it's also the last one I read just before I met him at a lecture in Oak Park, IL. So much of his lecture riffed off themes in "Timequake." He was funny, erudite, charming. He died not long after wards and I was so thankful I had the opportunity to speak to one of the greatest writers of the our time.
    1. Prongs
That just made me ridiculously jealous!
    2. Stillthinking
It was amazing. I regret not paying the extra money to go to the cocktail reception afterwards. I did stop and say hello to him while he was outside having a cigarette after his lecture. I should have brought my copy of Timequake for him to sign.
    3. Maladjusted
Still: That is awesome. I remember thinking that Timequake had this great Elegaic quality about it, like all the old things coming back, Kilgor Trout, his sister, like a farewell. He did write a bunch of others AFTER it didn't he, but I remember that it was like a swansong.
    4. Stillthinking
I'm not quite sure. I am ashamed to say I haven't read more of his work. As a speaker, he was so delightful and I am so thankful I got to meet one of greatest writers of the 20th century.
    5. Prongs
God yea that is so cool. I met Ron Paul once before I knew who 'Ron Paul' was. I saw him giving a speech in Boston and met him afterwards, and then a year later he blew up on the political scene. I wish I had asked more questions.

Im a huge fan! I think my top 3 are:breakfast of champions, sirens of titan and slaughterhouse 5.

currently Im half way through galapagos
    1. Prongs
Hm I have yet to read Breakfast and Sirens, although my friend just finished Sirens and loved it. I'll admit when I read Slaughterhouse when I was younger, I just wasn't ready for his brilliance and it really turned me off him. I am so glad that I am getting back into his works. I think I am going to go with Breakfast of Champions next, unless I can be persuaded otherwise...
    2. stellak
i highly recomend breakfast of champions
    3. Prongs
Excellent! I will add it to my pile then. I am trying to give myself 5 books between Vonneguts or I will probably never read or review any thing else! Bah!!

    1. Prongs

His satire in that work was pure freaking genius, and Bokononism!? Pretty much my new religion. I loved the idea of pressing the souls of your feet together. The irony/pun is just beautiful! While the book was hilarious, it was kind of depressing to think about in alot of ways. I guess that is part of his goal though...
  16. Maladjusted
I remember that one of my favourites was: "God bless you Mr. Rosewater."

    -Mal.
    1. Prongs
Oh I just found that the other day! Will have to add it to my list.
    2. stellak
it was the second vonnegut book I read and you must add it to your list!
  17. celticmusicfan
I read Galapagos and others. I love his writings.
    1. Prongs
      Right he is so amazingg!
  18. singaporecaddy
Big fan- did you know Vonnegut did interviews with Kilgore Trout?
    1. stellak
those were pretty cool. Trout is such an amzing character.
    2. Prongs
I didn't! Can you find them on youtube?
    3. singaporecaddy
Kilgore is Vonnegut's fictional character that appears in a lot of his work and he even attributes stories within his stories to Kilgore- so no youtube, but there are written interviews where Vonnegut essentially interviews himself.

It would be interesting to see someone do a film about that whole series though.
    4. Prongs
Haha yea I am such a goof. Somewhere in the back of my head I knew that when I was typing it and I meant to correct. I've always thought many of his shorter work would make amazing film or tv series. Some of the wonderful messages in the novels would probably be lost in translation though.
  19. Stillthinking
I just got a copy of Breakfast of Champions! Can't wait to dig in with my old friend Kilgore Trout...
    1. Prongs
Excellent! You will have to tell me how it is!!!
  20. celticmusicfan
Yes yes yes Breakfast of the Champions is still my fave.
