Possible...especially after all the Sybil hype some years ago. But a lot of us wondered why we were living multiple lives, too.

    It is absolutely possible.

My mother suffers from this. They called it schizophrenia then - but changed it to MPD - then to DID

I swear - it is all the same thing tho...

Makes growing up very interesting. LOL!

I do not have a deep knowledge of this, but apparently, there is a difference between schizophrenia and MPD

Some people thought I had that till they recognized that I'm intersexed. Then the dawn.
    1. angelshair
Was it psychologist or other people?
    2. LynneaUrania
Other people. The professionals urged me to transition clear back in 1986 because of it. But because I identified as female while trying to live as a male, it brought a host of repercussions.

Wow! That might not have been a simple process!

It wasn't. It took decades to really sort through. Religion in this case was more a barrier to solutions than a medium of finding them. Sad.

I have this disorder: for some odd reason I behave differently on different sites (Facebook, BC, SU,etc...) and depending on who I am talking to. Sometimes I'm talking to someone offline (it does happen, although very rarely!) and I notice in the middle of the conversation that I'm starting to talk with their accent!

I tend to pick up people's accents. It's called mimicry and we all do it to some extent. Some people take it farther unconsciously or consciously. Think about Gwyneth Paltrow or Madonna suddenly speaking with British accents. I don't think they are doing it to be obnoxious. They did it because they absorbed all the people around them speaking with British accents.

I had a British roommate and started picking up her accent unconsciously. After I watch a British period movie with Emma Thompson, I can imitate her perfectly. Can't with other British actors, but for some reason, I can with her.

Happened again when I worked with colleague from Texas.

I will say, I preferred the British accent to the Southern.
Asians with Southern accents are a little too comical.

    LOL sophie...

No angel - My mother was born in the 40's. So during the 70's diagnosed as Schizophrenic Auditory (hearing voices)

Then they said she was MPD ---- made sense to me - because every day was a new day for me. LOL!

Now they are saying she is DID - because her personalities do not have knowledge of each other. And I guess she's splintered off - gathering more "moods"... And each mood is distinctly different.

I don't really mind her being nuts - it was just a different way to grow up.
  6. angelshair
And her, how does she lives with that?
  7. wagerwitch
I guess it's ok - she really doesn't recognize that she has an issue. If you were to meet her, in any of her moods, you wouldn't realize there was anything wrong with her.

But - after you've been there, you'd notice the shifts. The differences - you'd understand that the person in front of you believes in a different reality than what you see or hear in front of you.

Not - like she sees things constantly - it's kind of cyclic, I think, that's what I've noticed.

I'm serious tho - the personalities are so interwoven that it's a constant shift, constant thing so that they alter right in front of you - and unless you know what to look for, unless you know that this "mood" the angry one - or the meek and sad one - or the aggresive one - or the hippy one - or the party one and whatever else is in the mix is the one that is out at the moment - and you've watched the behavior of each mood - you wouldn't really know that there was a problem.

I think that she is content - but has a hard time understanding why her friends often leave after getting to know her.

In a lot of ways, she's like a Hippy Child on Flashbacks... LOL!

Seriously tho - unless you realized that the nurse/student/sex-pot slut/business pro/hippy/new age/spiritualist sides weren't just typical behavior - you wouldn't notice.

It's hard to explain - I've never really tried. My friends know what I mean tho - was kind of hard not to miss it if you hung out at my house.... LOL

There's a show coming on soon to one of the networks that I'm dying to watch to see if it's similar. The United Nations of _______ I can't remember the name of it. But the previews were interesting.

My mom didn't exactly dress up to please each of her moods. She more or less was herself - but... uhm... I dunno... Different?

So - when you ask Do I believe in it?

Yes. Wholeheartedly. I think that it's real. I think that people shatter for some reason... I KNOW why my mother shattered. It's part chemical and it's part trauma.

Do I believe it is a complete and fragmented person from the whole.

    Undeniably.

Do I think my mother is faking all of those things? Not a chance.

Do I think that every psychologist/psychiatrist would classify my mom as DID or MPD or both? Yeah.. I do.

    Does she notice it?

Nah - she always thinks she's right... And she thinks that at times that she is a mystical Chakra warrior who needs to spread spiritualism around with magic herbs... Yet, she wants to run a professional business. The house MUST stay clean, unless she decides to throw the dishes. All sorts of weirdness... LOL!

Anyhow - we don't talk to much - she's off on another adventure - prolly with Carlos Casteneda or something.

The way you describe her, I can't feel any real problem, exept for the people close to her for who she might be hard to follow.
I love Carlos Castaneda too, and want to spread spiritualisme^_^...the only difference is that I do not want my house to stay absolutly clean, I am very messy.
Very nice portrait of your mom, she is the kind of person I love to meet with.

I believe it is possible, but not as prolific as everyone likes to think it is. People who do bad things, like commit crimes like to use it as an excuse, and most of the time they are full of bull. But it does and can happen.
  10. wagerwitch
Yeah - angel - well she is amusing at times.

It can be very frustrating to those of us who know her... But sometimes to new people - she's certainly "interesting".

I had read a novel with a taste of multiple identity disorder by Sheldon "Tell Me Your Dreams"
