My blog onecoolsite contains Tips and Tutorials on How to Become a Better Blogger, How to Build a Better Blog and where to find free Blogging Tools and Resources.
I have been publishing a series of articles on blog strategies for obtaining backlinks, and intend to continue doing so, and as I'm writing I have been considering how hard it is to secure them.
Last year I scorned "memes" as tacku ways of getting backlinks but lately I have been considering the beating many bloggers have taken in Google PageRank updates. Consequently, I have changed my POV on memes.
- "A backlink is defined as a link from one website pointing back to your site , and what every blog needs is one-way non-reciprocal backlinks. A blog meme is a viral game where you generate links and relationships through asking other bloggers to participate. Blog memes are legitimate means of securing backlinks."
My post simply lays out the mechanics or "how - to" for creating a meme.
If you care to read it, then here's the link

- Discussion questions:
(1) Do you participate in blog memes?
(2) Have you ever initiated a blog meme? If so how many backlinks did you secure?
(3) What's you POV on using memes to get backlinks? Are you for them, or against them, or undecided?

Any time.
Now, to answer your questions:
1 & 2: No.
3: I'm not sure. I never used any memes so maybe I'm not quite getting how it works. Using the 3 friends example in your post, would that make all the links it secures reciprocal links, since you would have to link to the people first and then get them to come claim the prize and link back?-
I'm wondering about that too and was hoping someone would bring that aspect up and clarify. At present this is my understanding. The initiator gets a ton of backlinks because all participants tagged link back to the person who started the meme, and everyone else who participates gets some amount of link love too. You link to the next bloggers in the chain ”tag” them, and they link back when they complete what they have to do to participate.

Wouldn't the link ratio stay more or less at 1:1 this way then? For every link back, you'd have to link to the person linking back first?
If I understand this correctly, it seems like a lot of work for something that probably gets more publicity for the people you tag than for yourself, and what basically ends up looking like a link exchange masked as a game anyway.

1&2 - NO
From what I understand, it works similar to a pyramid scheme. If I started the meme, then anyone I got plus whoever they got link to me. example - I get 5, they get 5 each then I would have reciprocal links with the first 5, but not the second tier 25. All very confusing and unclear nonetheless. I have seen them, not knowing what they were, and ignored them. I would ask the user from india that commented on your blog to further explain his experience for our universal benefit!
Now that i know what they are, if I thought it would drive beneficial traffic I would definitely use them!! I am near impossible to find on Google as it is!!
My blog is also retail based, and I have a large readership in India...forward me that guy on your blog!!

Ah ok, now I get it. That makes more sense...
I guess it might work if it's done in a clever way. But I think if I made up a "Rainhat Award of Blog Excellence" and informed random music blog owners that they "won" it and then asked them to link back to me and continue the chain, chances are they would just go "Who are you?" and ignore it.
But I'm going to keep it at the back of my mind. If I come up with a clever way of using it, I wouldn't be opposed to trying it just to see if it works. -
This gives a clear breakdown

Yes,I did read the wikipedia entry and many other articles as well. What I'm looking for in this thread is feedback from BC members.

1&2 no
I get most of my link backs from giving away free templates.
I do link swapping on my site as well, but no link farmers. -
1. No, not now. But I did when I was a newbie. They were good for days when I was being a lazy writer. Only later did I realize that they were a backlink tool. Now, I acknowledge and thank the person who gave them to me, but I don't participate.
2. I've never initiated one, no.
3. I think using memes to get backlinks is easy, and can be made to be clever or useful. But most often, the originators are more concerned with the first than the latter two. IMHO you might get page rank help from a meme, but I doubt you'll get lasting traffic of any kind. -
