I have just made friends with theincometeam's and visited his blog whereby he has recently changed to "Do follow", which is something that I was considering - what do others do on their blogs and has anyone got any views and opinions on this subject?
Cheers, Russell

The Alexa rank on my blog is currently 74,012 which is not bad for a blog. It has risen a little in the last few weeks due to my lack of posting (I was in Hawaii and couldn't pull myself away from the fun) -- was in the high 60Ks for a short period. It is going to drop again now that I'm back workin' it.

I think "do follow", because if you don't then it would be difficult for people who wants to follow, and less people want to comment in your blog hoping feedback from it...

Dear sir,
You have a great business (aimed) blog, and I think its your own domain. I don't know how long you have been blogging. But you need some Basic essential SEO setup and design if you want a blogging business.
I saw your Link for sale for business owner, But your Ugly permalinks tells it all about your blog. Give title and alt text attributes to your images.
These are some basic things that say something about a site and their business.
Hope you will look into the matter -
I looked into this at Blogger (where my blog is located), and there's no setting to select do follow or no follow. Everything is no follow by default. Just a heads-up for people using Blogger...I'm new to the whole no/do follow idea, and I can't say I have a strong opinion on it (yet).
Edit: I just found this page that explains how to edit your BLogger template (new style) to remove the no follow rule: webstractions.blogspot.com/2007/05/removing-nofollow-from-blogger-styled.ht... .-
You have to go to "edit HTML", and delete the rel='nofollow' from your template. There should be 3 places where it shows up.
Explained here - www.bloggerplugins.org/2007/08/u-comment-i-follow.html
-
When you make your blog dofollow, it encourages people to come to your blog and leave more comments. It give them a URL to their blog, which Google will follow when it scans your site, helping to raise their pagerank.

mine are 'dofollow' so that if people comment on my site, they later see a link back to their site. I wish we lived in a 'dofollow' world.
-
Well I have now done this too - my blog is a "Do Follow" blog and I have posted information on this here: www.in-business.org.uk/?p=1134
So please feel free to stop by and post your comments, they will be appreciated and you will get a Google recognised link-back-
Hope you now understand about the permalinks I had PM you back
Check which is better:

My blog is a do follow blog. I believe in rewarding subscribers that come to my blog and post...
I also look for blogs who uses "dofollow"
The only downside is it also increases spam post.. -
Nofollow was invented by Google as a way of avoiding passing PageRank to pages you were unsure of. Linking to so called "bad neighbourhoods" ie. spam sites etc. is not good for any site.
So, why would you be linking to pages you were unsure of? The answer is you wouldn't, but people (spammers) posting comments on your blog will.
The answer is, make your blog comment links nofollow if you don't edit the comments before they are published. If you do then do follow.-
Thank you for your comments - I don't agree with you though, if you have a spam filter like Askimet, this filters most spam and then you can either have a captcha to help avoid bot spam and then the final check is to approve all comments, and those that look dodgy or not relevant to your blog can easily be removed.
As Livefree has just said it is good to reward "good" commentors to your blog and it encourages people to visit you so you get traffic, afterall it is not all about Googles pagerank, pagerank in itself does not equate to traffic! -
What you describe as approving is what I'm talking about when I said "editing".
If you are manually approving the comments then fine, follow. If not, nofollowing is an option to avoid linking to crap. Askimet is good but won't stop someone manually spamming you.
Of course PageRank does not equate directly to traffic but improving your search positions will bring relevant, good quality traffic to your site. Who wants traffic that's only there for a keyword rich backlink? You're looking at things in a very short term way.
I'm all for following links but promoting yourself on sites like this as someone who does is just asking to be spammed.

I have not changed my blog links to "do- follow" and do not intend to do so. The idea or rewarding people who comment on my posts with backlinks does not sit well with me. I suspect it make encourage some people to comment only for the purpose if getting the link because I have received no value and low value comments from several commercial bloggers.
Instead I use the wordpress commentluv plugin. However, when I get comments left by people using business names as their usernames (anchor text) I will check out their sites, and if their is no relationship between their blogs and the subjects I blog about then I remove their bloglinks to their usernames, and to their most recent post as generated by the commentluv plugin.
The reason why I do this is simple. I have a blog that has ZERO advertising on it. I am seeking to build a faithful readership and blog centered relationships with my readers based on organic traffic.
I have been receiving comments produced by automatic comment generating software from business people and from marketers. And I do not wish my personal blog to become a gateway to unrelated commercially focused blogs.
Therefore, I have made this "link removal" clear in my commenting policy posted on my About page. In part it states:
* Commercial links, post links, signature links, etc. : Including a link to your “personal” blog and/or website is acceptable (all usernames are linked) but all links are subject to review and may be removed prior to posting. Specifically, provided that the bloggers commenting are actually adding something to the discussion I do not remove their links. However, if I believe that they are just link dropping in an attempt to divert readers to their own blog post(s) or to game search engine results then I do not feel the same way. I delete the links. Example: Anchor text - If a keyword is entered into the name field rather than a name I will either break the link and post the comment or I will delete the comment.-

You're welcome and 'yes' indeed I do have strong POV on this ... lol
... and, on almost everything based on my experience in the blogosphere, which is now currently crawling with commercial opportunists that I do not want to create relationships with.
I moderate all comments BTW. And my blog is also set so that more than 2 links in any comments received sends the comment automatically to my Defensio spam filter. We can vary that setting on wordpress blogs by inserting the number of links we choose to allow in comments. The default setting is 2 links. -

Do be aware that I'm a straight shooter and there are legions out there working all the angles, who will NOT concur with my viewpoints.
IMO all newbies ought to learn how to blog straight up first, build a reader and search engine friendly blog, blog and network effectively and attract organic traffic. Then, if they so choose, they can work the angles (rewards, bribes, contests, yada, yada, yada) because they will have a clear understanding of exactly what they are doing, as well as, the impacts and the consequences of choosing to work angles.
Things move so fast in cyberspace and now that $$$$$$$ are very much the motivator for many bloggers, learning the basics straight up is becoming more difficult. Add to that the fact that business people and marketers are very desirous of building relationships with bloggers so they can flog their services or wares to bloggers, on their blogs, and through their blogs. So, although I'm an introvert, I have come out of the woodwork, so to speak.

My blog www.projectswole.com is a dofollow blog. Regarding a comment up above that mentions spam links in comments: I manually approve each comment that gets posted to my blog unless it was written by someone who has already been approved at least once. I only allow dofollow links in the Author section of my comments, but never in the body of the comment. Anything that looks like spam gets slapped with the spamhammer.
-
"I do have strong POV on this ... lol ... and, on almost everything based" you can say that again timethief, LOL
-
I have a "do-follow" blog. Those who take the time to write a good comment on a post will get rewarded with a link back to their site.I manually approve every comment so no spam will get through.

Make them do follow as this makes your blog user friendly but monitor your comments carefully to route out spammers!!
