I had to write a Letter to Senator McCain for his comments on Medical Marijuana.

I know the actual letter I sent him will never be read but I figured some other people might like to read what I wrote him.

I'm not sure I agree. Maybe the use of marijuana also dulled the senses which led you to believe it dulled the pain.
-
Eh, Marijuana doesn't dull any senses. And yes, if used medicinally it does help people with chronic pain and without most of the side effects modern pills have.
It's a tricky subject though. Most people advocating that the stuff should be legalized say it isn't addictive at all, which is bull. I'm dutch, I've seen plenty of people addicted to it.
But at the end of the day if someone has to choose between crap like morphine or smoking this every now and again I think it's a lot safer for them to smoke some marijuana every now and again.
Good luck either way drutopia. -
I will agree with XIII that it can be addictive. The problem is using drugs like Vicodin, Codine and Morphine would lead to a bigger addiction. There is a difference between physical and mental addiction.
As for dull of senses, What Pain killers are out there that do not dull the senses somewhat. But atleast with Marijuana I can function.

I feel for you. But the thing is, the whole War On(Some)Drugs (Users) is basically a money making thing for the prison-industrial complex, the fastest growing industry in the US at this time. You might want to take a look at a piece I wrote about a book titled Arrest-Proof Yourself at
libdrone.blogspot.com/2007/10/get-out-of-blog-with-your-hands-up.html
Your best chance at being able to use the medicine that helps you is to fly under the radar rather become known and associated with the issue by lobbying. Wish you the best.-
Thank you for the reply libdrone, I agree my best chance would be to fly under the radar. But the way I see it that would not help out others. You would be surprised to find out how many people "self" medicate with Marijuana but are afraid to have their name linked to the drug.
These poor people have to interact with Dealers and use their own money for it. This needs to be disscused so these people can access the medicine they need and have help paying for it though insurance.

they are afraid for a very good reason, drew. people get serious jail time for simple possession. even in states where local law is more lenient fed jump in and prosecute. look at what happened at the oakland buyers club.
If you feel the need to be a martyr on this, I admire your bravery if not your street smarts. But I hope you realize what you are opening yourself up to. Ever been arrested? I have.-
Thanks you for admiring my bravery but...
I can take any drug test right now and pass. I would not have it in my possesion unless given to me by my Doctor. I have not taken Marijuana Illegally, and won't.
I would love to see Marijuana Legalized, but I have seen the benefits of Medical Marijuana and know that it made the Quality of life a lot better for my friend who died of cancer. My friend with MS is a new person when he is on Marijuana. And in my case, When I have been places that it was legal for me, I could walk more than 15 minutes at a time.

Marijuana has been on this earth since prehistoric times. Mankind has taken the medicinal usage and turned it recreational. -
I know more about drugs and drug abuse than I ever wanted to. On of my sons is a recovering addict. I've seen this issue from virtually every side and I'm convinced that the war on drugs is more like the "quagmire" that was vietnam than this current war in Iraq, despite what some would say.
Prohibition did not work when we tried it with alcohol and it hasn't worked with recreational drugs. The government should decriminalize all drugs, regulate and tax them for recreational use and spend the tax money, 100%, on rehab for those who want to quit.
As for marijuana specifically, it has shown to be beneficial in a few medical situations. Alcohol has no medicinal benefits. Marijuana adversely affects the brain, lungs and skin for sure; alcohol adversely affects virtually every major organ in the body. (Kidney's being the exception.)
While marijuana is not "addictive" as heroin or cocaine or even nicotine and caffeine are, a person can become addicted to it if they are pre-disposed to addiction. In that way, it's more like alcohol.-
except that alcoholics are very often violent and belligerant and get into trouble and into the legal system on charges like assault, DUI, etc. whereas users of marijuana tend to have a much more peaceable experience using that drug (v. alcohol) and get swept into the legal system for no crime other than simple possession which can and often does carry far more serious punishments than DUI, assault, etc even though Those crimes are much more of a threat to public safety.
except for that bit I agree with you completely. Legalization would bring about a major new tax base that could easily fund treatment on demand plus lots of other needed things. But it would put the prison/industrial complex, the US's fastest growing industry out of business. and that industry is too connected politicaly to ever let that happen -
You're right. I didn't mean to imply that they are the same, but rather that neither are addictive to the average person. Alcohol use and abuse is very closely related to violence; marijuana not at all.
If anyone wants to read an excellent, impartial book on illegal drugs, find a copy of "The Consumers Union Report - Licit and Illicit Drugs" which comes from the same people who put out Consumer's Report magazine. It's out of print but it's worth the effort to find it.
Oh, wait! Gee, I love Google.
Seems it's online here:
www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm
Not sure if it's the whole book but it looks like a lot of it is there. Chapters 55 & 56 are very interesting regarding why pot is illegal.

Why would you want to legalise something that destroys part of the brain.
The beauty of marijuana ..hydroponicaly grown was expressed to me on the the 21 November 1999 when I stood next to my sons silver colored coffin just before his funeral. His name was Joshua Hogan born 1980 and died on the 17th of November 1999.
However, as a human being that cares for other human beings, I wish you a wonderous joyful and fulfilling life
Kind regards
Tony Hogan-
Tony,
I am sorry about your son. No parent should live though that. Parents should never out live their children, no matter how old they are. But at such a young age is horrible.
Unfortunatley, Marijuana is used to often by young kids. I have an 11 year old that has already told me that she has been approached about Marijuana. This should never happen.
Marijuana is to common and easy to get for children, especially teens. I have read about teen use with Marijuana and have heard a lot of teens talk about how it is easier to get marijuana than it is to get Alcohol and Cigarettes. There are 12 States now that have Medical Marijuana laws. Studies have shown a Decrease in Teen marijuana use. There is a Professor at the College here that has done a lot of studies on Teen Marijuana use and I have had the pleasure to talk to him about it. I would never want to see Marijuana use among Teens.

Thanks kindly for your response, no need to be sorry about my child. This is a complex issue at all levels. There are a lot of studies for and against. I live in an area where the usage of drugs is common, and a friend of mine was telling me the other day that 12 of his kids friends had suicided and in all cases they were drug related. As a musician I have grown up in an industry where people destroy themselves.
In a lab, with intelligent, balanced human beings maybe there can be good work done. But the problem that we have is that people think it's safe, it's not at all.
I wish you well
