In the past three weeks, I have been working on my experiment to manipulate Alexa traffic ranking. Now I am done with it. I will continue the strategies, but I won't promote it.
When I restart my blog on June 1st, my Alexa traffic ranking was 5.8 million. As of June 20th, my ranking is 580K. It jumps 10x. Does it work? Use your own judgment. After all, it's about manipulation.

You have not got to the point where you need to prove your high Alexa traffic ranking. If you ask most of those blogger who have a lot of text link based advertisement, they will tell you that you need better Alexa traffic ranking.
However, that high ranking doesn't mean you will be success. It's just one of the facts.

It's all about monetization. If the paid sponsor services didn't use Alexa as one of their measurements, Alexa wouldn't even be a player.

RTCunningham made good point. It's all about money.
Alexa is part of Amazon and AdBrite is part of Alexa. So they are all the same . Without Alexa, AdBrite won't know how to set the price for each sites.
Without Alexa, Amazon don't know who will their potential top seller. It's all about the evil business plan... which makes $$$.
