Discussions

I want to welcome all the new members to the Discussions.

For those of you who have just joined BlogCatalog and may have discovered your posts have been removed, please read the following.

In order to keep the Discussion area clean, flowing and fun we have a few community rules that you should be aware of. These are rules that were decided on by the community.

Exchange requests and link requests of any type aren't allowed in the discussions. You can however join Groups that have been set up for exchange and link requests at www.blogcatalog.com/groups/

The Discussions area is designed to facilitate dialogue between BlogCatalog members.

This means that if all your post says is "Click this link to learn about something", whatever that something is, the Post will be removed since it isn't designed to initiate a conversation.

You can of course link to your blog or another website however it needs to be as a reference not as the primary purpose of the post.

The best way to determine if your post is going to be removed is ask yourself the question, "is this post primarily designed to get people to click to my site"? If the answer is yes, then there is a very good chance that your post will be removed.

The purpose of these rules is to keep thes Discussions a valuable resources for BlogCatalog members to connect, learn and grow.

Please help us keep this area clean. If you see a post that isn't appropriate click on the Report link and an admin will review it.

Thanks

Tony

    1. pointlessbanter
In all seriousness I like that we are all trying to keep this place clean

It actually feels like a community around here.
    2. TonyB
      Thanks PB...

I'm looking forward to meeting you at BlogWorld.

ps: good time links are the exception.
    3. pointlessbanter
      Hopefully work will give in
  2. crkian
    I need a passport
    1. TonyB
CR...maybe you can exchange links for one.
    2. crkian
      Thats got me thinking!

      It hurts
    1. thelookout
      no probs :-)
  3. monkeytale
I believe people have simply misunderstood the "shameless blog promotion" category when they are doing this. In their haste to achieve some traffic they post mindlessly at times. I initiated a discussion thread a couple of weeks ago hoping that would help people out in this area. Simply put, a person needs to tell us a little about their post and what should compel us to click through to their site when they're using this category in the main discussion area. This would solve this problem for the most part.
    1. pointlessbanter
Maybe it should be retitled, "slightly embarassed to promote this"
    2. monkeytale
lol... If only that were true for some.

  4. TonyB
Or maybe it should be Im totally embarrased to promote this however here's why you should *#)#&) click on this link.
    1. monkeytale
Ooooh.... blunt and to the point. That's my style more often than not.
  5. crkian
Ive found a great new thing that the last 30 people have mentioned, but I will mention it anyway
    1. pointlessbanter
      are you f'ing kidding me
    2. monkeytale
lol... Sometimes you just can't word things simple enough it appears.

    3. DaneMorgan
HaHaHaHa This must have been a secret credit card commercial, because that was priceless.
  6. TonyB
Too funny! Sometimes words just fit.
  7. Blackysky
    ahahahhaha that was funny
  8. TonyB
If you still have questions about what types of posts are acceptable, check out the following post about Community Guidelines

  9. MeghnaK
Good that this thread has become sticky
    1. crkian
      er..well..gobsmacked...I...nevermind
  10. monkeytale
Yanno, sometimes people who are just skipping through life, oblivious to what things mean, are highly amusing. How can someone read this and then ask to have links?
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
The inner optimist in me would to say it was a joke...

      But somehow I suspect not.
  11. PetLvr
I was wondering why this discussion board keeps popping up and "Why don't people get it!?" .. but, then it hit me .. This must be a Sticky

    Good Idea.
  12. DavidAirey
I just noticed that my last comment (above) was 'removed by the community'.

As far as I remember, all I did was thanks 'thelookout' for mentioning one of my blog posts.

How many clicks on the 'report' button beside each comment does it take to remove my thanks?
    1. ender
good question ... that's really odd that it was removed. i hope there's some other process besides just a click of the report button in case "report" is clicked by accident. (yes, i know there's all sorts of little pop ups to ask if you REALLY wanna report this ... but some people just keep hitting return without reading ... )
  13. gosmelltheflowers
Can we still post our free flowers comps here at the board?

Not sure the protocol - we have been encouraged to in the past by admin here but need to know!

    Any thoughts?
    Cheers!
    1. aqualightphoto
Thats a good idea, I need to join it
  14. Stinkypaw
    Thank you for this!
  15. moneyrush
Fair enough...here's my link "lol" Just kidding.

    Thanks.
  16. laketrees
well it seems to me that there are rules for some and rules for others !!!!!!!
    I find that rather offensive.....
    1. harleyblues
      here here Miss Laketrees
  17. nusuni
How about someone bans signatures too? I'm sick of seeing the things:

    "Hello cool post

Please visit my pointless blog about forex and mesothelioma"

Half the time they blogs they have for their sig they don't even have on their profile. It's like... what the heck?

Sorry... I'm in a grumpy mood tonight. Stupid fly won't leave me alone
  18. MadameX
This thread was sticky...and then it wasn't anymore. Since the front discussion page currently has at least one link request thread and two comment exchange request threads, I thought maybe it needed to be seen again.
  19. maile
    I apologize. Here's the thread I started:
    www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/comments-exchange

Please excuse me, I should have read here first.
  20. AppleMan
You should make this discussion sticky so that everybody sees it.
  21. TonyB
    Sticked again!

If you see posts that you think are spam, please report them.
  22. harleyblues
Rules rules rules & more stinkin rules! hehehe lmao!
  23. clioandme
What about the recent phenomenon of requests for comments exchanges? How do they fit in?
    1. rippinkitten
It's funny how people try to work around things, isn't it?
    2. TonyB
Comment exchanges fit into this same category of not adding any value to the conversation. There are exceptions when the way the comment request is worded actually creates a Discussion.
  24. MeghnaK
Can't we have a separate group for Blog Reviews & Comment Exchanges etc.?
    1. TonyB
Yes you can in the Groups area. www.blogcatalog.com/groups
    2. MeghnaK
Thank you, siteproplus. I may not be experienced enough to start such a group.

What I wanted to say was that if we have a separate group for Blog Reviews, Link Exchanges, Comment exchanges etc., the main discussion would be more clean without these.

So, anybody who can think of starting such a group?
    3. MartinPlatt
I agree there. "Generate my Site Traffic for me" group or area!
    4. Davidlind
      Hi MeghnaK

Did you say you were twelve years old? You would have some amazing concerns for someone that age
  25. onreact
Do not request links, get linked because you are great and you link others!
  26. iriegal
I think that is great. To be honest, being new when I started here and entered into your discussion area, I thought that was the norm. I noticed if I just started a general post, well just discussing any subject that I was getting no response. Howevever, I started an exchange of links post that usually everyone would come in with the "add me" response.

I must admit though that through those exchanges I was able to view some outstanding blogs and come to know some wonderful writers and photographers.

So off to the "groups" to check them out I go..thanks
  27. QuestionHillary
    Fair enough.

    Keep up the good verbs.
  28. PastExpiry
Perhaps someone should make a group called SPAM. LOL.
  29. MartinPlatt
It seems ever so slightly a shame that the most popular discussions are "rate my blog" or "link back to me" and stuff like that. I don't think that that is particularly useful.

Exchanging information on how to get readers, or them going through your profile is cool. It degrades the coolness of this site to have all these discussions that are not discussions at all.

Giving feedback on something particular is fine, but just randomly visiting sites in exchange for other doing the same for you seems at odds with what you're trying to do.

Perhaps there should be a special area that doesn't get into the normal discussions area that is for that, so you can ask normal questions, and get normal answers without all the other "link me" BS?
    1. clioandme
There is. There are now BC groups devoted to such exchanges. But since the membership of this site is constantly growing, we need to keep letting new members about how things work. I'm glad this thread is now "sticky." BC didn't used to have such a handy feature.
    2. MartinPlatt
Yeah, it'd be nice if people used the knowledge of the community to improve their sites rather than a short term number of hits.

      Still, I guess that's a bit of a learning experience isn't it?

I might just start a discussion now...
  30. koydin
Thanks For the Info. I didn't know that Rule On Blogcatalog.
  31. nuaeman
Thanks for the info and Im also apologized as ever do spam here. :(

  33. clioandme
Is there a way to highlight this sticky discussion so that people actually pay attention to it?
    1. suburbqueen
Or change the title to "Please Read This Before Posting"...
    2. crpitt
Or maybe a way to send a bolt of lightning to those that don't bother to read it?
    3. TonyB
We can get it highlighted plus I'll rewrite the initial post to make it more succinct and focused with the title "Please Read This Before Posting".
  34. Xight
I've seen in a few forums a small message pops up before you can post or start to post asking telling the user if it is appropriate for this discussion. While there are still a lot of people who just click through it. I find it a nice easy way to remind, and or deter someone each time they start up a new topic.
  35. TonyB
If a post is designed to just get a click through and not start a Discussion it is spam.
  36. MadameX
    Wait...it's come unstuck again!
    1. clioandme
I think that's cause Tony stuck another thread to the top about 12/17, at least for awhile.
  37. Wawaron
Euh... je comprends arrien... pourriez vous traduire ? ;o))
  38. MyDen
    Tony,
This is actually off-topic but since this thread is at the top, i have a query about this particular discussion :
    www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/hottest-blog-online

The original discussion included a claim that a substantial part of the revenue earned from the site in question will be donated to American Diabetes Association and also that his brother is a diabetic. Unable to find any diabetes related articles or links to American Diabetes Association for donations at the site, i left a comment(abt 12 hrs ago) asking for elaboration. When i accessed the discussion now, i noticed that substance of this thread had been changed and all mentioned of diabetes has been removed.
All previous comments were also removed.

Was there a reason for the changes?
  39. TonyB
MyDen, I have no idea. Are you sure it's the same Discussion as I don't see a comment on that thread from you asking a question. There would be no way for him (that I know of) to remove other member's posts or change the initial subject after the initial editing period ends.

The current post is spam as all it does is ask to Spread the Word around about his blog. Im going to leave it up for now though until we figure out where or what happened to the post you are referring to.
    1. MyDen
      Tony,
Sorry for the confusion. I might have mistaken the current discussion as the one that i took part in, 12 hours ago but still i am unable to locate it. There were definitely two others, crpitt and suburbqueen, who left comments besides me.

And if it has been deleted, as crkian claims, any particular reason why?
    2. crpitt
Yes i commented on that one, it sounded fishy.
  40. crkian
Its a different post I think

It is I just checked the past comments I made the original thread was called 'Welcome to My Site'
  41. TonyB
CR..where is the original post? I did a search and nothing comes up for the terms brother & diabetes aside from MyDen's post here.
  42. crkian
check my comments I have made and its about the third one down, I mention that I think the thread should be deleted

Edit I found it but the thread has been deleted

    www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/welcome-to-my-new-site#comment_132323
  43. TonyB
    Thanks. I was completely confused.
  44. crkian
I am now, got to go find a shop that is open, at 5.51 in the morning
    1. Xight
Do you guys blog all day, and browse BC all night? Or is that just me as usual.
    2. crkian
Im a robot, ask anyone they all seem to think so. I blog and browse all day as well as work, look after the kids, look after my sites e.t.c
  45. baloot
    thanks bro..

u can remove my link and post that i had posted last 2days..
  46. Xight
I have like 1 site, and I go back and check stats like every 5 minutes to see if something new is up. I think I need a new hobby. By the way I like the play on Matt Cutt's name for your seo blog. I didn't even notice it was yours till now.
  47. crkian
It was a play on the name and also a pen name for myself, but everyone seems to know me so call me Chris anyway, it didnt work out as intended, so I changed the post writer from Admin to Chris
  48. top20
    Thanks PB...

I'm looking forward to meeting you at BlogWorld.
  49. Theresa111
Where is this BlogWorld? I thought we were already there? Please fill me in by clicking my Avatar and explaining in my Shout Box. Thank you very much. I really believed BlogCatalog was in cyber space.

Very glad to see this distinction in the discussions forum. It will make conversations much nicer and more interesting.
  50. GatherSuccess
I think a good way you can control the links.. maybe you can do some programming to detect approved links only =)
  51. swhitey
For a good time click here:

    www.brandidentityguru.com/wordpress

    Cheap, cheap, cheap fun
  52. TonyB
is it cheap free fun, or just cheap cheap fun?
    1. swhitey
Good question, what works for you?
  53. creatingsummer
i'm gonna have to say cheap cheap fun.
btw thanks for putting up this discussion. good policy.
  54. nplbjirel
I think it will be even effective if changed the title to "Please Read This Before Posting here" as written by suburbqueen and adding some example as well.
  55. gosmelltheflowers
    Group hug anyone?
    1. crkian
      omg another one
    2. crpitt
      HOLY MOTHER FATHER!
    3. clioandme
You gotta give Blackmoon credit for spamming the right thread.

Silly blogger. Fat chance I'll ever visit that blog now.
    4. MeghnaK
Even the request has become sticky here
  56. ccarey76
    LOL no link love huh?
  57. TonyB
Ccarey, BlogCatalog is a social network for bloggers. Everything we do for BlogCatalog is designed to create an environment for bloggers to connect, communicate, learn and have fun. Links are not part of the equation as link love tends to attract people who are more interested in google juice than in being part of a blogger community. So, you're right. No link love.
  58. hanxiansheng
I agree with you very much. In my opinion, a discuss board should be clean, it should be a place that can give us a good experience. So any commercial use is not proper. Because they should spread their commercial aim in other places, not here.
  59. visapaycard
    without link pls
  60. czixanggb
i so love blogcatalog! it's a great community here, i've found many friends here.

    myconsolingasylum.blogspot.com
  61. exinco
i was thinking that this title should blink or moving, so user can notice it immediately. they may not notice "No Link Request or Spamming the Discussion" or simply ignoring it.
  62. furniture27
It must be hard watching over all of us.
    1. clioandme
That's why there's a "Report This Topic" link at the beginning of every new thread. They need our help.
  63. hanxiansheng
Honesty is always a good thing.
  64. hanxiansheng
Sometimes we have to dance with chain.
    1. clioandme
Is that your own saying or a Chinese proverb?
    2. BlogBadly
I'm pretty sure it's the prison jig - when you're locked up in chains you gotta do a little dance.
  65. DaVincisBlogLog
I think this is good...but it's also important for people to help each other exchanging traffic

    davincisbloglog.blogspot.com/
    1. clioandme
Which would explain why you spammed two other discussion threads with your link and no relevant comment?:

If you want to do link exchanges, check out some of the relevant groups. There are people to help you out without spamming the group as a whole.
  66. Wawaron
it is possible i make a group to speak french between me and me ? ;o)))
  67. henrychiah
    thx for sharing
  68. hanxiansheng
Many people always invite me exchange links with them, but I don't like to do this, because i think link exchange is a spam to search engine.
  69. crkian
got to be a robot, even better an automatic ban
    1. clioandme
You mean you think there are no people capable of being that stupid? Let's hope your right.
  70. ModelElaine
Thank you for the info. I just recently joined and am still learning the rules.
  71. suburbqueen
Perhaps we need something when someone signs up for BC. Like an agreement that states absolutely no spam or your account will be terminated and the only way they can join is by agreeing to it. Granted, give the new guys a little leeway, but if constant spam continues, terminate them.

Sorry...a little irritated by the current spam floating through the threads
    1. gosmelltheflowers
Good idea, we're with ya and this makes perfect sense, a firm stance is needed!
  72. abhatnagar19
It is a tough job watching over so many people..sometimes i see threads like.."i want to see your blog" and "comment marathon"...and some like "show me your blog" getting 700 replies..most of them links. One solution to this problem can be to disable links from the main discussion boards. They can be used in the groups nevertheless.
    1. AppleMan
Well disbling links would mean that you can't refer people to other sites of interest to find out more. People post links here other than to their blogs.
  73. rampantheart
I go with you one hundred percent. Why should people spam when they know they have the talent?Spamming and shameless promotion shows they are not confident
  74. clockworkwar
Ive just come back. Lets see how the community has changed.

    www.rosshetherington.com/hc/
    1. clioandme
Groups, Ross. Groups. You'll love the StumbleUpon one Chris is running. It includes all kinds of exchanges.
    2. MadameX
Oh, and there's this electro-shock feature that's automatically triggered when you drop a link somewhere it isn't relevant...did you feel that?
    3. crkian
Hes in it but Ive had reports he doesnt stumble anybody else.
  75. gosmelltheflowers
    Booo, hisss, booo!

The bad guy leaves the stage!
  76. top20
    Thats got me thinking!

    need passport
  77. sniperhiga
I am really sick from social network spammers.
People want to see quality content!!!!!
  78. bloggernoob
i hate spam. christmas is not only about giving, its about not spamming
  79. offendedblogger
I'm sorry, I am a little slow...so basically everytime I post a link to an new "Offensive" at my blog in the "SHAMELESS BLOG PROMOTION" area, I am breaking a rule here?

If so, what is that section for, exactly?
  80. Puffmatty
i'll still go to your site,OB, for a fee. Spam is delicious
    1. offendedblogger
Lynyrd, you are very nice for a guy who has such issues with his pants.
  81. sniperhiga
So, I guess i have to cancel my account with BlogCatalog

    Just kidding.
  82. absolutelytrue
Good policy. I love the community here and the groups and all the new features. Thanks for working so hard to make BC a great place to be.
  83. beinki
Thanks for the heads up on the warning, being new meat I would'nt want to break the rules on my first day and watch my blog go down from 1.2 to 1.1 Just kidding. Looking forward to working with many of you.
    beinki.
  84. fairul
Hi there, for me its fair, but please think about this, human being always made some mistake....please be able to give a second chance.
  85. towr
oh no, sorry for my previous links in the discussions... im not aware, sorry
  86. mp3jiwang
    me too.....
so sorry for the link on the discussion before..
    i didn't know about it.
  87. scorpionmagnet
Thanks Tony. Just read the House Rules today. Got a mistake hehehe.
  88. laneyjane1
    SiteProPlus,
I am very new to blogging and blog catalog as well. Would my post be removed if I asked for members honest opinions of my blog? I guess in theory, the post would be asking them to click on the site, so quite possibly it may be against the rules. Thanks
    Laney
  89. Sewdelish
Ooops! I am new to blogging and the internet. I guess I have probably spammed a couple of people when I have left them a comment and left my link! I had no idea what spamming was. I thought it was only just something to do with junk type email.

Ha ha ha I guess we all do learn something new everyday.
  90. blerim

  95. riverstyxxx
Die spammers die. Die die die. haha.
  96. Digits
Good to know. I see so many communities failing due to spam. No one wants to remain active when every post lacks substance and everything is a freaking ad!
  97. kdawg68
What's the policy on Baking Soda?
    1. clioandme
Cleans away the smell of overcooked spam.
  98. dreesyach
Ok, theres a link to my blog in my BC's latest discussion, but thats not as the primary purpose of the post.

  101. lambs123
Hey whats wrong if i tell someone to go to my blog and read an article???
Is'nt this site for sharing each others blogs???
  102. FitnessDiva
You guys are hiliarious. Didn't he just say don't post links spamming the board? And almost half the posts on this thread are people pimping their links! Funny!
    1. BK
Haha, and I thought I am the only one seeing those links : )
  103. aussiecynic
    about time....lololol
  104. eddyprasetyo
    OoOoOppss...! Forgive..me...i am wrong cabin....
  105. tylerwlee
OOOOhhh Sorry I am new and did not know I will remove it
  106. hirfoanbhg12
LOL This rules helps to keep blogcatalog so good.
  107. lasunrose
It's good to be reminded of the rules every now and then. Many bloggers posts request for your link in the discussions, and they probably don't realize it's against Blog Catalog's terms.
  108. w0lfh0und
I posted a discussion under 'shameless blog promotion' and now can find no trace. I'm guessing it has been removed. I can understand the potential for it being misunderstood and the necessity for control but it was entirely genuine. Have we really reached such a level of paranoia?

Maybe I just can't find it. I hope so, I would consider it extremely poor practice to have removed it without any form of notification. Is there any way to tell for sure?
    1. clioandme
Call it paranoia, if you will. Or maybe you could spend more time formulating it in a manner that won't get it flagged. The latter method shows more courtesy for fellow BC types, and it will get you better results. Your call.

Regarding your last question, do a search by username and see what you come up with. (See the search box on the right-hand side of this page?)
  109. w0lfh0und
Yep, gone and not a trace of an email, message or notification of any kind. How very unfortunate.
    1. clioandme
Now you know. For what it's worth, the rules make this a better place, and they can even benefit you in terms of traffic. You just have to give it a little thought.

FYI, there's a more expansive draft of rules here: www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-this-before-posting-1
