I recently read that Coca Cola bottled in Mexico tastes better than American Coke, because the former is made with refined sugar and not high fructose syrup, like the latter. So when good Mexican Coke in a green glass bottle appeared at my local grocery store, I just had to try it.

I have to say, Mexican Coca Cola lived up to the hype. This has also been my experience in Europe, where real sugar and different carbonation levels make for a better tasting soft drink.

So what are your favorite soft drinks? And do you think real sugar makes a difference in how something tastes?

      Yipes! Really? When?
    2. gtally
Grumble. I hate Pepsi. Can you suggest any cola alternatives?
    3. Epicharis
      water?

why not go for an own-brand cola? they taste the same to me...but then, I don't really drink that kind of thing.
    4. gtally
I like Blue Sky root beer. And Izze Cola made here in Colorado is pretty good. But I have not yet tried any alternative cola products. Hope I can find one that tastes like Mexican or European Coke.
    5. Epicharis
I'm sure you could achieve that taste by putting lots of sugar into some pond water and then using a soda stream?
    6. gtally
Problem with pond water is I'm not crazy about algae-flavored soft drinks. And natural soda streams require a bit of effort to locate and then purify.

I adore Izze soft drinks. Izze, Hansen, Orangina, Aranciata Pellegrino.

Also, for a limited time, Pepsi is test marketing its European version in the US. They're calling it Pepsi throwback.

I never drink Pepsi, so I couldn't discern a difference.
    1. gtally
      I don't drink a lot of Hansen. Didn't they sing "MmmBop!" ?

But I agree, the rest of your choices are really delicious. I think lower carbonation levels are a key factor to how a soft drink tastes. Lower carbonation makes for a better flavor because the bubbles don't overpower the flavors.
    2. Stillthinking
They sell it at Trader Joes. It's good.

I really love micro brewed Ginger Ales. I like the super dry, super spicy ones.
    3. gtally
Yeah. Micro-brewed ginger ale that almost burns your mouth. Love it! Combined with spicy foods like Mexican, "hot" ginger ale can be a borderline pleasure-pain experience.

I also like small batch micro-brewed root and ginger beers. We've got some really good ones in Colorado, like Hops and Tommyknockers
    4. Stillthinking
I have never had a microbrewed root beer. I bet they're awesome. I want some root beer now.

Have you ever tried making it at home? I have been told it's pretty simple.
    5. gtally
I once whipped up a batch of a vintage Shaker drink called birch water. It was like a non carbonated version of root beer. Turned out pretty good.

    Thought Coke was from Columbia?
    1. gtally
Aardvark! Good to see you. Heh. Yeah, I was waiting for that inevitable punchline.

Got any favorite soft drinks from Yorkshire to share?
    2. MissSuzie
@anin: At least the good kind is.
    3. aningeniousname
I'm not really one for soft drinks or fast food but in the north of England we drink a soft drink from Manchester called Vimto, which is a kind of fruity coke which can be still or sparkling and if vodka is added it's called a cheeky Vimto.
    4. gtally
Sounds pretty good. I agree, soft drinks should be consumed sparingly. I'm a snob about it too. I think a good soft drink deserves the same respect and consideration as a good beer or wine.
  3. MissSuzie
    I'm not a big soda drinker so I wouldn't have a clue.
  4. busylizzy
I've known this fact since I was a little girl (born 1960). In So California we could get both bottled from Mexico and cans from the USA.
    1. gtally
I only learned about it recently. But honestly I could taste the difference.
  5. LolitaV
bolthouse farm juices. the yuckiest looking one is their best.
    1. gtally
      Where is bolthouse made?
  6. dbowles1017
I usually can't taste the coke over the alcohol, so I'll take your word for it.
    1. gtally
What kind of alcohol is your favorite with a cola mixer -- whiskey or rum? Personally, my money is on the rum.
    2. dbowles1017
I do prefer rum over whiskey for mixing. Whiskey for shots though.
  7. kat822
it does taste better, I noticed that on my trips to Mexico
    1. gtally
Yeah, there is no decent substitute for real sugar in a soft drink.
  8. drjay1966
That it is...and I've recently found a couple of local places where I can get it....
    1. gtally
Health food stores or Mexican grocery stores? I'm really lucky in that I can get them at my regular old grocery store, no special trips required.

I like a good root beer. When we get to gether with our freinds sents none of us drink they make home made root beer and have it put in to kegs. Its very good. There is a drink I do like too that they do not sale every where so when I am here in CA I get what I can of it and its called cactus cooler. And yes the cola with suger dose tase better I believe too.
    1. gtally
Here's a fellow blogger who rates soft drinks and has written something about cactus cooler:

I will ask some of my Mexican friends to bring me some Mexican coke...I'm curious if its really better.
    1. AngieA
Oh you will notice the difference. I use to bring back a case of it whenever I cross the border.
    2. gtally
Good stuff, isn't it, AngieA? Ever had a Dublin Dr. Pepper?
    3. Agit8r
The difference in taste is actually due to lax safety regulations... any idea how fast a body dissolves in a vat of phosphoric acid flavored syrup? o_0
    4. gtally
Is that what they mean by a "full bodied" soft drink?
    5. Agit8r
they simulate the same thing in Mountain Dew with "bromelated vegetable oil"
    6. gtally
You are a sick, sick little gnome, Agit8r.
    7. Agit8r
this is true... check out the link I dropped on the "Brussels Sprouts" thread
    8. gtally
      I'm afraid, very very afraid.
    9. Agit8r
      not that bad, was it?
    10. gtally
      Still afraid to click.
    11. Agit8r
      "Sweet Potato Beer" that's all
    12. gtally
      Well, that's not so bad.

[runs off to brussel sprouts thread to check]
  11. wagerwitch
This is soooo not the discussion I thought it would be before I clicked on it.

    LMAO!
    1. gtally
Erm, no. I mean the other kind of coke, the Coca Cola kind. Sorry to disappoint.
  12. greencurmudgeon
We have a version of Pepsi here in Britain called "Pepsi Raw" which is made with cane sugar and no artificial flavours; while I'm not a big cola drinker, I have to admit that it tastes far better than its counterparts.
    1. gtally
I'm not sure Pepsi could taste good under any circumstances.
  13. SweetViolet
My grandmother used to make root beer in the cellar. Wonderful stuff! Unfortunately, the recipe went to her grave with her.

Because my husband is diabetic, we buy only sugar-free soft drinks (called "cooldrink" here). But I remember that I didn't like Coke as a kid (8 oz green glass bottles) because it was so fizzy it hurt!

Some of my faves (before switching to sugar-free) was Vernor's ginger ale, Orange Crush, and Squirt. As a child, my favourite store-bought soda was Nehi grape.

Now y'all know for a fact that I am an old lady!
    1. busylizzy
NEHI!!!! Orange and grape. You brought back some happy memories!
  14. acousticguitarist
wow... you drink that stuff.. that's daring
  15. MadMadMargo
You are so right, it is awesome. Try the Mexican Sprite, it tastes like liquid cotton candy.
  16. exit2013
Oh, thank goodness, i thought you were talking about the 'real thing'!
  17. cookingasshole
Every mexican place around here has them. You just have to ask the guy with the sunglasses standing in the corner. No seriously, you can find it everywhere around here. Pepsi too.
    1. gtally
It just hit my grocery store, or at least just came to my notice.
    2. cookingasshole
I have checked some of them and they they still have HFCS. So be sure to check the label.
    3. DollinNYC
Are we talking about Mexican coke or Mexican coke?
    4. cookingasshole
coke...the fun stuff...right? I hate it when they cut it with HFCS.
    5. gtally
Coca Cola and high fructose corn syrup are a nasty combination! Bleah! Sweet potato bad!
    6. Agit8r
      @doll

i think they are talking about the coal dust
  18. askcherlock
I just heard that Red Bull has coke in it. True or not I don't know. I'll be back later. Going to the store...:)
  19. Agit8r
Dang!... couldn't find any pics of "sweet potato gnomes"
    1. gtally
How about gnomes force feeding sweet potatoes to cooking@$$hole?

    2. cookingasshole
      that is sick pornography!
    3. dbowles1017
I will never see gnomes or monkeys the same way
    4. Agit8r
      yamboarding?

seriously GT, did you just arrange that in your garden?
    5. DollinNYC
      ROFLLMAO!
    6. cookingasshole
I owe you a huge one for that gtally...it is on!
    7. gtally
Agit8r -- It popped up with a Google Images search on "yam garden gnomes," page 5.

ca -- the picture caption actually says the gnomes are "tickling" the monkey, which I think is somehow worse.
    8. Agit8r
      wow...... that IS sick
    9. cookingasshole
      tickling the monkey with what?
    10. Agit8r
      with a "yam"? o_0
    11. cookingasshole
I like how the picture is blurry...like it is an action shot or something
    12. Agit8r
the release of that photo is going to endanger gnomes everywhere!
    13. gtally
I think with this compromising photo, there goes cooking@$$hole's chance to hold on to his Miss California crown.
    14. Agit8r
      true... pretty racy stuff, there

Those women had more issues than just drinking Red Bull. It sounds like they were also seriously cracked in the head. 10-15 Red Bulls a day and no food in order to lose weight?

Red Bull has no nutritional value and has so much caffeine I was shaking and vomiting after 1/2 can. I haven't touched the stuff ever since.
    1. Stillthinking
I just realized I posted this comment in the wrong thread. I meant to post it to the "get our children stoned" thread.
    2. gtally
It still applies. Someone above was singing the praises of Red Bull, so it all works.
