For a gosh-darn second, forget about the presidential circus. What are you doing, if anything, to inform yourself about the candidates running in your district for local, state, or DC senate and house? What are you doing to make the community you live more in line with your idealogy? Do you know who is running for re-election in your State/City? Do you know where they stand on the issues that directly affect your life?

For example, in Minnesota this is a huge election year for our US Senator... incumbent Rep. Norm Coleman up against a number of democratic hopefuls, including Al Franken and Mike Cerisi, et. al... all wanting Paul Wellstone's (rip) former senate seat. This race outcome will probably affect me more directly than the presidential.

What candidates or issues are on the ballot in your state/city this year?

That's a darn good question. In DC the answer seems to be nada. This might have something to do with that whole taxation without representation thing we have to put up with.

I'm always informed. Then again not only do I run the polls but I'm also on town committees. Not much is going on here right now though, we've already had some local elections, and most, if not all of our state reps aren't running right now, unless I've missed something. Next year though....

We do seem to have a plethora of referendums this year.

Locally we recently had a nasty fight about whether to allow Casino's at Gettysburg. I know this seems contradictory since I have a horse racing blog, but I actually wrote a letter that several local politicians might've read, as they started throwing my closing sentence around quite a bit.

In my letter I stated "we have already wagered enough on this sacred field."

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about increasing job opportunities, but not there. Not on that field. The town can't handle the tourist traffic as it is.

It was a hugely divisive issue. Just about everyone had a sign saying either "yes to jobs!" or "no to the casino!" in their front yards.

The idea of a casino at Gettysburg is obscene.

Thanks for all your examples. I like to hear about people involved in and informed about their local and state referendums and politicians. I hope to hear more people chiming in.
