There's a poll going on over at LillyMouse about milk, whether it's good or bad for you...
www.lillymouse.com/bloggers-milk-sucks/
Some pretty strong, and disgusting, reasons were given about why NOT to enjoy the white stuff.
What do you think? I'd really like it if you added your voice over on the poll!
Thanks.
Ciao for now, Lilly Mouse

okay, thought i post some of the arguments against milk here:
1. It gives you a snotty nose.
2. You’re drinking pus. Dairy cows are milked so often their poor udders develop open wounds. That blood and pus is part of the milk you drink. The dairy industry term for measuring the pus content in milk is: “somatic cell count”
3. It gives you pimples. The fat, animal protein, sugar and hormones in milk can irritate the skin. My eczema and acne have disappeared since crossing milk off my shopping list.
4. It contains rat poison, or Vitamen D-3. This vitamin is advertised helping your to absorb calcium. In fact it does the opposite.
5. It makes you fart. Dairy cows are breed now-a-days with hormones pumped into them for abnormally large udders. The milk is also pasturized removing natural enzymes that would help with digesting the substance. The result? It’s awfully hard for our little tummies to process this milk, and the result is flatulancy.
6. It may even cause osteoporosis, thanks to the high-protein content which leaches calcium from your bones! (Exactly the opposite of what dairy industries advertise!)-
1. It gives you a snotty nose.
That's an old wives tale. Do some research.
I love milk. I drink at least one nice, big glass a day. These days everything's full of toxins of varying kinds. Guess if you want to worry about it, you can stop eating & drinking altogether. In the meantime, I'm going to go have a nice, big glass of milk. -
It definitely gives me a snotty nose... actually experienced it (real green boogeroos!
).
I might be wrong - but I think drinking a substance intended for a creature with 4 chambers to its stomach when humans only have 1, is likely to cause issues.
I like the taste of milk though, wish I could drink it. -

First off, this has never been proven.
Second, this statement comes directly from PETA, who requested an official "Got Beer?" campaign to quell milk drinking in college students, and who also asked the govenor of WI to change the state's official beverage from milk to beer. You stay classy PETA.
Third, research still shows that drinking milk helps stave off osteoperosis in women, though as you age it is less effective.
But what really matters is that the funding behind anti-milk campaigns rarely have anything to do with human health issues, but are in fact fronts to push a pro-animal message. Should cows be treated decently? For sure, but a disengenuous campaign certainly doesn't help anything other then cultivate ignorance. -
They have also found traces of rocket fuel in Californian cows. Not to mention puss and blood from the cows being overmilked and having infections. Now, because the cost of feed has gone up so much some dairy farmers have started feeding their cows potato chips and candybars because it's cheaper...Just think what that could do to the milk the cows produce. Disgusting!

Drinking milk (especially animal milk) is akin to drinking blood, seriously. I don't touch the stuff.
-
There all kinds of reasons that make milk a horrible thing to drink and I think I have them all. But I love milk. I have been drinking it my entire life. On that note, I worked in a few restaurants when I was younger and I saw all the terrible things that can happen to food. I learned that food is never, ever as clean as most people seem to think. But I still, I love to eat out. My guess is that if everybody in today's society knew everything about the food in today's world, most people would be afraid to eat anything.
-
I love milk, cream and dairy products. Luckily I have access to all of these from local organic farmers. I even know the cows personally and they come to me for a head scratch when I call them by name.
-
I haven't had a glass of milk since I was in my teens. I don't like the taste of it but, more importantly, it causes mucus in my throat that is so thick it almost chokes me. Oddly, if I put plenty of ice in the glass and drink the milk down very quickly, that problem is mitigated. But I don't like the taste of it so I don't bother.
I do get plenty of dairy, however, in butter, cheese, yoghurt, and ice cream.
As an aside, I and all three of my children were allergic to cow's milk (and non-soy formulas) in infancy and early childhood. My youngest was even allergic to breastmilk. -
I love milk. I drink at least a glass full daily...
If we look hard enough we usually can find a good reason to stop eating or drinking something we don't like.
-
As long as the milk is not from China (3 babies were reported dead already as of last update) earthlyexplorations.blogspot.com/2008/09/contaminated-milk-product-kills-ba... it's alright.
As long as you are not lactose intolerant, it's alright.
As long as you do not follow strictly the GFCF diet milk is fine. -
I love milk always have always will. Research aside, it's a personal preference. Besides if it wasn't for milk I'd have to take a very nasty tasting, expensive medication for my ulcer.
-
Milk isn't for everyone for sure but it has worked for my family just fine. If my brother is drinking something chances are it's Milk. He goes thru a gallon a day and why not?
As for me: None of these side-effects apply to me, No snot here.
Really, As a guy who has done drugs, smoked, drank a ton and was raised in a state that was pretty much oil companies playground plus New Yorks dumping ground...... Milk shouldn't be a concern.
I see it like this. There are people who like pure healthy lifestyles, Maybe even Milk Free, Yet they get cancer. At the same time you have those who live like a Biker with terrible habbits and anger which drives his blood preasure thru the roof but you find him 80something, Still kicking. Funny how things work sometimes.
LEAVE MY MILK ALONE!

In my opinion milk is cleaner and healthier than most things you drink. Think about all the chlorine that goes into your body when you drink public water.
I drink 2% milk and bottled spring water.-
Think about what also goes into "spring water", Before it's filtered that is.
Funny thing about bottle water is that alot of the brands out there get their water from tap water. That plus plastics can be bad on some brands.
So yeah, Milk is healthier than you think. You have a better chance of eating a bad salad than some bad milk. Atleast you can smell and taste when milk is bad.

I think it's weird to drink the milk of another mammal. And why cows? Why don't we drink horse milk or dog milk? Didn't nature intend that humans drink human milk, cows drink cow milk, rats drink rat milk, etc.?
And just fyi, over 50 years ago, the average cow produced 2,000 pounds of milk per year. Today, the top producers give 50,000 pounds. I don't even want to know what drugs, hormones, antibiotics are force fed to these cows. MMmmm... a cup full of pesticides please.
Also, the chinese babies didn't die from drinking milk, they died from the toxic chemical melamine - a chemical used in the production of plastics and glues. www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=747328-
Try getting a gallon of milk by milking a rat.
As for dogs, cats and horses we only use them as pets or recreation. That is until they die, Then we turn them into pig food, dog food or glue.
So yeah, Cows are good because of quanity.
As for pesticides, I hope you don't have strong feelings on world hunger. Alot of people get fed thanks to quanities being boosted via chemical alteration. Otherwise milk would be $10 a gallon (Which down here it was for about a month).
If you have the option to eat better, Go for it, But why poke at something that helps feed people for cheaper who otherwise would be living more malnutritioned.
It's not a major problem as long as we have groups to look out and make sure the food doesn't become unhealthy. Simple as that but people like to make it into a bigger thing than it really is.

Just like I like giving 2cents here in the forums .. I like drinking 2% milk~!!
My wife used to drink skim milk, but has switched in the past 2 months to "So Good" Soy ????? (milk? soy milk?) or whatever you call that crap - I hate it. -
Hmmm, this is an interesting one. I have been drinking 2% for years, but I am thinking about switching to soy. Only because I have been experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned above. Anyway, I love the taste of cold milk, and I can't give it up completely, but I might have to make some adjustments.

I drink milk, mostly if I've just eaten chocolate. I also find that a glass of milk before bed helps me sleep. Especially if there's a shot or two of amaretto in the milk.
-
I drink Lactaid.. the fat in milk will make me kinda poop
Boobjuice should not be legal over the age of 2 -
There is no definitive answer to your question -- it depends on who you ask. Here are some of the health pros and cons:
PROS:
* Calcium, which is important for healthy bones, is abundant in milk and dairy products. Although it's possible to get ample calcium without milk, it does take some careful planning. Additionally, the calcium in milk is well absorbed by the digestive tract because the vitamin D and lactose found in milk facilitate calcium absorption.
* Skim milk and products made from skim milk are very low in fat and cholesterol, and contain a complete source of protein.
* Milk is also a good source of phosphorous, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D, and riboflavin (a B vitamin).
CONS:
* Whole milk, or anything made of whole milk, is high in saturated fat, which can increase cholesterol level.
* Milk is a common cause of food allergy (allergy to milk protein).
* Many people, especially adults, lack the enzyme to digest lactose (milk sugar). This is called lactose intolerance, which causes bloating, gas, and diarrhea.
* Milk (and meat for that matter) may contain the antibiotics given to the animal before slaughter. It has been argued that when humans then eat the dairy or meat products, they absorb the antibiotics, potentially allowing for bacteria harmful to humans to become more resistant to these antibiotics. The consequence is that when antibiotics are prescribed, they may not be as effective at killing the bacteria as they once were.
The Dairy Council has more information on the pros of milk. Alice recommends their booklet called "Newer Knowledge of Milk and Other Fluid Dairy Products." Call 212.764.4060 to request a copy. Another book called, Don't Drink Your Milk, by Frank A. Oski, MD, will give you more information on the other side of the story. well, the argument for now is purely health related (but I don't drink milk because of the treatment of dairy cows too).
Pasturized milk is apparently the worst - it kills natural enzymes that would help digest it.
But unpastuerized is apparently not great either - it's still intended for a creature with four chambers to it's stomach...
(and yes, Zawadi, it's cow's boobjuice
) -
yip, I see that now. I imagine very few people have access to dairy products from cows farmed in green pastures with bells on their necks and a girl called 'Tinker' to milk them...
Nowadays, I think around 90% of milk comes from factory farming conditions (especially in America).
I have read this, but I'd be hard pressed to find my source right now - 'tis midnight here in Rome.
Sooo, happy dreams fellow blogcatalog types

Betsuzdav, you are probably becoming lactose intolerant. I did some research on it when I found out my daughter is lactose intolerant. Most people develop intolerance as they age. If you really like milk, take a Lactaid and drink up.
I tried soy milk, rice milk, every kind of milk substitute and my daughter hated them all. At 16, I wasn't going to push it. If she wants dairy, she takes a Lactaid.
However, she has some acne, and since she has stopped drinking any beverage except water, her face has almost totally cleared up. Just FYI.
I don't like milk. I eat dairy products occasionally but I won't drink it. However, I think it's reasonably safe.
here's a fun fact most women don't know: you should get 1,000 mg a day of calcium. If you don't also get Vitamin D, it's not absorbed and useless. So I take Os Cal. My mother hates milk but has taken Os Cal for years. She has NO osteoporosis and has lost no height. My aunt, who refused to take calcium supplements 30 years ago and told my mother SHE got all her calcium from drinking milk, now has terrible osteoporosis. She has lost 7 inches in height and is on oxygen all the time. She is 78 and looks 90. MORAL: women need calcium!! -
Here are a couple of good articles from the Organic Consumers Association about milk:

Milk really isn't good for you and has been linked to colon cancer and a variety of respiratory conditions. But if you're going to drink it at least go Organic. -
What I find amazing is that alot of people who think as you guys who don't like milk continue to smoke and drink while preaching about how nasty and bad milk is for you.
-
LOL! Well, at least it's one less toxin in our systems.
No, milk isn't as bad for you as smoking cigarettes (I quit a few years ago), but, for instance in my case, I was suffering from severe bronchitis every year and the doctors wanted to cut me open because they thought I had cancer. I stopped drinking milk and ALL of my symptoms went away in a month. Pretty remarkable if you ask me. That's more than just a mild lactose intolerance. -
Yeah that sounds bad, I'm not a big fan of doctors so if I had something like that effecting me i'd drop the milk too.
But as I said it varries from each person, In my family we use grease up the ying and love sugar and spices to the yang. All of those things are bad but the Family Tree has alot of people who die only once they went past 80. My Grandfather is 95 and up until three years ago he was riding a bike. He had to stop because he fell off one time otherwise he'd still be riding.
As for my health, I'm a big dude but doctors I went to say apart from me being fat everything is as it should be. No problems at all. As I'm getting older I see I do need to live healthier which is why I quit smoking, drinking, junkfood and drugs but i'll be damned if I give up my milk!

I'm 43 and still drink 2-4 cups a day. In winter nights we (3 boys, wife and myself) prepare a big pan with milk, cocoa, sugar and some corn starch to make it thicker. On hot summer evenings we prepare a jar of refrigerated milk with cocoa and sugar. Yummmy!!
I also love cheese, butter, yogurt, cream, ice creams and everything milk-related.
I wasn't aware, but you can tell from the glass in my hand
-
1. Cows milk is NOT intended to be digested in all the four chambers of the calves stomach, only the one that works like the human stomach. In the calf, there is a kind of gutter that helps the milk bypass the three fore stomachs. In fact, if the gutter leaks too much, and the calf gets milk in the rumen (that's the first chamber), it can cause some serious problems.
2. If you feed cows with potato chips and chocolate bars, they die - the cows rumen has a limited capacity to digest carbohydrates.
3. The bad skin associated with drinking milk could very well be due to allergy. At least in dogs, it seems that mild allergies to different allerges can add up to cause symptoms, and removing just one of the allergens can help (that's what the dog food manufacturers tell us, anyway). - But this is just a thought that came into MY mind while reading this, and dogs are not small humans.
4. I've seen plenty of puss filled udders, and still use milk and dairy products every day - I've even had fresh milk (directly from the udder to table) in my coffee several times without any hesitation.
5. If you don't like milk, get unpleasent symptoms from drinking it, or feel that it's wrong to treat cows in the way dairy cows most often are treated (and it ain't always pretty)- don't drink it! It's your right not to, unless you're a child and your parents tell you to do it
-
You have some really good points Troll - but i truly believe there are health complications associated with milk not being told to the public. The dairy farming industry spends a great deal of money talking about the benefits of milk, but little time explaining some of the complications.
Why do I truly believe these things? From trial and error. Last night by boyfriend twisted my arm into eating yogurt (
sounds REALLY silly, I know, not like he was convincing me to shoot up with heroine!) ... poor guy, don't think he'll suggest it again... see point 5.) top of thread
I suppose you could see this thread (and article, thanks to Hannah) as providing balance!
Didn't know you point (1.) which is a great piece of info, thanks.
And as for fresh milk, milked by hand from a happy farm dairy cow that's not been pumped with hormones, I'd treat myself with it's milk once in a while (same way I indulge in a shot of vodka or two
)
I think the main thing is, there's a string of alternatives that have absolutely no health complications.
It's been great reading these responses, but I'm still pretty convinced that the white stuff be bad....
