theNibblers has given me inspiration!!! I asked the couple to name a player to research and write about on my baseball blog. They delivered with a player that hasn't played in over 15 years, Brad Komminsk.
I want to start writing a weekly "Do You remember...?" weekly column.
It would be great for people to throw out some names to me, and if I write about them, I will include a link to your blog, and thanking you in my column.
I do expect to hear from likes of Benny. Throw me a "Pumpsie Green" if you want.
I would also like to hear from people like CrotchetyOldMan,calais50, The Doc's, and greg69Sheryl, and Shiley (Shirley, it will cost you a Pepsi though).

Tony Pena? I'm all over that. I used to get in trouble with my coach for doing the splits behind home plate back in high school.
(by the way, he's the 1st base coach for the Yankees) -

You better duck!!!
Nah, I was always a HoJo fan...good to see he is still coaching for the Mets.
Just thought of one myself...Tim Teufel "Shuffle" -
that would be Willie "E.T." McGee
and how about a "happy" entry.I could write about Donnie Moore!
(I'm going to hell for that one.) -

I don't blame you
You need a Manny Sanguillen and Willie Stargell in there and maybe even a Dave Parker... -
Marvelous Marv Throneberry and Mookie Wilson.
Surprised Benny isn't showing a little more hometown love. -
-
Here you go Joe...and Benny...Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd. Yeah, he was a Bosox, but what a GREAT baseball name.

I "play" in a simulation for baseball (nostalgiabaseball.net) and I run across players in their drafts that always make me wonder. Being a huge Baltimore Orioles fan, I've had such wonders as Brooks Robinson, Mike Flanagan and Brady Anderson from the recent past. There were so many that I can't name them all.

No...I know what Boog is doing these days...I ate his barbecue on my most recent visit to Camden. (Albeit almost 14 years ago, but still).
Boog is only the greatest because he still puts food in the stands...Cal's the greatest, but there have been so many. I could list O's forever...
Tippy Martinez, Ken Singleton, Eddie Murray....how about manager Joe Altobelli.

Boog had the greatest nickname. Guy could go 0-fer, and it sounded like he was getting cheered.
By the way, Joaquin Andujar ranked up almost near Yogi in wacky quotes. If he were a better player, he would be remembered for them. One of my favorites: There is ONE word in America that says it all, and that one word is, 'You never know.' -
-
I loved watching Andujar play when he was the Cards. Off his rocker? yes. Because he was high on coke? probably. But he always gave 100%. He LOVED to play.
(By the way, I have a friend who bought his house from him in the mid-eighties. They had the house swept for drugs after the husband found a bag of blow in the ceiling light fixture when he went to replace it about five years later. -

I had Brad Komminsk cards!
Some of my favorites from previous years:
-Cal Ripken Jr. - first and foremost my favorite
- Jose Cruz (not his son, I'm talking the father that played for the Astros)- was the most unsung right fielder in the game for years.
- Steve Jeltz - "the jet" - I remember getting strangled by a 5th grader when I was in 3rd grade for mocking "the jet's" .195 batting avg.
- Steve Finley, Pete Harnisch, and Curt Schilling - somehow my beloved Orioles saw fit to trade all 3 stars for one washed up Astros 1st basemen - Glen Davis- who promptly got beat up by a bouncer at a night club.
- Ron Hassey/Chris Bando - backup catchers for the Indians circa 1982 - 1985
- Johnny Ray - ex 2nd baseman of the 80's Pirates
- Vince Coleman ("look out for the tarp machine!")
- Dan Gladden - remember him and his mullet?
- "Shake and" Bake McBride - best Afro of the 70's!
- Jeff Ballard - LHP for the '89 Orioles. I met him at the Baltimore Zoo when I was 10 after the horrid '88 season (O's started out 0-21 on the year). Got his autograph - then he went on to win 18 games in '89 in the Oriole's near-Cinderella run for the title.
- Clint Hurdle - the homerun god of "baseball card baseball" - a game we used to play with cards, dice, and paper bases. -
Okay, since there are actually some other O's fans here (thought I was the only one left in the world), Here's my all-time O's lineup:
LF: Frank Robinson
CF: either Paul Blair or Al Bumbry
RF: Brady Anderson
1B: Eddie Murray (with all due respect to the Boog)
2B: Roberto Alomar
SS: Cal
3B: Brooksie
C: (shocked pick) Gus Triandos - although my wife has a Chris Hoiles fetish
DH: The Boog (Ken Singleton would be my second choice)
SP: Palmer, McGreggor, Flannigan - basically our rotation from the late 70's/early 80's
Bullpen: Tippy Martinez, T.Stoddard, D.Stanhouse, S.Stewart
Coincidentally, for all you O's fans, these are some hysterical posts from one of my favorite blogs about some of the players mentioned above:

I still remember Tito Landrum's homer in the '83 ALCS.
That and my father (a Phillies fan) cursing about what a bum Joe Morgan was for falling down on the basepaths in game 2 of the '83 WS. I spent most of my childhood thinking Morgan was some bum that nobody would want (I was 5 in 1983). Little did I know he was a Hall of Famer.
Other great memories:
-Phil Bradley hitting the 1st pitch of the end-of-season showdown with the Blue Jays in 1989 out of the park. I cried my eyes out when they beat us in extra innings. I've hated the blue jays ever since.
-Mike Mussina getting drilled in the face
-Sam Horn going yard 3 times on opening day 1991.
-That bastard yankees fan that interfered with Tony Tarasco in game 2 of the '96 ALCS. We were on a roll until that moment.
-sneaking into Camden Yards for Cal's 2131 game. Then seeing his homer - unreal.
- copying Randy Milligan's batting stance. I don't know what it was about him - that guy was my idol for about 2 years there.

I've been a Cards fan too, since I lived in the midwest many years ago. But if it all comes down, I'm a bird man.
Its not the access to games, its the lack of discussion with audible others to decry or rejoice in the O's latest events. I'm just so darned isolated here in my little cave of anonymity. -
also had the last 25 game winner if I'm not mistaken - Steve Stone with his 25 wins in 1980.
That same 1980 team won over 100 games and didn't make the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Astros and the Phillies met in the NLCS that same year, and if I'm not mistaken either Jose Cruz or Cesar Cedeno led the Astros with 15 home runs that year. What a different era.

I am within an hour or so of tons of minor league teams (Surf, Jackals, Bears, Patriots, Thunder, Blue Claws, plus a few more I forgot) 2 major league teams, and the Mets.
-
I should also point out that my father's best friend growing up was John Matlock - who picthed into the 80's with the Mets and Rangers. He was from West Chester, PA.
Also got to meet a utility player with one of the best names in baseball history: John Wockenfuss. He retired to Elkton, MD after his playing days. -
Mark "the bird" Fidrych, he was my first kiss,,,,,I was 8 he was twenty something, lol it was a kiss on the cheek but I was in loveeeeeeee and he had a remarkable rookie year then tragedy, sigh
-
Here is an "oldie" for you, well not too old. I graduated from same high school (old BHS), same year, same class. Do you Remember.... Randy Hundley?
Of course you do. -
