The objective of this disccusion is for me to find what OS most of us use, and the reasons why?

Note: if you use two operating systems on your computer (partitions), name the two of them, and give the reasons for using them both!

Mac OS X as my default. I also have a Vista laptop for Windows specific software like Keyword Elite

Can you explain the reason you use Mac OS X as your default and not use any other OS?

I needed an OS that is rock solid and supports a good range of software and that has the kind of support that Apple offer. If something goes wrong I can take it into any Apple store on the planet and get it fixed. I can't do that with Windows.

Toyed with going Linux on a brand name laptop and before the Mac I actually ran Suse Linux but I got tired of constantly having to use the console to do anything and drive permissions were always an issue. A simply thing like ejecting a usb stick was a problem, but on the mac its easy

I guess u miss big achievement that Linux already has now. I have used openSUSE since 10.3 version and nothing to bother me, it's surf faster, more secure, and customizable also.
Since 2008 I'm upgraded my openSUSE to 11.0 version, with kernel upgraded into 2.6.27-7 stable version and its run perfectly in my acer 4530 laptop, and for your problem about plug and unplug removable media, did you aware that in Linux, your removable media icon will automatically show up in desktop just like your mac? (just dream it, to have this kind awesome feature on your windows)

I am running XP on all my computers at home, but I keep wanting to set up a server and run EVERYTHING on Linux. I have a buddy that did this in his home, and his network runs AWESOME.

The only reasons for me running Gnu/Linux, is mainly because it is open source, and that is ,free and developed by thousands of programmers each year, and unlike all OS available, you could choose from hundreds of Linux operating systems, like Ubuntu, Fedora, mandriva, SUSE and many others!

I've been a Mac user for many years mainly because it runs on a Unix core. I'm sure all the Linux guys understand.

mac using UNIX core just for a while ago, long before it they use their own architecture. IMHO they moved to UNIX core because they want to expanding their hardware support.

Well I am surprised you remember it, But I thought of making this discussion more clearer and specific, by just putting 3 choices for more preferred OS!
      glad you remembered!

    Mac OS X v10.4.11

Will be moving up to OS X v10.5.3 on a new machine.
    1. carlgalloway
Good choice going straight to 10.5.3

I upgraded to 10.5.1, then had all sort of problems until 10.5.2 came out, then had a different set of problems until 10.5.3 a few days ago.Thankfully this new release seems to have fixed all the problems

    I use FreeBSD 7.0

Posted previously in MAC or PC thread...

I've used Mac for 18 years now. I've also used Windows (95, 98, XP & Vista) on/off throughout those years. Several hard-core Windows users I know hate Vista and are considering other options for their next upgrade.

IMO: Vista is the best Microsoft OS yet, but that is more from a usability / interface-design standpoint. I purchased a Sony Viao with Vista pre-installed and I have no software to upgrade nor any peripherals to connect. Software upgrade issues and peripheral connection problems seem to be the main reason Vista is getting a bad rap. As well, it's bloated and built atop of older code which can make it a bit unstable.

Now, more than ever is a great time to consider Mac. You can always install XP or Vista if you feel you really need it.

No... I don't work for Apple. I just know how much easier it can be using a Mac. Also, I'm an interactive developer and RR is just a side project.

    Addition...

As for Linux... I installed Red Hat Linux on my Mac a few years back. It seemed to have a lot of potential, but wasn't enough to keep me interested. I was mainly interested in installing some server software for testing, but that's easy enough to do now directly on the Mac via the UNIX Apache server.

Apple Mac is like luxury car(Ferrari,Lambhorgini)!!
Microsoft is like Cheap car(Tata Nano)" If computers have no doors or fences, who needs Windows and Gates?"
But Linux is like raw material(iron, steel, alloys),U ve assemble ur system by yourself,
But a person who want to become a computer Geek should go for Linux operating system,,

I run Fedora Linux 95% of the time and XP when I have to. I use Linux because it's fast, stable, free, secure, and it stays out of my way. I run XP when I have to test a website layout or when using my scanner, since there's no Linux software available for it.

Fedora Core 9 because it's so pretty, plus it comes with all the dev tools out of the box.

Windows XP because I need to use Flash sometimes.

Fedora 9 Rocks with Compiz fusion!!!!

Windows Xp to play games which are unplayable using Wine.

    Linux for everything else.

I have run through a lot of distributions.. Debian, Red Hat, Fedora, OpenSuse. presently I use Ubuntu 8.04

I use Ubuntu because a)It is awesome , b)It is awesome and c) I have a local repository in my campus. so installation of any program is a breeze.

I use 8.04 Hardy because it is a long term support version and frankly I was dissatisfied with 8.10 Ibex.. which was very buggy.

I have two computers that I work from. My primary computer has Mac OS X. It is my preferred OS because it is intuitive and I don't have to worry as much about the same security issues as Windows. My other computer has Windows XP. The only time I use it is when I am using special programs that won't run on my mac. I am thinking about loading Linux on my Dell just to test it out. Eventually I will upgrade my PowerBook to a new MacBook because I will be able to have the best of both worlds on one computer.
