Arizona State University decided to not give President Obama an honorary degree when he gives the commencement speach next month.

University spokeswoman Sharon Keeler told The Associated Press on Wednesday that ASU's practice was to give honorary degrees to people who had a body of work and had been in their positions for a long time. "His body of work is yet to come. That's why we're not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency," Keeler said.

Because of the backlash, the University has decided, instead, to name a scholarship for him.

Do you agree with their stance on not giving Obama an honorary degree, or do you think it's disrespectful, etc.? Your thoughts...

Wait, so now you can get an associates, bachelors, masters, doctorate, and Obama?

What an embarrassment to change their minds. I always thought giving an honorary degree to someone was the college's way to suck up/associate themselves with someone famous. Whether or not they give the degree to him really doesn't change anything for them or for Obama anyway. So, who cares?

Pathetic, especially when you look at the list of people they've given honorary degrees to in the past. I hope he doesn't shed too many tears on his Harvard Law diploma over this whole thing.

Which past honorary degree awards by ASU do you object to?

He was President of his Harvard Senior class. With a degree from Harvard in his back pocket, ASU is the one left looking stupid.
ASU should be grateful and appreciative of Pres. Obama. I think by the time next fall semester rolls around, ASU will be wishing they handled things a little differently.

I think it's disrespectful. He should call in sick that day. He went to Harvard and he got elected PRESIDENT. Hello?!

It is entirely up to ASU to whom they may award an Honorary Degree.

Considering the fact that ASU has never awarded an Honorary Degree to any serving, or past, President of the USA polybore can't really see what the fuss is about.

Naming a scholarship after Obama seems entirely appropriate.

I agree 100%, I see no reason to put up a fuss over it.

More power to em, a scholarship is more productive than an honary degree, then again he might need it to fall back on in a few years lol
