Make History on Wednesday

Topics: blogging for charity, blogging for good, organ donation
Everyone at BlogCatalog hopes you will join us and blog this Wednesday in the first world wide blogger social campaign to raise awareness about organ donation and the issues surrounding organ donation.
To help make it easier, the BlogCatalog team has searched come up with some ideas.
Here are a few that stood out. Use them or find something similar for inspiration.
Stop The Black Market!
Slate Magazine took a hard look at a growing problem around the world. Organ donation is so great, some poor people are being convinced to sell their organs on the black market. In Pakistan, 40 percent of the people in some villages are turning up with only one kidney. There is only one way to stop it and that is encouraging more people to become donors. See the article! slate.com/id/2164177/
Success Story! Alex Pratt of Los Angeles suffered from kidney disease for over 20 years. It was a huge burden on his wife and two children until he received his first transplant in 1993. Unfortunately, it only lasted 9 years, so he had to wait another four years for a second transplant. He would have never gotten a second chance if not for www.MatchingDonors.com and a paired donation program at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Donors Needed! In Australia, more than 1,700 people are waiting for organ transplants. In Latin America, more than 50,000. In Europe and the United States, more than 95,000. In China, more than 2 million. In Africa, there isnt enough organization to really know. Without an organ transplant, these people will die. There are many statistics and links to find a good story at Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organ_donation
Campaign Promotion! You can blog about BlogCatalog's effort to do good and how hundreds of bloggers are coming together on BlogCatalog to do good. If this campaign is successful, then we will continue to organize and inspire BlogCatalog Community Awareness Campaigns every other month.
It is a great opportunity to show that bloggers can come together to do good in the world, raising awareness and asking tough questions about causes and issues that do not always get the attention they deserve.
Here's what the National Business Community Blog ran about us last time.
nbcb.blogspot.com/2007/05/blogcatalog-employs-social-media-for.html
We really hope you will join BlogCatalog and hundreds of bloggers around the world on Wednesday July 18th and blog to educate the world about organ donation.

In May, BlogCatalog helped more than 1,000 students get the school books, supplies, and resources they needed for their classrooms. Amazing!
Since then, the BlogCatalog team has been busy looking for a way to pull the community together again to launch an awareness campaign that will be heard around the world. It's the BlogCatalog Community Organ Donor Awareness Campaign.
Why organ donation? In Australia, more than 1,700 people are waiting for organ transplants. In Latin America, more than 50,000. In Europe and the United States, more than 170,000. In China, more than 2 million. In Africa, there isnt enough organization to really know. Without an organ transplant, these people will die.
Organ donation is a gift of life. On July 18, let's all come together again and raise awareness about organ donation and the good it can do. If everyone blogs about organ donation, no matter what country you live in, we can save lives! It's easy and we can also prove that bloggers can do good at the same time!
If you live in the United States, all you have to do is link to www.OrganDonor.gov
www.organdonor.gov/donor/index.htm
UNOS www.unos.org/ or
matchingdonors.com
If your country has an online organ donation site, please add it to this bulletin so BlogCatalog members in your country can promote it too or visit the British Organ Donor Society for known worldwide links body.orpheusweb.co.uk/lnks.html
On Wednesday, July 18, write a blog post asking all your readers to sign up as organ donors. Your blog post should:
Have the title : BlogCatalog Community Organ Donation Awareness Campaign (or some variation)
Explain the importance of organ donation and how it is a gift of life. Or blog about any other issue relating to organ donation.
Link to one (or all three) of the sites above or the most suitable site for your country.
If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to webmaster@blogcatalog.com.
Please, don't forget to tell your friends to blog about this too. Together, we can raise awareness about organ donation!-
What a great idea - I will definitely blog about this on Wednesday, and encourage all WoW members to get involved. But first stop: to get a donation card myself. It's been something I've meant to do for a long time - now your initiative has given me the spur to do it - today! Can't very well go blogging about something I haven't done myself.
Ours is a brand new blog and we just signed on with Blog Catalogue at the weekend - gaining so much already.
thanks for all

Fabulous Post...and a very good cause. My daughter was born with Turner's Syndrome (www.turner-syndrome-us.org/) and she may very well need a transplant one day. These women many times wind up needing kidneys. So I will be very proud to be a part of this effort. And If I or her sister are not matches....this could very well help save her life. I hope everyone joins in on this effort. And I am not trying to spam either...but, if you would just take a peek at the Turner's Syndrome site you might be surprised to learn about a genetic disorder which gets very little attention....they struggle every year to raise funds. I think this is a wonderful think that BC does. Thank you.

Thanks for the opportunity to help spread the word! I received the information about this campaign just two hours after a friend of the family passed away from kidney failure. He has been on the transplant list for more than 5 years. My organ donor awareness post is up and will be included in the newsletter being sent out today. - thecheapgourmet.typepad.com/the_cheap_gourmet/2007/07/blogcatalog-com.html

When I was a teen I was against Organ donation. It is funny how you grow up and a tragedy can you change your outlook. -

I blog for eseesky.com several times a week.

This is a topic I haven't thought about much. I knew there were people selling their organs, but not on this scale. I watched the videos and it was just amazing how someone can give up a part of themselves knowing they could be risking their own lives later down the line. This was very touching. I could do this for a family member, but a complete and total stranger?
I do thank the Blood Donors out there who stay healthy and are regular donors. Because I may need another soon. Chronic Anemia makes me a cranky Blogger! -
We can all do with a little more wisdom, loving kindness and compassion..

I will blog this topic too. In Malaysia for those who want to donate organ here is the site: www.rayma.com.my/giftoflife/index.html
A great idea to create awareness. -
Actually, the only way to stop poor people from selling their organs out of desperation is to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable living. However, organ donation is a good cause, with emphasis on "donation".
I'll be pleased to write about the compassion of donating your organs, but I also, want to speak out for the victims of organ harvesting in China.
Here's a series of articles about it:

Great post, I plugged BlogCatalog's effort a couple days ago and look forward to the big push tomorrow. If you're an Illinois resident, I strongly encourage you to check out our Donate Life Illinois campaign website (www.IAmAreYou.org) and blog (iam-areyou.blogspot.com/) as we continue the push toward registering 3.5 million Illinois residents in the state's new organ/tissue donor registry.
Thanks,
Scott -
There is so much wrong with this article and not a single person has seen the flaws in the organization or attempts to get people do what this article WILL NOT accomplish.
Re-READ the article and think it through.
This will NOT STOP THE BLACK MARKET; people will always try to prevent death even knowing it’s inevitable. This will not even place a dent in the black market; people who do not want to wait on a donors list utilize the black market. The black market is for individuals who do not believe that laws apply to them.
Saturating the Internet with articles concerning donating organs will not change someone mind about organ donation or using the black market. The only thing all these articles will accomplish is traffic ratings and successful speed linking. I am all for increasing traffic but I will not disguise it as a good cause.
Shame on you! -
I will Post about this on my Blog about Hepatitis C. ourhepchat.blogspot.com

It's already Wednesday where I'm from and I actually just made a post about this blog-worthy campaign.

I tried to make some research, and I'v got some info - my country is last in Europe in number of transplantations per year, and even wikipedia article in Serbian is shorter then most of the definitions would be. Only thing you can find on the net regarding this are ads for selling kidneys... Damn it...

(Its in Serbian) -
I have done mine!!
Under the Singapore HUMAN ORGAN TRANSPLANT ACT (CHAPTER 131A), anyone who has died in the hospital may have their organs removed from their body for the purpose of the transplantation of the organ to the body of a living person. This is a "compulsory" law and is different from an opt-in (self-consent) method in the west.
Titled : Organ donation and Buddhism.

When I was registered as an organ donor, someone was trying to murder me. I would not recommend signing up to be an organ donor, if you are poor. There are many wealthy people in the world who will pay to have innocent people killed for the use of their organs on their precious loved ones. You can censor this post, but it is the truth!

just posted now. the thing I feel that would make most difference is if we put pressure on governments to go for an opt-out system, as in many countries in Europe, rather than the opt in system that prevails in US, UK, Ireland and Australia, among others. Read more here:

Organ Donation is something I have been interested in for years. We had an article on organ donation as early as 1999 on the Journey of Hearts site.
For today's challenge I've added information on becoming an organ donor and also looking at how you can "Give the Gift of Life through Organ Donation - A Way to Creatively Cope with Grief

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile cause. -
