Hi TonyB. How about exterior links to non blog-related sites or to other discussion threads, that may liven up or inform a discussion? Does that affect a person's magic "Blog Catalog juice?" Thanks!
-
Thanks Tony,
I have a thread to help fellow blogger on their blog designs but Many use it for link dropping. I can't differentiate who really need help and my time is wasted for nothing. SO I started a new thread with some set of rules stating not to link drop. Most people followed but some people still doesn't. But the report button does the magic now. My hats off to the admins. -

@TonyB
I know this is already covered in the Read Before Posting sticky post but I'm wondering if you would consider making this post into a sticky post too. -
What is the downside of allowing these rudely posted links that nobody reads to remain ?
What actual problems are caused by leaving these usually garbage links remain in the discussion comments ? -
what is link dropping??i mean there are discussions heading "drop ur BLOG URL ill review" and/or such discussions! is it not fair to ban suc discussions ALSO than just deleteling posts of waht you call LINK DROPPERS??i mean this is purely double standards!!any one wud get tempted to drop links...specially beginners!!what say Sir?
-
Hey Tony, I vote that we collectively smite link droppers who necropost.
Can we? Can we? Pleeeeaaaase?
-
I have an honest question about reporting spammy link drops.
When someone comes in and just spams the forum relentlessly, I hit the report button - however I'm never sure if I should report every spam comment (time consuming!) and flood you guys with reports - or - if there is a better more concise way to report one person as a spammer so that you guys can deal with it faster and more effectively.
Is there a better way?-
I have that question, as well. Is there a way to report a spammer rather than the individual posts? There are times when I don't even want to open the post to report it because I can tell by the title and preview that it's spam. It's be fantastic if we could report a person's post en masse - I'd guess an e-mail to admin would do it, but if that's the way to go then could we make that link more prominent, like in the sidebar?

This is good to have this as a sticky. The read before posting is starting to slow my computer down.

I join discussions to discuss, and to see where the username takes me even if I am fighting nausia at the time. . We are not in conversation here where the odd 'yes','no' 'gruugh' can add something. Is it not possible to filter out very short answers along with the links? Well, I WOULD say that probably, but it would save everyone time and create a cleaner format for this wonderful institution.
-
It would, indubitably, be a quite practicable procedure: to, by means of applied skills and possible the use of several members of this diverse, global, community, develop a filter which would, accurately and effectively, identify and remove answers, replies, comments, or similar posts which failed to satisfy predetermined, if draconian, criteria, and thus were deemed to be unworthy of inclusion in the sort of ongoing mulitlogue of the sort which is commonly referred to as a "discussion thread" in online communities such as BlogCatalog.
-
Okay: Both of my replies, boiled down to basics, say the same thing.
Which might be considered the 'better' reply?
I vote for the shorter one.
I do see what you mean, in reference to replies which are textual grunts. But, sometimes an affirmative grunt can be significant.
And, somewhat easier to read than a treatise which means, in its essence, "I agree."

@fatx
The url for your blog is a link. That is what TonyB is referring to here. If you click this link you will find a definition www.techterms.com/definition/hyperlink

The same guidelines we have prior are still in effect. This thread just clarifies them for those who were unable to comprehend the guidelines found here Read Before Posting www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-before-posting-1
We are allowed to include a link to a post located on our site or on another site in a comment we post into a forum discussion thread, if and only if, the link is to information that directly relates to the subject matter in the thread.
We are NOT allowed to drop a signature link to our own blog into each comment we make in a discussion thread, and we are NOT allowed to resurrect old forum threads solely for the purpose of dropping our own blog link(s) AKA "signature links" into them.
If it is clear that the only reason you are doing it is to get click throughs your link will be deleted.

Sorry to say, I avoid that sort of discussion anyway: I suspect they're too diffuse to attract many visitors (to say nothing of repeat visitors); and, one bit of conventional wisdom that makes sense is that search engines tend to at best ignore - and possibly demote - pages whose URLs show up on too many of such things.
(It's sort of like 'link farming.')
No offense - the 'what did you post today' approach is also a nice community thing.
-
-
It does not work anyway. I don't think most nobody ever clicks through to links in blog comments or forums. Some may.
I think the majority of people do it just because it has something to do with the topic discussion. Sort of just trying to be helpful or write something interesting in relation to the topic.
The only way to get traffic is from Google really. -
-
..whoops, I'm guilty as charged, but only when the topic asks to drop links.
So link to specific posts in the blog to support the discussions are ok, while direct links to the blog itself are not. Thank you for clarifying this.
Is it safe to say that topics asking for link drops will be taken out too? -
-
-
@denharsh
There are old link drop threads which are being resurrected from the searchbox for link dropping purposes every day. The one in question FILIPINO? Let me read your filipino blogs! has been reported and when Admin have the time they will delete the thread.
For a description of what the OP in a Shameless Blog Promotion thread ought to contain you can check here www.blogcatalog.com/group/new-blog-catalog-users/discuss/entry/how-to-use-b...

This seems to contradict the purpose of information and free exchange in groups and I see this as censorship despite potential spammers. This is what group moderation is for to identify abusers but to completely state no links when the application software allows for it by code, and denying access to information relevant to posting kinda stinks and smells filthy, here.
-
This thread is completely useless. Me and several others have reported topics that are nothing but link spammings, they didn't get deleted.
There's no point in making a rule (Let alone into a sticky) if you're not planning to enforce it.
So, move along everyone, nothing to see here. -
-
makes sense. but too tempting to a discussion with all bloggers trying to get traffic. We cant help it.
-
@DollinNYC
Admin has requested that we all use the report button whenever we see a "questionable" link posted into a forum thread. When we do this Admin will assesses whether or not the links are directly related to the discussion, and constitute a valid contribution to the conversation in the thread or not.
When it comes to "questionable links" perhaps consulting the Read Before Posting thread will be helpful www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-before-posting-1

I think I just did that. I apologize to the group. I truly don't know all the in's and out's yet and did not know it was not permissible. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
-
Strange, then I think you should remove the "shameless blog promotion" item from the topic list....
Trust me, if I don't want to click on something, I won't, no mater how many links are added to the discussion post.
I am the master of my own time and I believe most of us are.
Cheers

Thanks for reminding me on the intent of this discussion feature. I'm not sure how to invite people to discuss our poetry if we don't visit each other's blog posts. Want to help me here?
