To help me on my blogs, if you are going to buy an album or a certain song, do you buy the CD or download the MP3 of it?

Well, buying the album is the right way. But...

I ment pay downloads for the MP3s. Not no free stuff.

It depends on how much I like/love it. If it's a favorite artist's new album, I'll buy the CD for my collection (then rip it and put it in storage). If it's someone new (or someone by whom I only like a song or two), I'll buy individual songs digitally.

I will buy the CD even if it only has 3 good songs. i like how an album tells a story.

I find that they don't, by and large. Certainly there are great story albums out there or themed ones like The Dandy Warhols and their album based on Vonnegut's Monkey House, but they seem to be the exceptions to the rule. Most are simply a collection of the songs that the artist/record company wanted to release, mediocre songs hanging off of the occasional single-worthy tune.

It depends on your kind of genre. mine is Celtic music so there are vocal and instrumental pieces. There are songs that a particular instrument is highlighted, there are also solo vocals. Now though I love this kind of music, I admit that I can tell if a song falls into place or not. I can also detect if there are songs that are done for the sake of making a filler in the album. My take is, all in all getting a complete album is still a rewarding experience only if you are really a fan of that particular artist. When I got Watermark by Enya, I like the fact that each song varies in terms of arrangement. You have the first track as instrumental, followed by choral; then it switched to solo voice and back and forth. This is what I love about buying an album especially if an artist has a good arrangement of where each track should be.

    Limewire....

Unless it's one of the groups I truly admire and want to support.

i've run classes about limewire and file sharing vulnerabilities and hacks, it's not such a healthy computer habit.

do people understand how it works? And why it is such a no, no?

There is a way to set it up so it is some degree safer

But why take the chance? You're vulnerable enough wandering about on the web without actively downloading things from total strangers (as opposed to, say, trusted web sites or bloggers). There's enough free music for listening on-line to make it by far not worth risking my entire hard drive.

    I download on iTunes.

Rarely do I buy albums unless I know I like more than 4 songs on the cd. I normally just purchase the single from itunes.

I buy mine through Amazon. Then they're mine, all mine, forever. I get a few through Zune, because I get to keep ten a month with my subscription (and keep unlimited ones as long as I keep up that subscription), but those can't be shared with anyone who doesn't have the same software so I can't share them with hubby or bring them to work. I wish I'd realized that before I started the subscription. [sigh] When I buy music, I expect to own it and be able to install it on any of the computers in my life (all five of them, if I so choose, and the external hard drive).

Whoops! I'll just stop ranting now.

I only buy CD's and will not invest in MP3's at all

Nothing beats the sound of physical media.

I won about 3 CD's, so definitely downloads for me

ITunes for me, and I usually only get the whole album if I think the whole album is good. This usually only pertains to my favorite artists. Like someone said earlier, many albums these days hinge on one single-worthy track.
