Hi TonyB. How about exterior links to non blog-related sites or to other discussion threads, that may liven up or inform a discussion? Does that affect a person's magic "Blog Catalog juice?" Thanks!
    1. TonyB
It's fine if you want to link to a post that supports what you are discussing. However recently it's become routine for members to drop links after each post they make. The discussions don't pass any juice anyway since we don't want members participating in the discussions just to get juice.
    2. gtally
What about a blog link in the header of the discussion, say, in "Shameless Blog Promotion" or "General Discussion?" Does this hurt your BC juice?
  2. weblogian
    Thanks Tony,

I have a thread to help fellow blogger on their blog designs but Many use it for link dropping. I can't differentiate who really need help and my time is wasted for nothing. SO I started a new thread with some set of rules stating not to link drop. Most people followed but some people still doesn't. But the report button does the magic now. My hats off to the admins.
  3. MadScientist
Wasn't this already covered in the community rules...???
    1. LolitaV
oh look there is Jimmy Neutron!
  4. HalfCrazy
Thank you very much for this.
  5. timethief
    @TonyB
I know this is already covered in the Read Before Posting sticky post but I'm wondering if you would consider making this post into a sticky post too.
    1. Norski
      What she said.
  6. OneMuslim
    Now the authority has spoken
  7. gerryPlanetEarth
What is the downside of allowing these rudely posted links that nobody reads to remain ?

What actual problems are caused by leaving these usually garbage links remain in the discussion comments ?
    1. Norski
Clutter. Noise, in the information theory sense of the word.
  8. Nomadic
Who actually clicks on link droppers?
  9. 9render5
what is link dropping??i mean there are discussions heading "drop ur BLOG URL ill review" and/or such discussions! is it not fair to ban suc discussions ALSO than just deleteling posts of waht you call LINK DROPPERS??i mean this is purely double standards!!any one wud get tempted to drop links...specially beginners!!what say Sir?
  10. Anok
Hey Tony, I vote that we collectively smite link droppers who necropost.

    Can we? Can we? Pleeeeaaaase?

    1. siralmo
      smite we shall
  11. 123davelee
yes , i agree. i have a few links on my post discussion i created that do not have anything to do with what i am talking about...
  12. Anok
I have an honest question about reporting spammy link drops.

When someone comes in and just spams the forum relentlessly, I hit the report button - however I'm never sure if I should report every spam comment (time consuming!) and flood you guys with reports - or - if there is a better more concise way to report one person as a spammer so that you guys can deal with it faster and more effectively.

    Is there a better way?
    1. legbamel
I have that question, as well. Is there a way to report a spammer rather than the individual posts? There are times when I don't even want to open the post to report it because I can tell by the title and preview that it's spam. It's be fantastic if we could report a person's post en masse - I'd guess an e-mail to admin would do it, but if that's the way to go then could we make that link more prominent, like in the sidebar?
    2. crpitt
Hey don't ruin my fun time! What else would spam boy do
  13. Shiley
This is good to have this as a sticky. The read before posting is starting to slow my computer down.
    1. timethief
I think making this a sticky post is a good idea too.
  14. SxCAINE
    Thank you.
  15. SolReka
Good idea. Link droppers should be culled :-)

Hopefully the quality of the posts should increase, as one word post replies will become a thing of the past.
  16. corfubob
I join discussions to discuss, and to see where the username takes me even if I am fighting nausia at the time. . We are not in conversation here where the odd 'yes','no' 'gruugh' can add something. Is it not possible to filter out very short answers along with the links? Well, I WOULD say that probably, but it would save everyone time and create a cleaner format for this wonderful institution.
    1. Norski
      Short-response filter? Possible.
    2. Norski
It would, indubitably, be a quite practicable procedure: to, by means of applied skills and possible the use of several members of this diverse, global, community, develop a filter which would, accurately and effectively, identify and remove answers, replies, comments, or similar posts which failed to satisfy predetermined, if draconian, criteria, and thus were deemed to be unworthy of inclusion in the sort of ongoing mulitlogue of the sort which is commonly referred to as a "discussion thread" in online communities such as BlogCatalog.
    3. Norski
Okay: Both of my replies, boiled down to basics, say the same thing.

Which might be considered the 'better' reply?

I vote for the shorter one.

I do see what you mean, in reference to replies which are textual grunts. But, sometimes an affirmative grunt can be significant.

And, somewhat easier to read than a treatise which means, in its essence, "I agree."
  17. Norski
    No link dropping.

    I can live with that.

    Thanks.
  18. FatX
    What's a link?
    1. timethief
      @fatx
The url for your blog is a link. That is what TonyB is referring to here. If you click this link you will find a definition www.techterms.com/definition/hyperlink
    2. mattiasx
I think he was being sarcastic...

Didn't have the nerve to do that, myself.

      Been nice, knowing you.
    3. timethief
      ... lol
    4. acousticguitarist
I couldn't help it, it just happened. Should we report it?
    5. mpbabaji
      Hats off
  20. lettershome
So what if you're dropping a link to a different blog, not your own? Is that OK?
    1. timethief
The same guidelines we have prior are still in effect. This thread just clarifies them for those who were unable to comprehend the guidelines found here Read Before Posting www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-before-posting-1

We are allowed to include a link to a post located on our site or on another site in a comment we post into a forum discussion thread, if and only if, the link is to information that directly relates to the subject matter in the thread.

We are NOT allowed to drop a signature link to our own blog into each comment we make in a discussion thread, and we are NOT allowed to resurrect old forum threads solely for the purpose of dropping our own blog link(s) AKA "signature links" into them.

If it is clear that the only reason you are doing it is to get click throughs your link will be deleted.
    2. barryfromtexas
Isn't what TT did link dropping?
  21. Shuttercraft
lol this is why my "what did you post today discussion" is gone...
    1. Norski
Sorry to say, I avoid that sort of discussion anyway: I suspect they're too diffuse to attract many visitors (to say nothing of repeat visitors); and, one bit of conventional wisdom that makes sense is that search engines tend to at best ignore - and possibly demote - pages whose URLs show up on too many of such things.

(It's sort of like 'link farming.')

No offense - the 'what did you post today' approach is also a nice community thing.
    2. HalfCrazy
Yes, it is a nice approach but some of the people are too selfish.
    3. Epicharis
I don't know if it's amusing or depressing that this was unintentional irony...
    4. timethief
Unbelievable things like this link drop into a no link dropping thread are crazymaking acts, for sure.
  22. mikeny07
It does not work anyway. I don't think most nobody ever clicks through to links in blog comments or forums. Some may.

I think the majority of people do it just because it has something to do with the topic discussion. Sort of just trying to be helpful or write something interesting in relation to the topic.

The only way to get traffic is from Google really.
  23. kat822
    thanks tony
  24. nikshufrey
    Thanks TonyB.
  25. Friday13
Oh, no! What ever will the link droppers do?

So many layoffs these days ...
  26. nanaoise
..whoops, I'm guilty as charged, but only when the topic asks to drop links.

So link to specific posts in the blog to support the discussions are ok, while direct links to the blog itself are not. Thank you for clarifying this.

Is it safe to say that topics asking for link drops will be taken out too?
    1. timethief
Is it safe to say that topics asking for link drops will be taken out too?

Report these kinds of threads by clicking the "Report This Topic" link in the OP and that will bring them to the attention of Admin.
    2. nanaoise
      Thanks Time Thief! Sorry for being a n00b ._.;;;
    3. timethief
      @nanaoise
Hey, no problem. We all have to start somewhere, and what's not to like about another knitter & crocheter? I'm going to try that doll pattern too.
    4. nanaoise
*thinks this is totally hijacking the thread but*

w00t~ \o/ You crochet too!!! xD I'm officially grabbing your RSS feeds, right now! x3
    5. timethief
      @nanaoise
      off-topic
I don't have anything about knitting or crochet in my blogs but "yes" I'm into both.
I especially like making tiny soft toys.
    6. nanaoise
      @TimeThief:

No worries. I've just started crocheting again after a long time. It's the first time I found out that you can crochet other stuff aside from lace. :3

Well, if you feel like blogging about them one day, I'd love to see what you have.
  27. dosox
LOL Tony... I hate to see those blue color thing.
  28. gosmelltheflowers
@ Tony - so no more free flowers contests then?
  29. Arcticulates
hmmm... When TonyB puts up a discussion sticky with bold letters we had better pay attention.
  30. robinj
I have nothing to say but was feeling left out :o(
  31. denharsh
Wat about the thread in shameless blog promotion?>??
    1. timethief
      @denharsh
There are old link drop threads which are being resurrected from the searchbox for link dropping purposes every day. The one in question FILIPINO? Let me read your filipino blogs! has been reported and when Admin have the time they will delete the thread.

For a description of what the OP in a Shameless Blog Promotion thread ought to contain you can check here www.blogcatalog.com/group/new-blog-catalog-users/discuss/entry/how-to-use-b...
  32. buyersweb
I get the reason for spam linking restrictions, you mean comments that are just links hey, not comments with related post links in it..?
    Can someone clarify?
  33. Bharatheeyam
    very good direction
  34. AnEnglishManAbroad
This is great relief for me as I didn't know how to do it anway.
  35. rippinkitten
    SMACKDOWN.

    I love it.
  36. tikitoons
This seems to contradict the purpose of information and free exchange in groups and I see this as censorship despite potential spammers. This is what group moderation is for to identify abusers but to completely state no links when the application software allows for it by code, and denying access to information relevant to posting kinda stinks and smells filthy, here.
    1. HalfCrazy
Just how will you feel like when someone posts their blog links, which are not relevant, in a topic you created? Or they do a one-liner comment about the topic like "I agree." then leaving links to their blog?
    2. TonyB
It does not say NO links. It says link dropping for the sole purpose of the link. The purpose of the Discussion is to foster an area for discussions not for links. If you want to drop your links do a search on google for link exchanges.
    3. tikitoons
hey there: thanks for clearing up some of the confusion I had over this debate. Am happy for moderation occurring among the posts and preventing spam. You made a believer out of me and made my day.
  37. riverstyxxx
This thread is completely useless. Me and several others have reported topics that are nothing but link spammings, they didn't get deleted.

There's no point in making a rule (Let alone into a sticky) if you're not planning to enforce it.

So, move along everyone, nothing to see here.
    1. dosox
      LOL keep reporting
    1. PetLvr
I didn't report you - I reported your thread - for dropping an affiliate link on your chat to text post. Did you not read this post you are complaining on? That's why it was deleted.
  38. voodooKobra
Tony, I'd like to concur with the idea mentioned above: Allow users to report the spammers as well as just spam comments.
  39. davidrosen
makes sense. but too tempting to a discussion with all bloggers trying to get traffic. We cant help it.
    1. dinsquared
Dude, we all want traffic. That's what Shameless Blog Promotion is for; there's a time and a place.
    2. DollinNYC
There are people on here who seem to find a way to relate the discussion to their blogs and then drop a link. Dropping links on a site full of bloggers is
      unimaginative and tiresome.
    3. timethief
      @DollinNYC
Admin has requested that we all use the report button whenever we see a "questionable" link posted into a forum thread. When we do this Admin will assesses whether or not the links are directly related to the discussion, and constitute a valid contribution to the conversation in the thread or not.

When it comes to "questionable links" perhaps consulting the Read Before Posting thread will be helpful www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-before-posting-1
  40. ttiger
so if i change all the design and need some comment what should i do to get some feedback??
    1. ruphestimate
      nothing..
    2. HalfCrazy
      Shameless Blog Promotion.
  41. leeconrey
I think I just did that. I apologize to the group. I truly don't know all the in's and out's yet and did not know it was not permissible. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
    1. HalfCrazy
At least you know what you did lol! Some don't even read the topic and just post their links!
  42. ophase
Hi Tony, I wonder if it is possible to add a poll component option for each threads.
You know sometimes Bloggers need to do community searches before writing a new post. I think it would be helpful.
  43. n4sh
    correct! agree! hehehe
  44. mpbabaji
    It's no way a Spam.
Even directories ask for a Link back. Isn't it ?
  45. Wolfbernz
I think your dog needs a new flea collar he is always scratching...LOL
  46. 22050hz
Strange, then I think you should remove the "shameless blog promotion" item from the topic list....
Trust me, if I don't want to click on something, I won't, no mater how many links are added to the discussion post.
I am the master of my own time and I believe most of us are.

    Cheers

    C.
    1. Wolfbernz
I have to agree, the first time I saw shameless blog promotion I assumed it was to promote my blog and leave a link to it!
Now about that flea collar, I think orange would be nice... hehehehe
  47. JerryRONeill
Thanks for reminding me on the intent of this discussion feature. I'm not sure how to invite people to discuss our poetry if we don't visit each other's blog posts. Want to help me here?
    1. legbamel
There's no reason you can't include a link as a part of a larger discussion, as long as that link is relevant and your post is intended as part of a discussion rather than grabbing an opportunity to insert your link without contributing to the community.
    1. voodooKobra
Note: I only did this for the sake of irony.
  48. timethief
    How quickly people forget.
    1. technogati
      Within a week.
    1. Stillthinking
      Are you being ironic?
