Maya calendar-2012 what does this really mean?

The Maya's and another religion have calendars that stop at 2012 in the winter solitice what is your view on it?.

I've been under the assumption that 2012 is simply when the calendar ends. After that, it starts over again. There isn't any apocalypse implied.

Gasp. A culture that didn't make it past the 9th century decided to stop counting after they had charted out dates 1800 years in the future. Quite obviously, this makes them the supreme arbiters of the world, resulting in a globe-spanning apocalypse once their calendar runs out. We're doomed.
...wait...my Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit Calendar runs out on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Egads. I'd better stock up on bagels. It just might be the end of the world.
