Not only will most not care, a few will endeavour to delete what they deem not to be legal (authoritative) truth.

As I was one of the only two Canadian delegates involved in the FAO ANGR e-conference last year I'm keenly aware of such issues across the board and the world from GE crop production animal production.

Many poeple the world over who think as I do have been battling with Monsanto and other agri-business GE and GMO multinationals for years. In some cases we have made small gains but it must be understood that governments are in bed with these taxpayers subsidized multi-national welfare bums who are poisoning the air, land, food and water that we are defendant upon for our very lives.

This BC General Discussion forum is a social forum, and many members far are more interested in "light weight" subjects than in discussing heavy matters. It's my experience that when we post threads on important issues in the General Discussion forum they sink like stones.

However, if we post a thread on something sex related or even just plain silliness, or a b*tching and whining thread it will make the front page. Such is the nature of this online diverse community. [shrug]

That's awsome TT. How does one get involved in that?
      2. timethief
Dang! I can't reveal that online. I belong to many Canadian and even international agricultural associations that are focused on producing healthy foods by organic methods. I'm a political and environmental activist with a lengthy history of social advocacy and activism, and when called upon and then selected to be a delegate I chose to serve. I am now officially "retired".

I did a little that I could do. I protested against the GM brinjal with Greenpeace and the protest was a success. The Team of govt officials that was studying the case agreed with us and stayed the move.

I don't trust Bayer at all, not since they let HIV contaminated blood products out into the 3rd world market. People should get the death sentence for stuff like that.
      1. trailofpen
1st world, 2nd world, 3rd world. What the hell does it matter? They let it get out there knowingly. I saw you edited your message. Don't ruffle my feathers.
      2. wagerwitch
I am going to say something here - but I was contaminated with HCV (not HIV) through Gamma Globulin Products AFTER - the supposed clean up of blood products.

I do NOT trust the Medical Industry - and believe that the ONLY consequence they see is the return of money through forced legislature and pharmaceutical sales.

USDA Choice means jack squat to me.

        And so does the FDA...
      3. timethief
The government is supposed to be the people's advocate -- ha!
The USDA and FDA need a complete overhaul and heads ought to start rolling - now!

Dude, you're ruffling your own feathers.

the problem with 3rd world countries is Ignorance. I would never get the same response in Indian forums as I get form you people.

I’m personally against Genetically Modified Foods but what can an individual do it is all over the place now.
        1. marketborn
Ask the govt to at least get the companies to label GM foods separately. Let the people choose. Why force that crap on us?

President Obama announced Tuesday July 7, 2009 that a working group within his Administration will focus on the regulation of some of the nation’s most popular goods in an effort to tighten food safety and reduce salmonella and E. coli contamination.

While this is a step in the right direction for food safety in the US, is it enough? Jaydee Hanson with the Center for Food Safety says that it is not; that there is much more to be done. The Center recommends that food safety warrants its own agency within the government. Recent recalls of foods including peanuts, pistachios, cookie dough and beef are all incidences that call for action.
          www.centerforfoodsafety.org/home.cfm

President Obama has assembled a great team – including Michael Taylor, who is expected to be announced as the new FDA Deputy Commissioner of Food – within the FDA. Luckily, they work well together, but the US public cannot rely on luck when it comes to their food safety.

India shouldn't accept Europe-rejected GM crop: scientists warn
New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) Two European scientists visiting the capital Friday warned India against accepting genetically modified (GM) crops and foods technology rejected by European nations. ...

Within the next one year, the Indian market may open its doors to Bt brinjal, a genetically modified version of the common vegetable. While government officials claim the crop won't be released without adequate safety assurance, campaigners and scientists have asserted that the safety precautions are unreliable.

Thanks for you concern people. But the Law makers in india are Idiots and the Implementers are bastards. No seriously they did that with BT Cotton. All that you need to do is throw some dollars at these beggars. BT cotton was a farce and it led to dozens of farmer suicides.

So in short, I'd like to say that those MNCs can go and go screw up their own reputations as much as they like and dig their own graves.

          Background notes:
India is one of the world's largest exporters of the long grained, aromatic Basmati rice. The protests began in 2003.
In 2005, Bt rice field trials were conducted in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. In 2006, trials were carried out in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
In 2007 Greenpeace India called upon Indian rice exporters (world's third largest) to press for a ban on GE rice to stop flooding vulnerable markets with GE rice.

I grow or buy locally alot of our own food. I do not like GM food nor will I feed it to my animals I buy their food from a local farm also.
        1. timethief
Good for you. I'm the same. Although we no longer keep livestock or poultry we purchase as much food as we can from local organic farmers, and orchardists too. We are able to produce small amounts of vegetables in containers on our very large deck every year. We have a very successful Farmer's Market here and community gardens that we take part in as well.
        2. amybyrd21
we over grew in our garden this year and I am spreading it around to alot of diffrent people. But if we move then I will have to start all over again

Genetic engineering is the largest food experiment in the history of the world. We are all the guinea pigs.

There are about 40 varieties of genetically engineered crops approved for marketing in the U.S. As a result, 60-70% of the foods on your grocery shelves contain genetically engineered (GE) components.

Genetically engineered foods contain substances that have never been a part of the human food supply. They are not subjected to rigorous pre-market safety testing. And THEY ARE NOT LABELED.

Is genetic engineering safe for you and your family? Safe for the environment? Safe for the future of mankind? No long-term studies have been done. No one can answer these questions.

I respect that and pose these very issues in my new book. This issue is one that will be a battle for quite some time. Thanks for the post and thanks for the commentary. Good discussion.

I think in every im/export there is/are always certificate signed by the exporters and of course they need to run a quality testing before exporting out goods. Why an accident like this still happens, its like the one, that Sanlu milk before.
