theNibblers has given me inspiration!!! I asked the couple to name a player to research and write about on my baseball blog. They delivered with a player that hasn't played in over 15 years, Brad Komminsk.

I want to start writing a weekly "Do You remember...?" weekly column.

It would be great for people to throw out some names to me, and if I write about them, I will include a link to your blog, and thanking you in my column.

I do expect to hear from likes of Benny. Throw me a "Pumpsie Green" if you want.

I would also like to hear from people like CrotchetyOldMan,calais50, The Doc's, and greg69Sheryl, and Shiley (Shirley, it will cost you a Pepsi though).

Is Tony Pena still in baseball? It's been a while I live in WV and I am seriously deprived right now. But I was there for the playoffs and I saw that grand slam! So He's coaching for the Yankees I guess I've got some research to do then.
    3. BennyGreenberg

  3. RTBjr73
Tony Pena? I'm all over that. I used to get in trouble with my coach for doing the splits behind home plate back in high school.

(by the way, he's the 1st base coach for the Yankees)

Benny, I see your Craig Swan, and raise you Oddibe McDowell
  13. BennyGreenberg
Oddibe McDowell is a good one...

But - How about I toss Lee Lacy into the pile
    1. kdawg68
niced 80's Texas Rangers outfielder reference!

IIRC he patrolled the outfield with Larry Parrish and a young Reuben Sierra.
  14. RTBjr73
then I have to Kent Tekulve...I'm seeing yellow stars on a black hat for some reason.
  15. BennyGreenberg
    I don't blame you
You need a Manny Sanguillen and Willie Stargell in there and maybe even a Dave Parker...
    1. RTBjr73
      Tim Foli and John Candelaria
  16. sunwest
Since you brought up the Pirates, how about Ralph Kiner and Wally Westlake?
  17. sunwest
You mentioned the Negro leagues, how about Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell?
  18. CrotchetyOldMan
Marvelous Marv Throneberry and Mookie Wilson.

Surprised Benny isn't showing a little more hometown love.
    1. RTBjr73
Benny, you just got called on...and rightly so...how COULD you miss Mookie?
    2. BennyGreenberg
Hey I gave you George "the stork" Theodore in the first one...
  19. CrotchetyOldMan
You could do a doctor theme

Doc Medich, Doctor Bobby Brown, and Dock Ellis.
    1. BennyGreenberg
      Doc Gooden
    2. RTBjr73
      Doc Gooden = Lord Charles.

Wait I could write about Gooden, Hernandez, and straw...call the article "The cocaine connection".

That "C" on Keith's jersey stood for "Captain Coke", right?
    3. BennyGreenberg
      Cardinal Killer actually
    4. RTBjr73
      THAT'S what is was...dadburnit!!!!
  20. BennyGreenberg
You need Choo Choo Coleman too?
  21. RTBjr73
Here you go Joe...and Benny...Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd. Yeah, he was a Bosox, but what a GREAT baseball name.
    1. BennyGreenberg
      Virgil "Fire" Trucks...

      One from the OldMans days?
  22. CrotchetyOldMan
Who was the guy on the Cards who went catatonic during the Series? He would be great.
    1. BennyGreenberg
Rick I am now an outfielder Ankiel
    2. RTBjr73
Hey...lol...I'll take him over Beltran right now....

      "Don't be hatin"
  23. CrotchetyOldMan
Just so youse know, I'm really not 108.
    1. RTBjr73
I was about to ask you what is what like to see Murderer's row in their prime...
  24. CrotchetyOldMan
You're killing me. My avatar is me. They didn't have TVs back then.
    1. RTBjr73
      That IS a great avatar.

But we both know that AM Radio is the way to go for baseball.
    2. BennyGreenberg
      with a pillow speaker
  25. CrotchetyOldMan
Nothing like listening to a game broadcast by the Scooter on the radio.
    1. BennyGreenberg
      damn Yankee fans
  26. CrotchetyOldMan
    Yer just jealous.
  27. RTBjr73
I still listen to Mike Shannon doing the Cardinals game on a transistor radio, that's older than me, out in my garage. My kids look at the knobs on it in awe...lol
  28. wolfcreek
I "play" in a simulation for baseball (nostalgiabaseball.net) and I run across players in their drafts that always make me wonder. Being a huge Baltimore Orioles fan, I've had such wonders as Brooks Robinson, Mike Flanagan and Brady Anderson from the recent past. There were so many that I can't name them all.
    1. RTBjr73
AHHH, you can ALWAYS depend on wolfcreek...but how come you didn't say such superstars like, oh I don't know....Len Sakata?
    2. wolfcreek
Well, I could ramble on and on, RTB...I have players from all over to be concerned with...Reb Russell (now that's way back), or Cass Michaels at the 2bag back in the 40's...maybe even Mark Fidrych of the Detroit Tigers?

I can go on and on...but that ought to keep you busy.
    3. RTBjr73
Reb Russell and Cass Michaels are just as wanted by me as the new generations. If you don't mind, I will add those two to the list also.
    4. wolfcreek
      I've no issue with that...
    5. kdawg68
      diehard O's fan myself!
  29. CrotchetyOldMan
Wolf, you left out the greatest Oriole of them all, Boog.
    1. RTBjr73
oh dang, Yankee Joe just called you out!!!
    2. wolfcreek
No...I know what Boog is doing these days...I ate his barbecue on my most recent visit to Camden. (Albeit almost 14 years ago, but still).

Boog is only the greatest because he still puts food in the stands...Cal's the greatest, but there have been so many. I could list O's forever...

Tippy Martinez, Ken Singleton, Eddie Murray....how about manager Joe Altobelli.
  30. CrotchetyOldMan
Boog had the greatest nickname. Guy could go 0-fer, and it sounded like he was getting cheered.

By the way, Joaquin Andujar ranked up almost near Yogi in wacky quotes. If he were a better player, he would be remembered for them. One of my favorites: There is ONE word in America that says it all, and that one word is, 'You never know.'
  31. CrotchetyOldMan
Greatest O was either F. Robbie or Cal, just kidding about the Boog man. I just always liked him.
    1. wolfcreek
Oh, he's close to my heart....don't worry...and yes, I agree with you on Andujar. He said off the wall material, AND had a way out there accent. That's two timing it C.O.M.
    2. RTBjr73
I loved watching Andujar play when he was the Cards. Off his rocker? yes. Because he was high on coke? probably. But he always gave 100%. He LOVED to play.

(By the way, I have a friend who bought his house from him in the mid-eighties. They had the house swept for drugs after the husband found a bag of blow in the ceiling light fixture when he went to replace it about five years later.

    4. wolfcreek
Color me not surprised by the sweep.
  32. kdawg68
    I had Brad Komminsk cards!

Some of my favorites from previous years:

-Cal Ripken Jr. - first and foremost my favorite
    - Jose Cruz (not his son, I'm talking the father that played for the Astros)- was the most unsung right fielder in the game for years.
    - Steve Jeltz - "the jet" - I remember getting strangled by a 5th grader when I was in 3rd grade for mocking "the jet's" .195 batting avg.
    - Steve Finley, Pete Harnisch, and Curt Schilling - somehow my beloved Orioles saw fit to trade all 3 stars for one washed up Astros 1st basemen - Glen Davis- who promptly got beat up by a bouncer at a night club.
    - Ron Hassey/Chris Bando - backup catchers for the Indians circa 1982 - 1985
    - Johnny Ray - ex 2nd baseman of the 80's Pirates
    - Vince Coleman ("look out for the tarp machine!")
    - Dan Gladden - remember him and his mullet?
    - "Shake and" Bake McBride - best Afro of the 70's!
    - Jeff Ballard - LHP for the '89 Orioles. I met him at the Baltimore Zoo when I was 10 after the horrid '88 season (O's started out 0-21 on the year). Got his autograph - then he went on to win 18 games in '89 in the Oriole's near-Cinderella run for the title.
    - Clint Hurdle - the homerun god of "baseball card baseball" - a game we used to play with cards, dice, and paper bases.
    1. RTBjr73
@kdawg68 you are bringing a tear to my ear, going down memory lane!!!!
    2. wolfcreek
I knew I liked the Equine types!
    3. wolfcreek
      Baseball cards...now there's something I miss...
  33. BennyGreenberg
clint hurdle is cool - he lives here near where I am
  34. kdawg68
Okay, since there are actually some other O's fans here (thought I was the only one left in the world), Here's my all-time O's lineup:

    LF: Frank Robinson
CF: either Paul Blair or Al Bumbry
    RF: Brady Anderson
1B: Eddie Murray (with all due respect to the Boog)
    2B: Roberto Alomar
    SS: Cal
    3B: Brooksie
C: (shocked pick) Gus Triandos - although my wife has a Chris Hoiles fetish
DH: The Boog (Ken Singleton would be my second choice)

SP: Palmer, McGreggor, Flannigan - basically our rotation from the late 70's/early 80's
    Bullpen: Tippy Martinez, T.Stoddard, D.Stanhouse, S.Stewart

Coincidentally, for all you O's fans, these are some hysterical posts from one of my favorite blogs about some of the players mentioned above:

    cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/609704.html (Rich Dauer)
    cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/609854.html (Sammy Stewart)
    cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/902974.html (Al Bumbry)
    cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/863775.html (Tippy Martinez)
    cardboardgods.baseballtoaster.com/archives/609840.html (Mark Belanger)

    1. wolfcreek
I had a Paul Blair mitt as a kid...thought I was the shiz-nit in the midst of all the fairweather Yankee fans in my 'hood.
    2. kdawg68
I still remember Tito Landrum's homer in the '83 ALCS.

That and my father (a Phillies fan) cursing about what a bum Joe Morgan was for falling down on the basepaths in game 2 of the '83 WS. I spent most of my childhood thinking Morgan was some bum that nobody would want (I was 5 in 1983). Little did I know he was a Hall of Famer.

      Other great memories:
-Phil Bradley hitting the 1st pitch of the end-of-season showdown with the Blue Jays in 1989 out of the park. I cried my eyes out when they beat us in extra innings. I've hated the blue jays ever since.

-Mike Mussina getting drilled in the face

-Sam Horn going yard 3 times on opening day 1991.

-That bastard yankees fan that interfered with Tony Tarasco in game 2 of the '96 ALCS. We were on a roll until that moment.

-sneaking into Camden Yards for Cal's 2131 game. Then seeing his homer - unreal.

      - copying Randy Milligan's batting stance. I don't know what it was about him - that guy was my idol for about 2 years there.
    3. wolfcreek
I picked up Joe Altobelli's name because my dad shared lockers with him back in Detroit as a high schooler...good guy, too.
  35. RTBjr73
If I am not mistaken, The O's are the last team to have 4 20 game winners in the same year?
    1. wolfcreek
Yes...and I miss a team that would compete in the league all year, whether they won the division or not.

Hell, I'd even take another 0 for start just to get some press time here in West Texas...Rangers and Astros seem to be the only teams left in MLB according to our press.
    2. RTBjr73
      How west are you?

You have the mighty El Paso Diablos?

Don't hit me, please, I bruise.
    3. CrotchetyOldMan
And I could name them without looking it up.

      Palmer, Cuellar, McNally, and Dobson.
    4. RTBjr73
      NICE Mitch!!!!!!!

      Thank you.
    5. wolfcreek
I'm in the home of the former terrors of single A ball...the Lubbock Crickets.
    6. RTBjr73
      Dang!!!

time for you to get the baseball ticket on Satelite.

Here in St. Louis, we have the Cards, and two independent minor league teams in a 50 mile radius.

But I grew up in San Antonio, So I grew up with Double A baseball.
    7. wolfcreek
I've been a Cards fan too, since I lived in the midwest many years ago. But if it all comes down, I'm a bird man.

Its not the access to games, its the lack of discussion with audible others to decry or rejoice in the O's latest events. I'm just so darned isolated here in my little cave of anonymity.
    8. RTBjr73
      Wolf...you need a group hug.
    9. wolfcreek
      That ain't all brother...I'm so lacking...can I complain a bit? Well, I won't...so there.
    10. kdawg68
also had the last 25 game winner if I'm not mistaken - Steve Stone with his 25 wins in 1980.

That same 1980 team won over 100 games and didn't make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Astros and the Phillies met in the NLCS that same year, and if I'm not mistaken either Jose Cruz or Cesar Cedeno led the Astros with 15 home runs that year. What a different era.
  36. mitch972
    Kirby Pucket!
    Andre Dawson
    Nolan Ryan
    Ryan Sanburg

    there's 4
    1. wolfcreek
I can still remember wanting to get my Expo's replica batting helmet...How cool were they?
  37. CrotchetyOldMan
I am within an hour or so of tons of minor league teams (Surf, Jackals, Bears, Patriots, Thunder, Blue Claws, plus a few more I forgot) 2 major league teams, and the Mets.
    1. BennyGreenberg
Hey man - I live in the Spring Training Capital!!! And the Florida state league is my neighborhood!
  38. kdawg68
    What about the 82 Brewers?

    Paul Molitor
    Cecil Cooper
    Ben Oglive
    Ted Simmons
    Robin Yount

Little known fact - remmeber that Charlie Sheen/Tom Berenger baseball comedy "Major League" - the guy that plays the Yankees Slugger "Hayward" is actually the Brewers 1982 Cy-Young winner - Pete Vukovich.
  39. kdawg68
I should also point out that my father's best friend growing up was John Matlock - who picthed into the 80's with the Mets and Rangers. He was from West Chester, PA.

Also got to meet a utility player with one of the best names in baseball history: John Wockenfuss. He retired to Elkton, MD after his playing days.
    1. wolfcreek
I remember Wockenfuss from his days with the Royals...

Cards v. Royals in the WS...now those are days gone by. Small market teams just don't have much of a chance now.
    2. BennyGreenberg
don't tell that to the multiple championship winning marlins
    3. wolfcreek
True...but that's the National League...the Twins are the last ones from the AL that I remember.
  40. kat822
Mark "the bird" Fidrych, he was my first kiss,,,,,I was 8 he was twenty something, lol it was a kiss on the cheek but I was in loveeeeeeee and he had a remarkable rookie year then tragedy, sigh
    1. wolfcreek
He was a nut, but man I liked to watch him pitch, Kat.
    2. BennyGreenberg
and what about Mitch - wild thing - Williams
    3. wolfcreek
Mitch was a rip off artist?

What was it...The Raging Hungarian...Hrabowski? I forget his name, now. He was at least a foreign flavor for the crazy one.
    4. RTBjr73
It was the Mad Hungarian...he still does old timer's games with a bog ole' fake mustache
  41. kat822
wolf creek yes he was CRAYCE!!! what can I say I was attacted to the crazy ones early on lol

@ Benny not sure who Mitch was have to google him lol
  42. craftymug
Here is an "oldie" for you, well not too old. I graduated from same high school (old BHS), same year, same class. Do you Remember.... Randy Hundley?
    Of course you do.
    1. kdawg68
gold glove winning catcher for the Cubs from the 60's if my baseball knowledge is correct.
    2. RTBjr73
      Randy Hundley...now THAT'S a name we can....oh heck, I'm speechless!!
    3. craftymug
I'm not a real baseball or sports type fan and I didn't keep up with Randy's career, but isn't he still around doing some announcing?
    4. RTBjr73
Well, heck craftymug, I just might have to research him and write about it. I might have to also put your link on the article to show thanks for the idea.

      ;-)
    5. craftymug
Great RTB! I'll be interested in reading your blog about Randy. Well, I'll read your blog anyway!
    6. BennyGreenberg
Daddy of Todd - I stay out too late - get drunk - and ruined my career Hundley
  43. shagnast2100
what about daren bragg...I actually played against him like 2 years ago in a league in CT still a fantastic ball player
    1. RTBjr73
I like that! You still play? So do I. The only claim to "fame" players, is a guy on our team that pitches for division I ball... He keeps me on my toes behind the plate, for he is still bringing the heat. Last year he got clocked at 89 mph. Not bad for a guy who is 39 years old.
    2. BennyGreenberg
      Pete Falcone -
      John Franco
      Lee Mazzilli

      the Brooklyn Boys...
    3. shagnast2100
Yea he was a really nice guy too. He still has all his fundamentals and can swing like he was 20 still. He is a true lover of the game. Definitely a person worth looking into.
    4. RTBjr73
      I will. Thanks buddy
  44. BennyGreenberg
what no women - league of their own ladies?
  45. RTBjr73
I haven't received any Negro League ballplayers names either, which does disappoint me.
    1. sunwest
I gave you Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell yesterday and you ignored it.
    2. RTBjr73
Sorry Sunwest, I was away from computer last night and just logged back in.
    1. RTBjr73
too easy!!! I expect better from you
    2. BennyGreenberg
I happen to work with Ray Schulte - Who works with Ripken, Mattingly, Clemente and Gibson - so it popped in my head
    3. RTBjr73
      ok, you are forgiven...this time
    4. BennyGreenberg
      I feel better now
  46. WilDip
    Roberto Clemente.
  47. BennyGreenberg
    Cool Papa Bell
    1. RTBjr73
much better...5 gold stars for Benny...or at least a higher ranking on BC. (yes, I went there)
  48. pointlessbanter
    Buck O'Neil
    Thurman Munson
Curt Flood (the book about him released two years ago was awesome)
    1. RTBjr73
nice choices!! Thanks PB!!! and screw that guy on you thread that you have going, what he said was uncalled for
    2. BennyGreenberg
I like the Curt Flood Angle... it changed Baseball

      Caludell Washington...
