French-speaking Miss Belgium winner Alizee Poulicek, 20, was booed by parts of a 3,400-strong Antwerp audience when she revealed she could not speak Dutch.

...

The organiser of the contest, Darlene Davos, said it could have been far worse.

"It is the least painful thing [lack of knowledge of the Dutch language spoken by 60% of the Belgian population]," she said. "I would consider it different if they had said: 'Miss Belgium is an ugly girl'."

Do you think that a Miss representing a country should speak the most common languages of that nation or do you agree with the organiser that beauty priors on language skills?

I'll make it more concrete for some people here: What if Miss USA barely speaks English, would you mind?

Hmm.. what's the issue here ...

      1) That Miss Belgium doesnt speak Dutch?
      or
      2) 3400 Twerps in Antwerp boo'ed a Beauty Queen?

I think the booing is the issue really

      but great publicity

Honestly, I think those pageants are pretty worthless, but I see the point. Why would you want someone to "represent" your country if they can't speak the language. Doesn't make much sense.

Most of those women are not very intelligent in the first place so I am not surprised. And in America our primary language is Spanish now, didn't you know that? lol
    1. Manictastic
Lo sé, español sera muy importante en el futuro Viva los Estados Unidos

i don't think you're right to say they are not intelligent. People may think it it's a 'dumb' thing to do but to whitewash everybody that has ever set foot on a stage as a beauty queen as dumb is a very limited way of looking at people. Even that greatest and most brilliant human beings will have things in their past that don't fit with the idea of 'intelligent'.

So maybe we need to seperate 'a dumb thing to do' from being 'dumb'.

And there are many versions of the word intelligent. Maybe 'emotional intelligence' is the inteligence worth aspiring to, but that takes time.

My spanish is extremely rusty...something about Spanish being important in the future and living in the United States?
    1. Manictastic
Yea, something like that Your Spanish is still good. Just watch a telenovela from time to time and your Spanish won't fade as quickly.

I took five years of it in school, but rarely use it these days...only to help out someone in a grocery store from time to time.

It's always so sad if one stops using a language he has learned, because it fades so quickly. That bit of German they thought me at school, geesh, it has completely disappeared. And the French I know has had better days as well. Languages, they come so hard and go so easy

Well, I think the organizer's comments were pretty insightful. Better they dislike Miss Belgium for being ignorant than - gasp! - ugly. Kind of says it all.

Surely the first question should be point out Belgium on an atlas and see how many get it right....
    1. Unfettered
Um, but like, all my friends, like, totally know where, like, Belgium is already! Like, gosh!
    2. Manictastic
Belgium, the country surrounding Brussels, that'll help
