No Incessant and Instantaneous Music please

Imagine this, you're in a quiet room, you forgot that you have the speakers on, you opened a blog, then BOOM! suddenly a loud music appeared out of nowhere, shocking you out of your seat.
Not that I'm against any music, I'm okay with those plugins where I can press 'play' to play. But those blogs/sites with ongoing music irritates me.
And what about the times when I AM listening to something? The background music will just be noise, interrupting and messing with what I was doing.
I mean, it's okay if you want to share with the rest of the world what kind of music you're listening to right now, but having it playing when someone is opening your blog is just... not tasteful. I think.
Anybody else agrees with me? Or any opposing opinion?

On one hand, I hate autoplay music. I want to have the option of clicking on it or not. I think it's cheeky for other bloggers to blast me with their music and if they do I click out.
On the other, if the blogger includes music and gives me an option to click or not click then I'm quite happy to remain on the blog and read and click away.
Because I'm in a bit of a mood a related pet peeve of mine comes to mind. Bloggers who set every link to open in a new window and send me sailing off their blog when I click it peeve me. I want to make my own browser choices - thanks.
(Ahhaaaa ... I feel better now. )-
timethief, the pet peeve you mention is interesting. I hate when I click a link and it DOES take me away from the blog. Especially if the link is a reference to whatever I'm reading in the post (although I guess all links should fall under this category). I like to click the link and kinda go back and forth between that and the blog posts.
But I'm not a fan of auto-play music, but oddly enough I soften up if it's a song I like.

Exactly, so for those who have autoplay music in their site, know that most, or some, or at least me and timethief, will simply click on the X button and look for some other blog to read.

I'm by no means anti-music. Music really sets a tone for appreciating what you are reading and no one other than me knows what mood I prefer to be in at any moment in time. Normally, while I'm online I'm listening to my own music. If I'm visiting a blog that has a music theme then I turn my own music off. I read the posts and click the accompanying music or video. That means that I'm making the choices, rather than having them made for me. It sounds to me like you feel the same way too. -

My blog has a large portion of music content and I am in no way tempted to deploy the auto-music devices - purely because I find them so irritating elsewhere. There are one or two blogs I tolerate where the autoplay kicks in but only because I enjoyed the blog/writing long before they added the widget. A new site with autoplay will ordinarily be closed pretty rapidly esp as I listen to music most of the time myself and the "clash" really grates.

I love music on my blog, but usually it goes with the post in some way, and is part and parcel of who I am as an artist (which seems to appeal to those interested in my work, the gallery owners that represent me and a few others whose visits are valuable to me professionally). But I understand your gripe and why you wouldn't want to waste time visiting blogs with music.
I think it makes sense to keep your speakers low to off as there are many blogs with music now.
See the bottom line is I am not creating a blog for you the viewer and the viewers convenience. My blog is a representation of who I am as an artist and I am very much an artist who creates on her own terms. It may mean less visitors BUT the one's I do get are wonderful, and they like me for who I am, warts and all. -

I actually find it fairly difficult to read a bloggers' content when there's music running as well. I need it to be pretty quiet when I read, and I fear I don't get as much out of the person's content when music is also fighting for my attention.
I understand the desire for a blogger to use music to create atmosphere, but I do personally find the music sort of intrusive.-
I suppose if the blog is just writing, but mine has the emphasis on the visual. I have had some tell me my current entry has beautiful music that goes very well with the image.

sorry melisa, but a few comments from people who have no professional interest in my work are not going to convince me. If you can show how music can hurt me professionally I might consider it, but what I am hearing at the moment is that it is just an annoyance to those who cruise unfamiliar blogs.

I love music....but not autoplay on blogs...in fact sometimes I have been known to just close them instantly if the music blares out at me. This is not to say if I went on a muical blog that I would click to hear an artist play, I would. But, I want to choose.
I wouldn't have it on my own either, if people are at work and doing a bit of surfing, the last thing they need is to click on a blog and loud music emanate from the computer, LOL -
i've had the crap scared out of me more than once. One site i visit plays garth brooks. I never expect it.

hate hate hate autoplay.
i don't mind a player on a site, but i want to control when it comes on.
as for surfing the net with the speakers off? i don't like that option at all - i'll miss some of the program cues telling me when things are done or when a program needs my attention. the sound cues do more for me than many of the visual cues. (which is weird, cuz i'm a visual person - i suppose it's because i have too many windows open and not all programs send their alert to the front) -
I did have the auto play music and it even got on my nerves lol so now if I want to add music I will probable just add a You tube video.

Aside from MySpace, instant play music has almost gone extinct.
I get it, the blog is about YOU and your personality, but playing music pushes your personality in an annoying way. What is more annoying, wearing an AC-DC t-shirt, or blasting it from your boom box?
