Hey all.
We run a music blog based in Finland (next to Sweden, you know) and have just recently launched it. We feature all fresh perspectives within the music industry, concentrating on performing arts, releases, interviews and so on.
So we know there are a ton of music blogs out there and ours is ultimately no different, at least not on a large enough scale. Our angle is that blogging is not that commonly used here and we are targeting an in the country perspective and readers abroad Finland who are interested in our artists.
So, what makes or breaks a music blog in your opinion?
What are the big no no's and the BIG yes's?
3, 2, 1.. go!

Ok where's your link?
It's sensible to add it to make it easy for people, instead of bouncing through the layers.-
I didn't include the link on purpose. I didn't intend this to be a feedback thread about our music blog, but about what you would want to see in a music blog. More on the general plateau if you know what I mean.
For example, what do you look for in music blogs. Are you interested in interviews, reviews or more on the gossip side? What are your turn offs and so on.
But if you want to see our blog, then you can follow this link.

Ok, I've had a look, it's interesting, I like the idea of supporting local music.
You need to get some surveys up, get peoples opinions Survey Monkey,
a newsletter of gigs coming up and profile different artists in it.
Make relationship with some recording places and maybe some art galleries or something else to cross into other areas of arts.
A list of the venues where people play the sort of stuff that you deal with.
It's good if you can get people interacting If it was me, I'd build a social network straight away, it's a bit of work, but I use ning and am currently testing different things. But in my case I have a stack of IT web students that have been involved. Each band could have a profile, linking to their own site. My network is for IT and testing SEO and for creating relationships with local business eventually. It's 6 weeks old blingat.ning.com
My profile is blingat.ning.com/profile/TonyHogan
It is hard to make people social, a lot of people just want to play.
Maybe create your own youtube channel.
Is that enough to star with?
Oh by the way, I am the worlds best acoustic guitar blogger theguitars.net and acousticguitarists.net
I am not spamming, just giving you an idea of the ways I work
Tony... oh and you might need a red panda or something cute like that

I like music blogs that post cool mp3's of music I didn't know about.
Also like it when the blog has a definite "flavor" and doesn't try to cover just everything.
If I see top-40 content I leave immediately, good luck! -
That's great Tony, thanks for taking the time out for that!
It is definitely hard to make people social, especially here in Finland since blogging and the internet community is not nearly as widely used as in the US for example. I especially got caught on that social network on ning. I will definitely check that out, as that seems like a viable channel for getting people in the loop. And work we don't mind, it's un-necessary work that we're allergic to

I look for something other than music videos with a ten-word introduction. I want a recommendation and a sample, when I visit a music blog. Tell me what you like about it, of whom the band reminds you, the fact that the band sucks except for this one great song. Gossip I don't need. Good music I do. You don't have to provide a download, but give me a way to hear the songs.

So basically you want some good journalism too, right? That's always needed, there's just no point writing if you aren't good at it.
Is there something that music blogs are seriously missing on?
We've done a lot of background research the past couple of weeks and it's surprising how many music blogs are actually just repeating older statements and news. Shouldn't it be about bringing something fresh and new to the table? Well, maybe that's just really hard to establish..

I want editorial, not journalism. I can read about who's in a band and their personal backgrounds anywhere, including the band's/singer's own site. I'd rather get your personal opinion of the songs you're posting. Tell me something different about it - does it make you think of a particular season or place? Does the sound match the description that the artists/promo folks have posted about it? Was there a particularly good or bad review with which you want to take issue?
For me, those are the best sorts of music blogs. If I'm interested in the personnel, I'll look them up on MySpace and the label. If I want a "professional" review, I'll got to magazine sites. I'm curious to know if they're any good and why I should take the time to give them a listen. Give me substance, not regurgitated hype. -

I like reading more in-depth interviews with musicians and songwriters. Not the usual interview-just-to-promote-their-music kind of stuff, but a bit more under the surface about their musicianship, motivations and such. Things that give a new perspective on the band and their music.
Also, interactivity is great. Things that involve the audience in some kind of meaningful way. If you know some time in advance who you're going to interview, maybe you could have a poll on the blog about what people would like to ask the band, or something similar.
