Making stuff

In my spare time I like making different kinds of stuff. Jewelry is fun, I made the engagement rings for me and my fiancee out of titanium and gold. I also build stuff out of wood and metal, sew stuff, whatever happens to seem interesting to build and learn about. Right now I'm working on a new longboard.

Anyone else like making stuff? What kind of stuff do you make? Do you make it for fun, or do you sell the things you make?

wow, a man of many talents I just make mutant bacteria that I can't sell
    1. Rainhat
      Mutant bacteria? o.O
I'm guessing that is actually nowhere near as cool as it sounds? It puts an image in my head of a slimy blob rising from a petrie dish, growing to monstrous proportions, devouring people and taking over the world! Who wouldn't want to buy one of those?
    2. Deray28
jajajaja I wish! You are right, it sounds more exciting than it actually is. I'm a bacteriologist so bugs are my life. I love to see them under a microscope, especially electron microscopes were I feel like I can touch the bug, jajajaja.

I do. I make these reeths for new babies. I make them out of diapers and pastel tissue paper, then glue all the little cute stuff to it. Like shoes, rattles, baby lotions, little babythings. Then when you go to have the baby you hang it on the hospital door. I always get tons of compliments on them.

I cook as an art in my spare time. I am not artistic enough to sew, or draw, or anything like that. My home Ec teacher gave up on my sewing so that tells you how bad it was. I also take photos of diffrent things.

I make tons of stuff From needed items (whatever I happen to need at the mo') to crafty stuff to industrial stuff - if it can be made, I can probably figure out how to make it.

I also make herbal remedies for what ails you, things like hair and clothing dye from all natural sources, furniture, artwork, decorative items and whatever else. I can sew, cook, do carpentry, I'm learning how to weld - I would love to learn how to spin and weave, though.
    1. Rainhat
Cool! Welding is a lot of fun, though I'm far from good at it. I learned by making a tiny barbeque out of some scrap metal plates that I found. It was about a foot high and big enough for about four hot dogs.
    2. Anok
      I love it!!
    3. HollytheHousewife
Anok I told you bout the MG I redid with my poppy didn't I. He was a fabricator and he taught me how to weld when we were redoing that car. I also then learned how to listen to people who know what they're doing. I ended up burning my eyes bc I couldn't see out of the mask. Had to sleep with potato peelings for 3 days, haha

anok u and I are more alike than you know. I make stuff out of nothing all the time.... I love to learn new stuff to. Nothing stops me from doing stuff. My hubby can't even hook up the vcr,so I have had to get good at doing stuff on my own.

Even when our plumbing collapsed in our front yard when we first moved in,my brother and me fixed it ourselves. It would've been 15,000 had we hired somebody.

I learned how to do a rough end, with my bro. It was the funniest thing ever,I wish I woulda taken pics of me out there in a 7 foot trench in my yard covered head to to in mud,and GOD ONLY KNOWS what else...but I GOTT-HER-DUN

There are a few things I don't mess with - namely electricity in high voltages, and gas furnaces. I don't wanna get blowed up.
    2. HollytheHousewife
yea,I'm gonna put that one on my list to. NO GAS FURNACES for HTHW,unless you're ready for armegedon!

I'm not good at experimenting. Or maybe I'm just lazy to do things. I made a cross stitch but it took years to finish a cushion so I never tried to do another one.

    Uhmmmm I'm tired...

But I do lots of stuff to keep my creativity going.

Right now I've invested in a jewelry business and all of the things that go with it - ALL THE DAMN BEADS....

And well - I'm still counting, sifting, sorting and organizing them - I have a whole store of beads in my living room - stacked.

    SIgh...

When I get into something I do it ALL the way - LOL!

Anyhow - that's kinda what I do.., And art work too - as you saw.

I think it's way cool that you do jewelry tho - wanna show us some?
  8. chrissymarie321
I would love to be able to make things from wood. A friend of mine is a wood turner and recently made a teddys bear bunk bed It is beautiful
I do make beaded jewelry sometimes but mainly I do art, mainly of animals.
As wagerwitch says, I think you should post some up
  9. Rainhat
Hehe alrighty, lemme figure out some way of putting up a picture of some of it...
  10. Rainhat
    Hmm... not working...

    1. Rainhat
I can't seem to get the link to the picture to work, no clue why. Anyways, there are three pictures up on my "Life from my point of view" blog if you're curious.
  11. ThriftShopRomantic
Yup-- I do all sorts of projects. Recently I've been woodburning and painting signs for nurseries-- two folks I know have new babies now.

But I've done refinishing and decorative painting on a lot of my furniture. And I've done actual art painting-- taken a couple of classes at the local museum (I'm still not great at it, but I like it.)

I draw, and actually illustrate my humor blog with little cartoons.

I've made jewelry. And done decoupage.

I love having craft projects to work on.

    wow making stuff sounds cool.

I love making scrapbooks !! That is my favorite thing to do
  14. TJlubrano
I love to draw/paint. I usually turn them into cards to give away.
I've made bracelets and I could knit when I was younger...not sure if I still can do that though.
    1. Rainhat
Sounds like a good idea, cards with a personal touch!
We had to learn how to knit in school, so I made a couple of hats. I always wanted to learn how to knit socks, my grandmother used to spit them out like a machine, but I didn't quite have the patience to learn.
    2. TJlubrano
Aah cool! We could choose an extra course and I choose knitting. But I only knitted a few scarfs and I made a doll ^_^.

I'm currently learning how to make my own jewelry. One day I hope to be good enough so that I can sell it!
  16. ekim941
I make Kitchens and bathrooms for a living. As a hobby I have made a boat, jewelry, wood crafts, computer programs and anything else I can think of.

For me it is more about learning than creating.
    1. HollytheHousewife
I know,I love to learn new things, and how things fit together and make it into something that actually works.
I made a jacobs latter one year for a science project and won for the whole entire state! I did have my stepdad "electricians" help on that one.
    2. Rainhat
I agree, a big part of the fun in making different things is in learning how to make them.
  17. Bricore
    well...

I love to spin yarn and knit it into something. I don't know how to post the little mini movie I made of the stuff I loom knitted but if you want to go to my blog, go almost to the bottom of my blog and you'll see it.

I also own an embrodiery machine. Which I like to use as much as I can (it's in the shop right now because I messed up the timing on it.)

Another thing I love to make is soap. I need to make some CP soap this weekend if time allows.

I love to create stuff from junk. I so enjoy taking plastic bags, old t-shirts, old jeans, vcr tape, cassette tape and upcycle them into cool new items. My upcycled items vary from tote bags, purses, baby bibs, potholders, trivets, clutches, doll clothes, pot scrubbers, and rugs. Anyway I truly love to make stuff!
    1. HollytheHousewife
I'm the same way!!! After my girls b-day party last year,I had about 30 of those clear plastic cups leftover. So I pulled out my hot glue gun and poked holes in the bottom, and threaded a strand of xmas lights in them, and glued the cups together and I made it into a sphere, now I take it with us when we go camping....its like a disco ball
  19. Anniepooh
Stuff - well, I can rig anything - does that count? AND, I don't use duct tape for all of it

I used to sew clothing by hand for my older girls, paint, craft small boxes for jewelry, make papier mache stuff, homemade lip glosses and I want to make soap - but not until the younger kids are older and duct taped to a wall so they don't get hurt.

  21. crazyTsu
    I make excuses
  22. Funkkeejooce
    Those rings are abolutely gorgeous.

I don't really make stuffs to sell. I make my own Cards (birthdays/Christmas) for friends. (If that counts)
  23. RecycleCindy
Rainhat -- Your jewelry "stuff" is fantastic. You are very talented and should consider putting some of your creations up for sale on your blog.
    1. Rainhat
Hmm... A blog for selling these things, that's not a bad idea. I could sell custom made jewelry, with the size and materials people request. Hmmm...
  24. jafabrit
I will use anything and everything to make stuff, some for fun, for street art (knit graffiti, recycled painted crushed cans, barbie dolls, vinyl records, repurposed items) Right now my friend and I are covering a resuscitation doll I picked up at a garage sale and we are covering him head to toe with felt mosaic pieces. He is called mr.plato and will go in a show and then live in different spots around town. Other work is embroidery art, painting (those usually go into the gallery), reverse painting, oh gosh the list goes on lol!
It is just in my bones to create, create and create.
    1. wagerwitch
Jaf - you have any of your creative stuff up to show?

OOoh I just went to your blog - you have some really off the wall - and totally cool things there!
    2. jafabrit
LOL! I have my portfolio on the side, but just peeking at my blog can give a wee tasty morsel of my creative madness and joy. Thanks for checking out my blog wagerwitch.
  25. HollytheHousewife
    Ooooooo,rainhat do u do earings??!!!
    1. Rainhat
      Yup, I do.
  26. ezhuthukari

  27. tonybeach
    Cool work....
  28. HollytheHousewife
Oh I made me a lid "tops to pots and pans" holder.
I made a wooden box then I put 2 seperaters in it and viola...
U have urself a lid holder..I also save all my country croc bowls I use them for leftovers....those are my tupperware collection. I put all those lids in my lid holder too.
  29. HollytheHousewife
Oh yea I forgot about the bag holder. I save my grocery bags for all kinds of stuff, but couldn't find a neat place to keep them so I got a milk jug and cut a hole in the side and I put them in there.a lot neater, doesn't take up all the cabinet space
