to everyone who is saying "I wish I could too". you do realize this is a self-published book and any of you can just as easily do this through a site like lulu.com it costs about 100 dollars to be sell-able thorough amazon and b&n. can be done much cheaper than that if you are willing to sell on lulu's site.

self-publishing is like self-murdering any chances you have to ever be represented in most cases. I don't recommend it. Writting should make you $$ not take some away from you. imo people who self publish r not real authors. it's like nominating yourself for an award or paying $ to get praised. but what do I know it's not like I wrote Harry Potter or something:D

what most struck me about it, lolita, is that she went for a particularly Expensive self publishing service rather than a much cheaper one that is just as good. Everyone it seems wants to be a published author, and now in the Internet era there is a whole new resurgence of what used to be called "vanity publishing".
But there is a HUGE difference between being able to write Something and self publish through a service like lulu or iUniverse and getting a contract with Knopf for your first book

hmmm it never occured to me...that it can go that way. interesting. congratulations!!!! i want to be able to do that someday.
-
if you've written something, just go to lulu and publish it. it appears the author of the OP used a pricey self publishing service but lulu provides the same service for a lot less money.
Alan (having worked in the book business all my life, and constantly fielding e-mails from publicists promoting actual published titles I find all this hoop-lah over a self-published title frankly ridiculous)

you have a point there. but she is HAPPY with the result. and it doesn't matter what means you've come up with. you know your ideas. you believe in them. some people buy it, some don't to hell if it is self published or not. as long as it is a good read.

she is tooting her own horn (which is ok, this is the Shameless category). but I got the distinct impression that all of the congratulations were coming from people who don't understand that she wrote something and paid a company 600--2500 dollars to "publish" it for her.
I am all for writers and I even believe that self-publishing can be useful and appropriate in some cases. but I'm not about to let someone walk around in a glow of congratulations from people who don't understand what it's really about.
and again, since it is shameless, a post on my blog from a couple of years ago explains the ins and outs of self publishing through lulu:

Congrats! Just published mine but went the self-publishing route. Will you be doing any book signings. My first one is coming up this Saturday.Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment!

Thanks everyone for your support. It means a lot. There are a few in the group that don't seem to be up for the shameless self-promotion....
I'm happy. My book is selling. I'm No. 1 on the Barnes & Noble Rising Star list and in the top 500 of Women's Biography. Tomorrow I've got a radio interview and I'm negotiating a deal for a novel. All is right with the world. -
@MyMusings
In Ottawa the capital of Canada. The location and time is on my post last week. Where is your interview? Are you going to put an audio of it on your next post! All the best! -
Kinda funny that she posts this topic ... gets a ton of congratulations ... and never comes back to say thanks or answer any of the questions.
Strange. -
Being published by Random House Inc. no more proves the worth of a book than self-publishing proves its worthlessness. What matters is what's between the covers, not who paid to put it there.

I've toyed with the idea of turning my blog into a book. And there is nothing wrong with self publishing, some very famous and successful authors started out self publishing and got picked up later. Just as some great bands you'll hear will never get a record deal, but keep playing, if you want to put it out there...let it go.
