I want to welcome all the new members to the Discussions.
For those of you who have just joined BlogCatalog and may have discovered your posts have been removed, please read the following.
In order to keep the Discussion area clean, flowing and fun we have a few community rules that you should be aware of. These are rules that were decided on by the community.
Exchange requests and link requests of any type aren't allowed in the discussions. You can however join Groups that have been set up for exchange and link requests at www.blogcatalog.com/groups/
The Discussions area is designed to facilitate dialogue between BlogCatalog members.
This means that if all your post says is "Click this link to learn about something", whatever that something is, the Post will be removed since it isn't designed to initiate a conversation.
You can of course link to your blog or another website however it needs to be as a reference not as the primary purpose of the post.
The best way to determine if your post is going to be removed is ask yourself the question, "is this post primarily designed to get people to click to my site"? If the answer is yes, then there is a very good chance that your post will be removed.
The purpose of these rules is to keep thes Discussions a valuable resources for BlogCatalog members to connect, learn and grow.
Please help us keep this area clean. If you see a post that isn't appropriate click on the Report link and an admin will review it.
Thanks
Tony

I believe people have simply misunderstood the "shameless blog promotion" category when they are doing this. In their haste to achieve some traffic they post mindlessly at times. I initiated a discussion thread a couple of weeks ago hoping that would help people out in this area. Simply put, a person needs to tell us a little about their post and what should compel us to click through to their site when they're using this category in the main discussion area. This would solve this problem for the most part.

Or maybe it should be Im totally embarrased to promote this however here's why you should *#)#&) click on this link.

Yanno, sometimes people who are just skipping through life, oblivious to what things mean, are highly amusing. How can someone read this and then ask to have links?
-
I just noticed that my last comment (above) was 'removed by the community'.
As far as I remember, all I did was thanks 'thelookout' for mentioning one of my blog posts.
How many clicks on the 'report' button beside each comment does it take to remove my thanks?-
good question ... that's really odd that it was removed. i hope there's some other process besides just a click of the report button in case "report" is clicked by accident. (yes, i know there's all sorts of little pop ups to ask if you REALLY wanna report this ... but some people just keep hitting return without reading ...
)

Can we still post our free flowers comps here at the board?
Not sure the protocol - we have been encouraged to in the past by admin here but need to know!
Any thoughts?
Cheers! -
cool - I just made a group for this reason:
www.blogcatalog.com/group/blog-marketplace-buy-sell-or-trade -
well it seems to me that there are rules for some and rules for others !!!!!!!
I find that rather offensive..... -
How about someone bans signatures too? I'm sick of seeing the things:
"Hello cool post
Please visit my pointless blog about forex and mesothelioma"
Half the time they blogs they have for their sig they don't even have on their profile. It's like... what the heck?
Sorry... I'm in a grumpy mood tonight. Stupid fly won't leave me alone

Is this wrong please let me know.

I apologize. Here's the thread I started:

Please excuse me, I should have read here first. -

Yes you can in the Groups area. www.blogcatalog.com/groups
-
Thank you, siteproplus. I may not be experienced enough to start such a group.
What I wanted to say was that if we have a separate group for Blog Reviews, Link Exchanges, Comment exchanges etc., the main discussion would be more clean without these.
So, anybody who can think of starting such a group?
-

I think that is great. To be honest, being new when I started here and entered into your discussion area, I thought that was the norm. I noticed if I just started a general post, well just discussing any subject that I was getting no response. Howevever, I started an exchange of links post that usually everyone would come in with the "add me" response.
I must admit though that through those exchanges I was able to view some outstanding blogs and come to know some wonderful writers and photographers.
So off to the "groups" to check them out I go..thanks -
It seems ever so slightly a shame that the most popular discussions are "rate my blog" or "link back to me" and stuff like that. I don't think that that is particularly useful.
Exchanging information on how to get readers, or them going through your profile is cool. It degrades the coolness of this site to have all these discussions that are not discussions at all.
Giving feedback on something particular is fine, but just randomly visiting sites in exchange for other doing the same for you seems at odds with what you're trying to do.
Perhaps there should be a special area that doesn't get into the normal discussions area that is for that, so you can ask normal questions, and get normal answers without all the other "link me" BS? -

I've seen in a few forums a small message pops up before you can post or start to post asking telling the user if it is appropriate for this discussion. While there are still a lot of people who just click through it. I find it a nice easy way to remind, and or deter someone each time they start up a new topic.

Tony,
This is actually off-topic but since this thread is at the top, i have a query about this particular discussion :
www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/hottest-blog-online
The original discussion included a claim that a substantial part of the revenue earned from the site in question will be donated to American Diabetes Association and also that his brother is a diabetic. Unable to find any diabetes related articles or links to American Diabetes Association for donations at the site, i left a comment(abt 12 hrs ago) asking for elaboration. When i accessed the discussion now, i noticed that substance of this thread had been changed and all mentioned of diabetes has been removed.
All previous comments were also removed.
Was there a reason for the changes? -
MyDen, I have no idea. Are you sure it's the same Discussion as I don't see a comment on that thread from you asking a question. There would be no way for him (that I know of) to remove other member's posts or change the initial subject after the initial editing period ends.
The current post is spam as all it does is ask to Spread the Word around about his blog. Im going to leave it up for now though until we figure out where or what happened to the post you are referring to.-
Tony,
Sorry for the confusion. I might have mistaken the current discussion as the one that i took part in, 12 hours ago but still i am unable to locate it. There were definitely two others, crpitt and suburbqueen, who left comments besides me.
And if it has been deleted, as crkian claims, any particular reason why?
-
-
check my comments I have made and its about the third one down, I mention that I think the thread should be deleted
Edit I found it but the thread has been deleted

Where is this BlogWorld? I thought we were already there? Please fill me in by clicking my Avatar and explaining in my Shout Box. Thank you very much. I really believed BlogCatalog was in cyber space.
Very glad to see this distinction in the discussions forum. It will make conversations much nicer and more interesting. -

Ccarey, BlogCatalog is a social network for bloggers. Everything we do for BlogCatalog is designed to create an environment for bloggers to connect, communicate, learn and have fun. Links are not part of the equation as link love tends to attract people who are more interested in google juice than in being part of a blogger community. So, you're right. No link love.

i so love blogcatalog! it's a great community here, i've found many friends here.

Perhaps we need something when someone signs up for BC. Like an agreement that states absolutely no spam or your account will be terminated and the only way they can join is by agreeing to it. Granted, give the new guys a little leeway, but if constant spam continues, terminate them.
Sorry...a little irritated by the current spam floating through the threads
-
It is a tough job watching over so many people..sometimes i see threads like.."i want to see your blog" and "comment marathon"...and some like "show me your blog" getting 700 replies..most of them links. One solution to this problem can be to disable links from the main discussion boards. They can be used in the groups nevertheless.

SiteProPlus,
I am very new to blogging and blog catalog as well. Would my post be removed if I asked for members honest opinions of my blog? I guess in theory, the post would be asking them to click on the site, so quite possibly it may be against the rules. Thanks
Laney -
Ooops! I am new to blogging and the internet. I guess I have probably spammed a couple of people when I have left them a comment and left my link! I had no idea what spamming was. I thought it was only just something to do with junk type email.
Ha ha ha I guess we all do learn something new everyday. -

You guys are hiliarious. Didn't he just say don't post links spamming the board? And almost half the posts on this thread are people pimping their links! Funny!

I posted a discussion under 'shameless blog promotion' and now can find no trace. I'm guessing it has been removed. I can understand the potential for it being misunderstood and the necessity for control but it was entirely genuine. Have we really reached such a level of paranoia?
Maybe I just can't find it. I hope so, I would consider it extremely poor practice to have removed it without any form of notification. Is there any way to tell for sure?-
Call it paranoia, if you will. Or maybe you could spend more time formulating it in a manner that won't get it flagged. The latter method shows more courtesy for fellow BC types, and it will get you better results. Your call.
Regarding your last question, do a search by username and see what you come up with. (See the search box on the right-hand side of this page?)

Now you know. For what it's worth, the rules make this a better place, and they can even benefit you in terms of traffic. You just have to give it a little thought.
FYI, there's a more expansive draft of rules here: www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/read-this-before-posting-1
