I am looking for inspiration - being a first time blogger, I assumed I wouldn't have a staggering amount of hits at first, I hope with time my blogs will grow and capture strong viewership/subscribers and of course ad hits.

I like to think of mine as a success story. I started my blog on December 20th. Here's a breakdown of my unique-visitors-per-day of the last week:

Dec. 23 - 74 unique visitors per day
    Dec. 24 - 93
    Dec. 25 - 168
    Dec. 26 - 162
    Dec. 27 - 140
    Dec. 28 - 232
    Dec. 29 - 303

As you can see, aside from a small dip on the 26th and 27th, my site has seen incredible growth in a small amount of time. I chalk a lot of this up to persistence. I post frequently, I comment on other blogs frequently. And that pays off: about 75% of the comments I've left on other blogs have earned me at least a small boost in traffic, and many of them have earned me comments as well.

Just about everything I've done in the last week has been towards investing in ways to improve my blog. Your blog will grow at the pace you set for it. If you spend all day working on it, every day, it will grow quickly. If you spend less time, it'll grow slower, but it will still grow. Don't give up, even when it seems like no one is listening.

Fantastic advice on all parts. Thank you for taking the time- everything you have mentioned makes sense. I've dedicated the time, and will continue to... but you said something that I haven't considered, which was spending time commenting on other blogs. Fantastic.

As an addendum to my advice about commenting on other blogs: don't drop your links wantonly. Most blogs allow commentators to fill out a URL section, so be sure to fill that all the time, but within the text of your comment, don't drop a link unless you can link to an article that has information relevant to the topic of the original post. Otherwise, you just look like you're spamming.

As Douggoff says, just keep with it. Building relationships here, and on other sites such as Stumbleupon, Twitter and Facebook has helped me a lot.

Also, I added the comment luv application to my wordpress website - now when visitors leave a comment, it displays their latest blog post.

I recently did a background piece on Benazir Bhutto which brought in about 600 visitors from search engine traffic over a 24 hour period, and they are still trickling in.
