What are some words that you go out of your way to NOT use?

lol, mine is a simple one...necessarry...

I can't spell it for the life of me (as you can see). So unless I have spell check that can fix it for me, I don't use it.
    1. freeatlast
mmm. necessary is annoying to spell. agreed.

'to touch base'. It's supposed to mean 'to contact' in Singaporean English. But I mean.. touch base... sounds so sporty and lewd at the same time. o.O
    1. calais50
I was going to say that one.
  3. josephgelb
    you get a speedin' ticket
  4. DOUGGOFFdotCOM
Have a hard time saying the word "diva", it just doesn't sound right to me.
    1. hatingtherain
I really hate that word too
  5. jadedconformist
    naivete'.

I hereby declare war on the intellectual elite!

    "that"

This was a big no-no when I was in radio because - 99 times out of 100 - it was unnecessary.
    1. hatingtherain
it's ten times worse when spelled "thet"

or when people spell "than" THEN

It makes me want to die
  7. legbamel
My "pet peeve" word is moist. I can't believe that people would use that word to describe food in a positive way. Bleh!

Radioflyer, I agree that that is unnecessary in most cases.
    1. aningeniousname
      Mmmmmm Moist.
    2. legbamel
Now, see, that describes you perfectly! But cake?!
    3. aningeniousname
Well I for one like my "cake" moist, who wants dry "cake"?
    4. freeatlast
"moist" seems to be disliked by a lot of people... and I still haven't figured out why it is so disliked by so many... because it sounds like it's meaning? what about moistness is so disturbing? hmm.
    5. legbamel
Yes, because it sounds squishy and it fills your mouth when you say it. I associate it with dirt and mushrooms and rotting.

Awesome ... it seems like the person has no other superlatives that they can use. And please, don't add "Totally" in front of it!!
  9. nothingprofound
Denial-saying someone is in denial because they don't feel something you think they should
    1. JonnyDunMind
DENIAL really annoys me, when its used to confirm something aswell. If, for example, someone says, 'I don't suffer from 'insert mental illness' and they go, yup, he's in denial.

    "dude"

    I'm not a dude!
  11. Epicharis
'closure' - anyone who uses that word in relation to emotions makes me want to hurt them.
    1. hatingtherain
If you hurt them would that finally bring you closure?
    2. Epicharis
closure is for people who watch Sandra Bullock movies...
    3. Stillthinking
I don't know, The Lake House didn't give me any closure.
  12. Stillthinking
Paradigm shift. Most people who use it don't actually understand it and the people listening usually just nod and smile.
    1. freeatlast
good choice... not a fan of this phrase.
  13. cookingasshole
    surreal and anything meta-
  14. hatingtherain
    uber

    "supra" anything
    1. delightw
As well as many above I would add compartmentalize...totally!
    2. freeatlast
i admit to using "uber" too much... but it might have something to do with my time in germany.
  15. hatingtherain
Some clever person on this forum should write an essay, using all of these words.

That would be funny to read
  16. Stillthinking
The paradigm shift was surreal and provided uber-closure to the dude.
    1. hatingtherain
      lol....good job
  17. MissSuzie
I don't know why, but I have the hardest time pronouncing 'invitation' so I try never to say it or shorten it to just 'invite'.

I know this isn't the Shameless Blog Promotion forum, but I actually have a series of posts on this topic: leastlikelytoblog.wordpress.com/category/words-i-could-live-without/

'interesting.' i say and feel compelled to write it even though i know that it doesn't mean anything, and that what i'm describing isn't really interesting (see what i mean! it's really interesting).
