MMM.. Music. Music. MUUUUSIC.

Had to get that out of my system. Summer time means good records, or let's rephrase that as "summer time needs good records". So what have you been listening to?

Any fresh releases that you absolutely love?

Let's start off the discussion with some off-the-wall obscene opinions; Iron Maiden should not tour, the new Metallica albums bite and I hate the beatles.

So right now I'm listening to some hip-hop, Redrama - the Getaway and I'm thinking about how much auto-tune new records actually have.

Well 1st of all there is no such thing as a record anymore. Yes,I love summer, but I haven't really heard anything wonderful this.summer. I have gone back to old school this summer and have listened to a lot of motown, percy sledge, dianna ross, and ike and tina

    Lots and lots of Moonsorrow:

No such thing as a record? I don't quite get that.

I mean, I understand what you're saying but records still get released just as well, if not primarily in physical form but through labels. Aren't those releases records? And using Spotify (www.spotify.com) is a great way to listen to records of your choosing, without purchasing the actual record.

You've all heard of spotify right? The client that has all the major labels interacting and releasing their catalogue to spotify, so that you can listen to almost anything in the world through a legal channel.

And even if you haven't heard something wonderful, doesn't mean it's not out there. Right?
    1. HollytheHousewife
I thought they were called albums. Anyways it doesn't make a difference. My gramdmother saved all her vinyl,we just don't have anything to play them on.

Oh yea,and on fri. Nights lately we've been listening to marvin,al,and the temptations. When we have girls night we make up our own little dance moves to the songs.
    2. flamingpoodle
Records (as in vinyl) are actually still manufactured and they sell quite well.
    3. freshtunesfinland
And they're even bringing the cassette back! Well, like vinyls it will go into the market for collectibles, but still awesome!
    4. acousticguitarist
no not the cassette, it is atrocious, it is compressed audio ... i don't like mp3 although I use it on the web because it's transportable
    5. freshtunesfinland
It's not usable, but it is so nostalgic!
    6. thegoodknife
I still buy vinyl records all the time.
    7. flamingpoodle
      Vinyl records I can understand.
      Cassettes? No.
    8. freshtunesfinland
      Why not?

Imagine vinyl - like releases, like a Gold Cassette edition of your favorite album? Wouldn't that be awesome?
    9. flamingpoodle
Because the sound sucks unless you have one of those chrome tape players, and you can't find those tapes anywhere.
    10. acousticguitarist
The compression ratio on audio tape is atrocious.

Radio compression is often bad too, it's compressed to be above road noise.

      Here is a real Compressor.

I have no idea who the artists are out there anymore. My favorites when I was younger:

    Billy Joel
    Elton John
    Dan Fogelberg
    Air Supply
    Journey
    Reo Speedwagon
    Pat Benatar
    The Eagles
    Olivia Newton John
    Conway Twitty
I love 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman
I guess that's enough for now.
    1. freshtunesfinland
That's how it goes. But there's nothing wrong with more old-school artists; most bring back a lot of memories. I love it when you forget a song, then dig it up after like a decade and you almost have a mental breakdown because of the flash backs.

It's like jazz and blues, only seems to get better with age
  5. celticmusicfan
You just reminded me that I have to get my vinyl records off my shelf and listen to analog magic. I love 60's orchestral pieces on summer. They make the heat bearable.
  6. freshtunesfinland
Ah I'm green with envy. I can only imagine how good it will sound off vinyl. I know it doesn't actually improve the quality or anything, quite the opposite, but there's just something about vinyls!
    1. acousticguitarist
I prefer the sound of vinyl, My turntables out of action but I have hundreds of rare brilliant albums

A good cartridge and stylus is much better
  7. acousticguitarist
I've added a few youtubes, they are not the albums, just a taste

Gonzalo Rubalcaba Solo and also with Charlie Haden (Jazz Piano)

Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba - Segu Blue (African)

Here's something by him, album is different eepurl.com/b3rf

Anouar Brahem - Voyage du Sahar (Oud)

Josie Mel - This Whole world eepurl.com/b3q5 (reggae)

    This is Good eepurl.com/b3re

Pat Martino - We'll be Together Again (Jazz Guitar)

Antoine Dufour - Existence eepurl.com/b3rk (Acoustic)

You being somewhat of a guitar virtuoso, I'm looking forward going through that list.

Anything really off-the-shelf that you still have up your sleeve?
    1. acousticguitarist
      What style.

I've got a lot of music, nothing heavy though, I stopped listening to that in 1972
    2. freshtunesfinland
Nothing heavy. I'm thinking of something or everything laid back, more on the contemporary classical axis. You know, something that goes well with some hot weather and cool drinks.
    3. acousticguitarist
      I'll think about it
  9. HollytheHousewife
Ooh I just thought of some other good ones

Janis joplin, I luv bobby mcgee
    Hendrix,of coarse
    Doors
I love love love bob marley
    Doran doran to
  10. freshtunesfinland
Ah I love the Doors and Hendrix, of coarse

I'm currently sitting on our balcony and listening to some 60's jazz compilation I discovered. I only recognize less than half of the artists, but I'm all about new acquaintances!
    1. legbamel
Are you a Sun Ra jazz fan or do you like less experimental stuff?
    2. freshtunesfinland
Sun Ra is great, the more experimental the more attention it needs. That being said, I don't mind more experimental jazz, but with hot weather and some cool drinks, it might not get the attention it deserves.
  11. JonnyDunMind
    :O
    @Freshtunesfinland,
By bites, do you mean you don't like the new metallica album? I think they came back with an incredible album.

I mean, I also like the black album and even *cough* St.Anger *cough*, and didn't really like master of puppets or the older albums, so I suppose I started listening at a different time, and heard the newer albums first.
    1. legbamel
You don't like "Master of Puppets"? Is that legal?
    2. JonnyDunMind
I retract that statement, ride the lightning is the one I don't like. And the actual song 'master of puppets' is amazing.
    3. legbamel
      [Whew]
    4. JonnyDunMind
I had a feeling you were loading a gun, and tracking my IP adress to my home.
    5. legbamel
No, I was just trying to find the number of the proper authorities to whom I should report such statements.
  12. freshtunesfinland
And I recognize that it's just a matter of opinions. I'll agree that the the order of albums, which one gets to know a band influences the ordeal a lot and coming from the other end has probably made up my mind about what type of music they "should" put out. After all we're only human.

I like the stuff prior to load and reload. Those two I can somehow get with, but then the new stuff is a whole no-go for me. It just sounds so over-produced and tedious, like their trying to play using the same vocals and chords over and over again. But, like many things in music, there are a wide ordeal of opinions and I still respect them as artists and people.

Kill 'em all and Ride the Lightning are two of the first albums that I remember properly. Sentimental as ever
    1. freshtunesfinland
And no, it's legal. Due to my opinions I can only reside in selected countries on the globe, Finland, Switzerland and Texas.
    2. JonnyDunMind
Haha, I do agree, load and reload is awful. It's even boring.

And I only like the song 'so what' on garage inc, because it's so tongue in cheek.
  13. freshtunesfinland
For a band with such epic releases in the past, releasing new albums gets harder every step of the way. What I mean by that is, take st. anger for example. They couldn't go with what they had done in the past, so they did something a little different, then they got st. anger. The crowd that liked the releases in the past got disappointed because it didn't hold up to their expectations. Some did appreciate going for something different and loved the album, and you can't please the whole crowd so might as well make sure someone ends up happy.

    1. JonnyDunMind
True. Where do queens of the stone age go afer 'Songs for the deaf'?

and it must be horrible for the foo fighters repeatedly being told 'color and the shape' was their best album.

Some bands experiment, some bands perfect the sound that made people originally like them, and some musicians bugger off to do something different.

      Some musicians do all three.
    2. freshtunesfinland
Foo Fighters is an odd ball though; they've got Dave Grohl. Everyone just loves him, especially the press.
    3. JonnyDunMind
Thats true, it is a bit odd.

Mabye he's a scientologist / stonemason with awesome connections :O
    4. freshtunesfinland
I really wouldn't be surprised. He could even have some pigeons nesting in that hair of his, who knows?!
  14. stellak
I like to listen to bossa nova, it so mellow and it makes the warm nights more bearable
    1. freshtunesfinland
Do you listen to it while sleeping?

You know you've worked with music too long, when you actually hear music in your dreams. And I'm not even kidding.
    2. JonnyDunMind
Not to seem like I'm hounding you, lol, but I've had that happen! I decided to stop listening so much for a while

Some people have art dreams, and music dreams.
    3. freshtunesfinland
Haha, a little stalking is always a positive thing!

At first I thought I was imagining it, hearing music in my dreams, who does that pfft. But then it kept happening, so I kind of had to either decide I was mental or that it was actually going on. I took the latter, seemed easier.
    4. freshtunesfinland

    5. stellak
I listen to it right before bed
    6. legbamel
I'm listening to the One Note Samba right now. Doesn't everyone have a soundtrack to their dreams? (No, really, I just assumed that it was to be expected.)
    7. freshtunesfinland
I don't really know. But since you're not really using your senses, I mean you're using your nerves in your brain but not your actual senses, so "hearing" music in you dream, is not really "hearing" but your brain playing background music. It's trippy if you start thinking about it.

Like waking up within your dream, what's that called.. being conscious that you're dreaming and being able to control what you do in your dream and what not. Anyway, I had that happen to me once, and I thought it was funny and woke up. Kind of pathetic, I know.
    8. JonnyDunMind
      Lucid dreaming.

Its partially what my blog is about.

I asked my mum if she knew it was a dream the other day, in a dream. Flying is pretty cool too.
    9. stellak
Im listening to Desafinado, the astrud gilberto-george michael version
    10. freshtunesfinland
Dreaming is awesome. I've dreamt of such weird things, but I think the greatest is a friend of mine who dreamt she was a sandwich wrapped in plastic and it turned out to be a nightmare because she couldn't eat herself. Yeah.
  15. appgiveaway
I have just added a music app to my website www.appgiveaway.com and I am giving 10 copies away, summer time means excitement.

    1. freshtunesfinland
No I haven't, but I'm on their myspace now. Cheers for the tip!

My!My! Time Flies by Enya is so awesome. I love the electric blues guitar. I also like Rachmaninov's Concerto in E Minor. So cinematic and so soothing. I am loving the new album of Snow Patrol .
    1. freshtunesfinland
Snow Patrol are really neat. There are a lot of mellower, soothing bands out of Scandinavia right now. You can check out the post on our blog about pg.lost, a Swedish post-rock band to get to some other artists like that. There are links to several soothing, mellow and really talented artists there. Let me find a link.. hmm.. tan tan.. blog.freshtunesfinland.com/?p=154 there!
  21. celticmusicfan
yeah scandanavian bands are good. hey it looks like a lot of people here are into vinyl stuff. maybe we should brag about our collection and turntable in your blogs in the future. show show show!
