Main Stream Media Unfair?

Bob Beckel says the mainstream media is justified in their attacks on Palin's personal life because her pregnant daughter is proof she needs to be home taking care of her children.
Sort of like saying that the victim is repsonisble for the mugging attack or sexual assault. So you better not go jogging in the park before you go to the office.
Sounds familiar.
But Bob Beckel just warned all of us who dare to challenge the media. The media will have their revenge.
Yes, the media will eventaully get us because as Beckel says, everyone knows you better not attack anyone who buys ink by the barrel.
Sadly, history proves him right. They rally to each others side like a pack of wolves tearing the sheep apart and the courageous dog, who tries to intercede.
Oh well, I guess we better not run for the town council.
But hang in there Sarah. We believe in you.

Don't know who Bob Beckel is ... but unless Sarah lived in some bubble somewhere how the heck can she be surprised at this?
And I don't think it's the 'mainstream' media ... I mean it's the entertainment news, like National Enquirer that went after her, and all the blogs. CBS, NBC, ABC ... aren't they the mainstream? They just followed what was on the internet in most cases, and asking tough questions about her policy is not unfair. Also, now that she released the info to the public it's fair game.
Again, what was she expecting? And she sounds like she can handle it so let her. Besides, I don't remember to many Republicans complaining when Obama's former minister was on the airwaves non-stop. -
But hang in there Sarah. We believe in you.
If you want to convey your sentiments to Sarah then this is an odd place to do it. How about posting to the campaign headquarters website? Alternatively I suppose you could have used Discussion search in the sidebar, typed in "Palin" and posted into one of the existing Palin threads. Both of those seem to me to be more effective than posting yet another new thread to the forum as there are already so many of them. Here's the link to the others www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/search.php?q=Palin
BTW we do have a Political Forum and here's a thread you may be interested in posting to there www.blogcatalog.com/politics/discuss/entry/media-bias -
Since when was the news media supposed to be fair, fair to what? They are supposed to sell news and their job is to report on whatever will sell. When a person chooses to take on a high profile job they will come under high profile scrutiny. She isn't a fragile helpless woman, she can handle it! You don't want a vp who can't handle the scrutiny or our media, now would you?

Ducking what issue? Is anyone here actually surprised that the media went after the story?
If Palin is surprised, or hurt by it, she's thicker than I thought. At least going after something that is true and brought to the attention of the media by Palin and campaign is fairer than attacking a man for the race of his father whom he didn't even really know, and equating him to a terrorist, which is essentially libel.

It's been stated so many times.
Sarah Palin can educate and preach all she want, in the end it was the choice of a 17 year old that resulted in a pregnancy. The fact that Sarah is talking about love and support for her daughter when the child arrives is exactly in concert with what she believes. Family support, no abortions. The mother and father of the child are planning to get married. Sounds to me like we have a family making the best of an imperfect situation. (I refuse to call the birth of a child a bad thing)
Beckel is pissed because she dared to call the media on some of their BS and dared to say that she was coming to Washington to serve the people not to win the favor of the Media. And he went on the vengeance trip.
I think that the media will end up in a Damned if you do damned if you don't situation here. She is drawing huge attention, those that try to ignore that will just lose readers to the ones that are covering her.
Those that attack her will lose out the Rep crowd and those that don't will lose the Dem crowd. (in large terms)
This is a market economy, people spend their money and time where they get what they want. -
Personally I feel that it is wrong to attack Bristol. She is not responsible for her mothers political positions and she is going to have a difficult enough time being a single mother. TO me the hypocrisy comes from the fact that we extend her that courtesy and so many other single mothers are slut shamed.
-
Maybe facing the reality will strengthen all of them. Bristol can mature and grow in understanding, By coming with her mother, Bristol is standing tall and supporting her mother. Maybe her character, her faith, her concept of forgiveness is enabling her to hold her head high. She is being humiated, yes, but she is ithstanding it and needs our support, not vituperation. Shame on you people, main stream media, for your meaness.
Nope. I don't see so many negatives as you people out there. I see the harshness of life being played out at the feet of a real family. And they are standing tall. Not easy, with all the hate.
Do you know the NY Times had three articles of lies on its front page last Wednesday about the Palins and then had to retract all three.
Last time I looked, the NY Times was mainstream media. The articles were retracted so fast that Big Bill didn't even have a chance to call them a pinhead.
And last time I looked, the bloggers were the ones spewing the insinuations and accusations about Obama's faith. Are bloggers the mainstream media?

Why don't they talk about Palin on the issues. Abstinence only is what is what she wants in the classroom for example. We need to here where she really stands on things. If you are a conservative christian you will like it. But others won't.
1) The Iraq War is God's Plan.
2) Abortion is only right if it threatens the mothers life (not rape or incest).
3) Censorship of books is good. Firing of librarian.
4) Biblical Creationism is what should be taught in the classroom.
5) Why did you support Alaskan secession from the union?
6) Why is abstinence only the best choice for sex education?
7) What is your position on guns?
8) What is the real story about the bridge to nowhere?
Lets have some real answers. Most of what is being said right now is not very believable on either Palin's or the medias part. I want to see some cool dissection.-
THANK YOU! ABOUT TIME SOMEBODY MENTIONED THESE THINGS BESIDES ME
The fact that this woman was picked as VP candidate is an insult to everyone.
Here's what I think of her

Not ducking the issue at all, the media goes after stories that will sell and what the public clamors for, fair or not. When someone is up for a high profile job it is not a surprise that every aspect of their life, their abilities, influences will be scrutinized. If a candidate can't handle the press, even an unfair one, they how can they handle being a vp and dealing with very unfair world leaders.
-
Yes, the mainstream media is extremely unfair in the way that it's let McCain and Palin slide by with the most outrageous lies while relentlessly attacking Obama for everything they can find.
The "liberal media" is a myth created by the conservative corporate media.-
I get AP headlines on my yahoo home page, which is generally the first thing I see when I turn on my computer in the morning. I learned about Obama's VP choice from a headline that said something like "Biden choice shows Obama's weakenesses" and about McCain's from one that said she was a maverick just like him. Typical of the media's true stripes.

I don't know if it is the media or the American public in general. After all, the papers print what we will pay to read and we seem to like train wrecks and tragedy more than good news and acts of kindness. The media is like any other business. They play to their market and that, dear friends, is us. And before someone jumps down my throat, I'm not pointing fingers at any one group or person because some of "us" are disgusted by what we see in the media, left or right. Unfortunately, I just happen to think the mudslinging-loving "us" outnumbers the other "us."

This is the secret. All good novels are based on problems. If there isn't a problem to solve most of the time people won't read it. This goes for newspapers, novels, and most writing.

Every political figure has thicker skin than the normal non-political figure.
They are celebrities just like the ones on the big screen. More people who are not attacked probably take the attacks harder. It's all one gigantic game nintendo has not put on the shelf yet.
If you haven't seen this by Jon Stewart check it out for more eye opening behind the curtain looks at the political Parties----hmm parties? Yep One Big Party and all are invited.

First FOX isn't major media to me they are partisan media,
even Murdock admitted that.
Beckel is a pundit not a real journalist, very few of those yammering on any outlet are real journalist. They give people with vague credential a spotlight and they talk us to death. it's his opinion not news. Lots of people feel that way. I think FOX has been going pretty hard calling everyone out for attacking her, though it's pretty funny when you look at how they attacked Hilary the same way or worse.
She should be questioned on her policy of abstinence, right to choose and abortion in light of the fact that it didn't work for her family the situation itself may have to be part of the discussion.
Journalist report stories the people giving opinions are pundits. There are some excellent journalist out there, conservative and liberal if you need to label them. You aren't going to find them watching television. -
NEWSFLASH: The media scrutinizes every candidate, only they've had years to do McCain and Biden, and a pretty long time to cover Obama too. They've had less than a week on McCain. It would be utterly irresponsible of the media not to scrutinize Palin very carefully. That means they're going to dig up things that she did and said that do not match the official GOP McCain-Palin narrative. So what did Palin do? She attacked the media in her speech. What has she not done yet? Made herself available for interviews by this media. No surprises here.
-
@Mark
I hard the party isn't letting her do interviews. That in itself is a pretty sure sign they haven't prepped her well enough. I am sure she learns fast, but if put in front of investigative journalist now she would falter badly, as she did in the Time interview. Give her a couple weeks though and she will have the drill down pat. -
Only if the journalists let her get away with it. I'm hoping Gwen Ifel doesn't come debate time.
By the way, here's an article in today's Politico.com about Palin not meeting the press: www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13208.html
-
It's actually brilliant marketing.
The interest and curiosity is huge around her right now. And by only letting the press have "tidbits" its like a viral campaign.
Since no one has a full interview.. All we hear is Palin alegedly this, Palin might have that. And pretty soon, its a full on viral campaign.
in fact, the short time available to journalists is lending itself well to them grasping at straws. reporting things that aren't true. LIke the AIP membership. So the more misstakes they make, the worse they come out looking, and the better she looks.
This is actually a doctoral lesson in Media Management and Spin Doctoring.-
I should think the jury is still out on the AIP. Pretty strange that she would record a welcome address for such a group, though. marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/the_alaska_independence_party...
That page included 2 videos of praise for her membership in the AIP but they got yanked from YouTube—dunno by who or why.

By the way, if you look at what has already been turned up on her (markstoneman.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/the-case-against-sarah-palin/), there's every reason for the press to probe further. Nothing necessarily illegal so far, but her claims about her record do not all match fact, and her extremist positions need to be made known to people who think they're relevant. (These are the same positions that make her attractive to that "base" we saw in St Paul.) Letting the campaign get away with casting her as Mrs. Everywoman won't cut it. The record must match the rhetoric. If it doesn't, the press is duty bound to point that out. That's part of how a democracy with a free press works.

Palin is the one who told Clinton to "stop whining" about what she perceived as unfair media coverage. I'd give you the youtube link ... but miraculously it's been removed. Now who's whining?
-
Oh, Jon Stewart caught that clip, and others - and aired them on the daily show
i think he gets away with a lot more stuff than the MSM does because he's slotted as comedy, but honestly, sometimes he's more astute that the journalists are!
www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=184086 -
@ruth - are you kidding me? LOL You're the one who started this thread complaining about how the media is treating Palin. I'm just saying that Palin didn't have a problem when the media focus was on Clinton ... or Obama. Either did the Republicans.
I think the media is pretty soft on all of them ... they all need to be looked at very closely, regardless of which party they're with. -
you can go to hulu.com and watch all the John Stewart stuff.

-
Fox News has a expose coming on called Sarah Palin "A American Woman" that should be fair and balanced huh?
-
A lot of people think that the press is a two edged sword. Without the press, we are at the mercy of those in power.
But the gossip factor, the rationalization of their right to probe and print regardless of the accuracy of their articles, has always made decent and fair minded people angry.
The Warden by Trollope, written if I remember correctly, in 1890's is a powerful and poignant example of the harm done under the guise of "probing".
Are there decent fair minded journalists and editors?. Sure but as someone said, that's not what sells papers. They exploit what they can to make names for themselves and sell papers. Period. End of Story. The annual Boy Scout Picnic does not make the front page, nor does it make that reporter famous.
As Beckel says, it's not a wise idea to upset the people who buy ink by the barrel. -
Okay all you liberal scumbags, let's give Republicans a chance to speak for themselves. And if you don't like it, shut up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMiUAcEJY98
(this might be a repeat of what Anok posted, which I couldn't see)
