BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama might have rolled a gutter ball on NBC's "The Tonight Show."

Toward the end of the interview on Thursday, Obama told host Jay Leno he's been practicing at the White House's bowling alley but wasn't happy with his score of 129.

Leno complimented Obama on the score, but the president quipped, "It was like the Special Olympics or something," which prompted laughter from the audience.

Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said the president's offhand remark was not meant to disparage the Special Olympics, only to poke some fun at the commander-in-chief's bowling skills......

Not "meant to disparage the Special Olympics?"

How about not meant to be inconsiderate of people who are mentally handicapped and who are seen as stars by their families while they make efforts to perform to the best of their physical abilities?

Oh, wait, this just in...Obama supporters say the president inherited mentally handicapped people from the Bush administration. They say that humor that isn't humorous was also inherited from the Bush administration.

Why do I get the feeling that you're a bitter McPalin supporter?

    Joke in bad taste...IMPEACH!!
    1. TheBigRuski
I voted Obama...but I call them as I see them!
  2. MadameX
    Ever seen the Special Olympics?
    1. TheBigRuski
      It's a beautiful thing!
    2. MadameX
Yep, and what's beautiful about it? It's at least in part that the participants just go out and do whatever they're able to do, and it's good enough for everyone (something sadly lacking in our society). Athletic prowess is NOT the focus of the event. It's not clear to me how it's insulting to acknowledge that.
    3. TheBigRuski
Some people might be insulted by the reference or correlation to a "handicapped type score or ability" Obama was equating his poor bowling abilities to.
    4. MadameX
It seems that many people were--but I have to think that they're mostly people who don't know a lot about the Special Olympics and perhaps are projecting their own biases.
  3. Floormodel
I think he's stirring up a bee's nest but I personally didn't find it offensive. Unfortunately someone will.
    1. TheBigRuski
      Someone? Try Google now!
    2. Floormodel
I've spent my entire life involved with Special Olympics and my entire life with Special Olympians. I don't find comments like that one offensive, I do find hatred offensive and I didn't hear hatred in his quip. It's easy to get over-offended for the sake of being upset. But sometimes it's wasted energy to overreact to a comment without looking at it's intent.
    3. TheBigRuski
You have an extremely valid point...and I agree with you. However, can you imagine if George W. Bush had made this quip during his presidency?

Front page NY Times in a heartbeat!
    4. Floormodel
and isn't his comment also "front page in a heartbeat"?

I don't judge too quickly for comments like his, the same way I didn't judge Bush for his occasional lapse of good judgement comments. I've made too many myself that were not intended cruely or to be hurtful and that I regretted the second my lips closed from saying them.
  4. redeemedsoul136
It was only a joke if the special Olympics committee laughs about it. Until then it's messed up. It's like racial/ethnic jokes, they just fuel an already existing oppression.
  5. TheBigRuski
BTW...do you think it was good strategery for Obama to go on Leno?
    1. Epicharis
I think it's in keeping with what Obama wants his presidency to be. He wants to be in touch with the American public and he wants them to feel like they are in touch with the White House.
  6. CelebrityIcePop
he's an idiot and he's showing his true colours.

Most Special Olympic athletes could wipe the floor with able bodied people. Their strength and endurance is comparable to all top performing athletes if not more so, it has to be.

Put an able bodied athlete in a wheel chair, enter them in a race and see how far they get, not far! Disabled athletes have to work damn hard to compete and achieve their results.

I once watched a documentary about a woman with no arms caring for her baby. She cared for that baby on her own and it was like watching a miracle take place, the way she managed to do for this baby everything a person with arms could do. She used her legs, shoulders and everything else she had.

Humans are capable of much more than we believe ourselves capable of and only in great adversity of through competitive challenges do we realise our full potential.
    1. TheBigRuski
...apparently, some people are blaming the quip on the Leno show as the lack of a teleprompter.
    2. Epicharis
there's a difference between the special olympics and the paralympics
    3. MadameX
I hope it's not an Obama supporter who is making that claim. After all, doesn't it really say "yeah, dumb things are gonna come out if he goes off script?" Not very flattering to the President.
  7. aningeniousname
The difference between Obama and Bush is that if Bush had of said that he would have made some kind of face to illustrate the point.
    1. Epicharis
      you are so right!
  8. csiunatc
Hey, at least now we know it's ok to make fun of handicapped and mentally challenged.

As long as they aren't black.

    If Obama is the answer...
It must have been a REALLY stupid question
    1. Epicharis
If only America had gone with the team whose VP thinks Africa is a country...
    2. csiunatc
You mean as opposed to having a president who doesn't know how many states there are?
    3. Epicharis
if you watch that clip, he clearly said 'state' when he meant 'city'...there's a difference between a slip of the tongue and a complete moron.
    4. csiunatc
Oh, you mean because he mentions ALASKA And HAWAII as the ONE he hasn't visited? Yeah they are big CITIES.
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws

At least stick to the truth. Youtube makes you look like a moron when you don't.

But you are right, since it's obvious looking at that clip that he does indeed mean STATES, he is a complete moron.
    5. Epicharis
I was thinking of another clip...that actually seems like he's joking...hence the laughter in the background...
    6. csiunatc
Ok go find that clip then...

Would love to see more than your rambling to prove your point.
    7. Epicharis
alright smartypants...seems I must have been thinking about that clip...misrembered. That does look like a joke, if you watch it again. But you can't honestly think Obama is an idiot...he's clearly a capable individual...and we all have the occasional slip up.
    8. drjay1966
I'm really, really buying that you're authentically offended by this, csiunatc, given how politically correct your sense of humor is (like that hilarious and completely inoffensive joke about Obama eating watermelon and fried chicken, or the one about how gay people like sausage).
    9. csiunatc
No, i don't think he is an idiot, He is just woefully inadequate in his current position.

He is a salesman, nothing more nothing less, And he is complete crap when his teleprompter is off.

He is a willing puppet, largely dishonest, and all around useless, but not an idiot. If he was an idiot, then i guess "special olympics" wouldn't have been out of place.

And people are laughing because he didn't go to Alaska, you might remember what his ratings were in that state at the time. Please don't make yourself look dumb by pretending to not understand at least that much.
    10. csiunatc
      Drjay,

I'm not offended, what the point is, is the complete understanding every Obama fanboy and girl has for him making a statement like that when we know you all would be climbing the walls screaming for a firing squad if McCain would have said something similar.

Your complete hypocrisy is actually more sad than upsetting. It's hard to be really upset when it is this predictable and transparent.
    11. Epicharis
I'm English, I didn't follow every minute detail of the electoral race.

would you give an example of his useless inadequacy and dishonesty other than slips of the tongue?
    12. Floormodel
aren't you glad that the rest of us aren't judged by every word that comes out of our mouths? I know I am.
  9. csiunatc
    Hmm,

let's start with turbotax and his cohorts. Seems like Obama is picking his staff from the IRS Audit list.

His promise not to have any Lobbyists in the Whitehouse, then he appoints one of the Biggest WS lobbyists to head up the CIA (with absolutely NO intelligence background)

And he appoints the chief lobbyist from Raytheon to Deputy Defense secretary,

Screaming how bad McCain and Bush were for saying the economy was fundamentally sound. And now making the same statements himself.

Spending time on the College BAsketball picks when he clearly has better things to be doing. (Insert favorite black joke here)

And then there is about a million things about the bailout that is turning out to be a complete joke, But quite frankly, if you want to start somewhere, check out snopes.com
    www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp

Or you can read through this.
    www.audacityofhypocrisy.com/fashion-shows/

    Just for a starter.
    1. Epicharis
did you look at that snopes link? all those 'lies' are themselves either completely made up or intentional misinterpretations...

and that second link contains this statement:

"62.) I am very Anti-Terror - LIAR. [03/30/2008] One of your good pals is long time radical and terrorist William Ayers"

Bill Ayers was a member of a terrorist organisation when Obama was 8...and Bill Ayers and Obama are only connected because they happened to be on the same board once. That site obviously has a lot of integrity...

...yeah...I believe that would be an own-goal there...

"Insert favorite black joke here" < -- are you happily announcing your racism? You, sir, are an idiot.
  10. Arcticulates
I wish he didn't make that remark... even if meant in jest it was insulting to an amazing bunch of people that are brave, loving and beautiful and enduring. As there is no comparability to his capabilities as healthy bowler to physically and mentally challenged people wholehearted doing the absolute best they can. I have worked with the special Olympics for many many years. It is a great organization.

If it was a slip of the tongue or just off the cuff, he owes the Special Olympics a public apology! He is the President of United States.. there is no excuses! I would demand this of anyone in that kind of powerful leadership!
    1. TheBigRuski
Agreed...I'm posting the response to Obama's apology from the Special Olympics president below.
  11. samureyed
People are so uptight. Oh no the president made a funny about handicapped people!

I think you will all agree we have bigger problems, but lets sit here and complain about this nonsense instead.
    1. csiunatc
See what happens if a president other than Obama makes a "funny" about a group of people.

Hell, see DrJay above, even making a watermelon joke around Obama is tantamount to declaring a racial war.
    2. samureyed
Who cares what he said on Leno, the worst part about this is that hes off playing celebrity while the Fed is buying up 1.15 trillion dollars of our debt. Say good bye to the USD.

I wouldn't be surprised if he said it on purpose to smokescreen the real problems in our economy. You know, make the masses upset about an anthill while the mountain behind it burns to the ground.
  12. busylizzy
If a bowling score of 129 is for the Special Olympics, I'd like to sign up for some lessons!
  13. freeatlast
I could care less, but do believe that whatever minor-drama comes from this is to be expected and though I didn't vote republican, KNOW that if a republican prez was in that office this joke would NOT be taken lightly.... i always find opposing side's hypocrisy to be utterly amazing, and sickening... regardless of the side. It came out of his mouth and people should accept/expect this fallout.
    1. csiunatc
      Yeah you are right.

low scores are Special Olympics traits, And poor verbal skills are definately a Black thing.

Lets see how long that stands before it gets "removed by community" or i get banned..
    2. jacqueroxx
And white people can't dance. Ok, what are you trying to prove?
    3. Epicharis
There's a difference between saying black people have poor verbal skills and saying that disabled people are often less able-bodied. you honestly can't see the difference?
    4. csiunatc
      White peopla can't dance..

Hmm, if you go by my skills, that would have to be the truth of the day.
  14. jacqueroxx
My little brother's autistic and he's been in the Special Olympics...Obama's comment didn't offend me or anyone in my family. I thought it was funny
  15. busylizzy
...I'm gonna soak up some sun
    Gonna tell everyone
    To lighten up!!!!!!!!
  16. Houseonahill
We are all so politically correct now we can't say anything or make any jokes or laugh...we are so uptight we can't crap...BORING!!!

We can't even laugh at ourselves...I didnt see it, and I really don't care...we have bigger problems than President Obama being on Jay Leno ~ 1984 Thought Police Coming Soon to Your Neighborhood!!
  17. TheBigRuski
On his way back to Washington on Air Force One, Obama called the chairman of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver, to say he was sorry -- even before the taped program aired late Thursday night.

"He expressed his disappointed and he apologized in a way that was very moving. He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population," Shriver said Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America." Obama, Shriver said, wants to have some Special Olympic athletes visit the White House to bowl or play basketball.

Still, Shriver said, "I think it's important to see that words hurt and words do matter. And these words that in some respect can be seem as humiliating or a put down to people with special needs do cause pain and they do result in stereotypes."

    Any questions?
    1. Epicharis
right, so he apologised the first moment he got...what are you moaning about?
    2. TheBigRuski
Not moaning...just reminded the "I hate George Bush" crowd of their 8+ years of hatred and ignorance.
    3. Epicharis
really? where did you do that? all I can see is obama-bashing! he screwed up, he said sorry...so far he hasn't started any wars or tortured anyone etc etc etc....
    4. TheBigRuski
Don't you understand the concept of irony?
    5. Epicharis
      apparently not as you do...?
  18. legbamel
As a really, really bad bowler, I'm personally offended that he views a score of 129 so poorly. For me, that would generate celebration, not a throw-away laugh on Leno. I'm trying to best phrase my outrage for a letter to his administration, right now, but they will be hearing from me.
    1. busylizzy
      I agree!!!!!
  19. satijournal
Oooooh... we're just so sensitive. We have to watch every word with the politically correct right-wingers.
    1. csiunatc
DOesn't sit so well with you now that you're getting held to the same standards that you've been shouting about for so long huh.

What a surprise. Pathetic as always.
    2. TheBigRuski
Did you think your 8 years of "George Bush is dumb" would not have consequences?

Did you think your delusional sense of right and wrong in regards to your attempted character assassination of Sarah Palin would not have repercussions?

Did you think Obama Nation is some kind of untouchable Land of Oz?

BTW...the 8 years of that drumbeat has been extended into Obama's presidency as well...with a new twist...George Bush is dumb, and I inherited the entire sins of the world from Bush.
    3. Epicharis
I think Sati was being ironic...why is it that right-wing people never get the concept of irony?
    4. ThriftShopRomantic
      Wow, it's like wolves circling...

Wipe the slathering drool off your faces, guys. It's down your shirts and gonna be hell to launder.
    5. satijournal
Did you think your 8 years of "George Bush is dumb" would not have consequences?

I never claimed Bush was dumb. Now the people who voted for him -- that's another story.
  20. fruitcake
I personally laughed at the joke too. The President is only human. Guess what? I guarantee he'll say something stupid again.
    1. insideskinny
Will say something stupid again, he never stops saying something stupid. "I didn't know about the AIG bonuses." STUPID "There will be no pork in this bailout." STUPID. Yea, he's only human. Being human isn't an excuse for bad decisions especially for being the President of the United States of America. He should be a little more intelligent then the average human. I still haven't seen how.
  21. mikeny07
If George Bush said that, his picture would be on every left wing site with the word "IDIOT" above the picture.

Now Obama said something dumb and it is OK. Of course it is, because the media is slanted so far left today.
    1. satijournal
No, now it's on every right-wing website along with all the feigned outrage. George Bush joked about not being able to find WMDs and the MSM barely touched on it because the media is slanted so far to the right.
  22. rhanley3
I'll admit that the comment Obama made was certainly in poor taste, despite the notion that I truly don't think he meant to be offensive. It was a bad joke and he will be prone to the consequences the come up.

I have no doubt that Obama could get slammed for this by Republicans just as he would get slammed by Democrats if he were Republican. That is the nature of our political system, despite Obama's desire for a degree of non-partisanship.

However, to reflect on how Bush would have been treated in a similar situation is not productive. I understand he had supporters who might be bitter over the media's treatment of Obama. But this isn't a time to be bitter over anything. You can approve of Obama or not, but the fact is that we, as a country, are up the creek without a paddle and this man is the one dealing with all of that for at least the next four years. So either spend the next four years dismissing the man for a mistake or move towards the future. And I want to be clear when I say we need to move on: I am not saying to dismiss the offense people involved with the Special Olympics, in any aspect, might have taken. I also want to make clear that Democrats probably dismissed Bush during his administration and halted the idea of progress. It's going to happen on all sides.

If you want a good example of the attitude we all need to take, take McCain's. Despite Obama and his reps making a statement about our economy that McCain was slammed for during the election, McCain is not being bitter about it. He has stated that he is going to remain a loyal opposition; he is going to support our leader but be willing to argue against him when he disagrees. In a way, we all need to be that.
  23. MadMadMargo
Wow, it's not like he had sex outside of his marriage and then lied about it.
  24. cooper
Cone on people, admit it, if someone conservative said this you'd be all up in arms. It is offensive and I hope he takes this as a hard lesson. I haven't watched much telly and never watch Leno, but for god sake Mr President stay off the late night shows will you.

It is true if Bush said it it would be all around, we have to hold all our leaders up to the same standard.
  25. intarso
oh no! time to feign outrage! Us Americans are really good at feigning outrage about things we never really cared about before, but are suddenly VERY upset by.
    1. Epicharis
I wonder how many of the outraged have ever called anyone a retard etc....
    2. intarso
or how many who are suddenly praising the importance of the special olympics have ever actually volunteered to help at it, or with anything related to special needs kids and adults...

      probably not many.
    3. insideskinny
      SiuilARuin
I wonder how many of the outraged have ever called anyone a retard etc....

He is the President of the United States. He is supposed to be held at a little higher standard then us outraged folks. Those that voted for him i think did not realize what he was running for. It was more of a popularity contest then realizing the importance of the outcome.
  26. cooper
What on earth does not having volunteered at a Special Olympic Event have to do with ability to be outraged over the comment?

"We never cared about before" - I imagine you should really speak only for yourself.

On a daily basis there are hundreds of things people never think about, but it does not make their outrage any less justified. We can praise or think highly of a lot of organizations or events we do not personally take part in.
    1. intarso
you know, attempting to insult someone really doesn't help to prove a point

Was it something he shouldn't have said? Yes, of course. Was it something worthy of "outrage"? No.

Anyone who has ever worked with, taught, raised, or had family members with special needs understands that a sense of humor is one of the most important things to have. You'll probably find that most people who actually have anything to do with the special olympics really aren't wasting their time being "outraged". Being outraged by things like this is a waste of time - if everyone with all this supposed outrage bothered to donate a few dollars and cents to the special olympics or any of the other dozens and dozens of great charities that work with and help special needs folks, that would make a much more powerful statement.

As posted in the other thread on this:

Having taught classes with special needs kids - severely autistic & mentally retarded....it's pretty clear that having a great sense of humor is a MUST.

It was a crappy joke, and I'm sure he started kicking himself right after saying it, but - the people who are most "outraged" by this have likely never had anything to do with anyone with special needs. Those who have, know that wasting time being outraged solves nothing. It's much better to laugh things off and quickly move on with life. Outrage sells newspapers though.
  27. cooper
I attempted to insult you how? by disagreeing with you?
Actually like I said speak for yourself, though I'm sure there are a lot of people who aren't offended, having worked with special needs kid - true not since high school when I taught art to them - having having seem my friends sister grow up and fed her through an g - tube, and having just spoken to a friend who has a sister with CP I'd have to say you are not speaking for everyone.

The point really of the op was that if this were Bush progressives would be all over him. I agree with that. There doesn't need to be a hug dialogue about it, but I find it funny that the same people who most definitely would have rammed this down a Republican throat are now saying it's no such a big deal.

It is a big deal and Obama needs to stay off show like Leno anyway.
    1. voodooKobra
What? Comment removed by the community?! SHENANIGANS!
  28. timethief
Obama committed a gaffe and apologized. What I can't get over is how hung up people are on this one special Olympics gaffe. America faces huge economic challenges and business as usual will NOT cure the problems. The huge economic problem affects almost every other nation on earth.

It takes no knowledge whatsoever to stir up controversy on this gaffe but it does take some knowledge to address the actual problems of the nation.

So is this fixation on the gaffe an avoidance mechanism for those who have nothing but self righteous indignation to express? Or this gaffe an opportunistic attempt to fan flames in order to secure Diggs, or what?

    What do we see?
Blah, blah, blah about the gaffe ...
    [she rolls her eyes].
    1. cooper
They really aren't hung up on the gaffee what they are hung up on is the fact that so many of those who support Obama are calling it nothing, but the fact is if the gaffee was made on the other side of the fence those same people would be calling it out loudly.
Rightly so, but people need to move on quickly. I'm more concerned with the fact of public figures especially presidents on late night talk shows, personally I believe that has to stop.
    2. ClayrnDarrow
@timethief (snaps fingers)(rolls eyes) You tell 'em sister.
    3. Epicharis
I think the reason liberals aren't so fussed about Obama saying this is because they know he didn't mean it and that he doesn't think like that...with Bush you really had no idea if he meant what he said. Also...Republicans and bigotry are often good friends...
    4. Stillthinking
Ok, as an unapologetic liberal and Obama supporter, I will say this. I have not commented on this gaffe because this single comment is not reflective on Obama's administrative policies or his presidency.

With Bush, it wasn't his gaffes that bothered me (though his speeches often made me cringe).

It was his utter and total thick headed stubborn refusal to listen to anyone other than the few pulling his strings.
  29. dsriharsha
    What the hell..

I just watched the show a little while back and I don't understand whats the issue here..
It was a silly joke. There is nothing to get all worked up. Obama need not have apologized, though it was good that he did.
    1. timethief
I'm guessing that someone has submitted either a post or a news report on this gaffe to Digg, etc. and is working this thread here on the BC forum to drive up votes, but of course, I could be wrong.
    2. kat822
good god get real who cares if a post was dug or if a person did such a post, dug it and then contributed to this discussion....
    3. timethief
Who said anything about caring? My guess is my guess and if you don't like my guesses then you can choose to stop tailgating me and responding to my comments.
  30. Lydia
OH, big deal. For me the real issue is his appearing on the Tonight Show. I didn't think that was the best idea to begin with. And the lack of teleprompter in the midst of a free-wheeling talk show format proves my point.
    1. gmoney
why can't Obama be on the Tonight Show?
    2. dinsquared
Why? Presidents have been on talk shows before.
    3. TheBigRuski
      Not sitting (current) presidents!
  31. gmoney
I am not on BlogCatalog as much as I use to be..... Lord knows I would have started this thread, but it would have been titled Obama hates the Retards.

Listen, the joke was a poor attempt at humor and for all you righties, the left wing controlled socialist believing, anti-capitalism crowd is all over this story. This is not a left and a right issue, this is not even really a issue.

Who is really getting upset at this issue? Is it the Special Olympians or is it people that are offended by anything and everything. Last time I talked to my "special" friends they wanted to be joked with and made fun of just like anyone else.
I am sure that Obama will have a few of his special friends to the WhiteHouse and he will get his ass spanked in bowling.

Or maybe he will just invite Bush over...........
  32. txtface
The joke was out of place. A big oops. But, hey, the man ain't no saint.
  33. beinki
    He's no Saint He's a CHEESE NOODLE!
  34. NatetheGrate
Who cares? If poor taste were a crime, nobody would be innocent.
  35. Shad0w
Like Obama, but that was not a good comment. Someone needs a nap, cold shower and a few rounds of grilling before the next interview.
  36. kat822
It was a joke people, relax, I work with Special Education Students all day you've gotta have a sense of humor, and believe me I've heard worse from their own parents
  37. dinsquared
It was a stupid joke, and he clearly put his foot in his mouth. That's never happened to a president before...certainly not.
  38. 210betty
I could guess that many of us has said something equally as stupid.

The fact that a blunder is that important is pretty sad. Why aren't we more upset about more important things?
  39. 1brncowco
Were you an Obama supporter before he went on Jay Leno? I doubt it. I hope you will soon get tired of knit-picking. So he made a joke. So it was about the Special Olympics. How many handicap people across the nation did he MAKE smile, should've been your question.

This is getting way too much air time. The right is going to attack Obama on whatever he does and says. Their agenda is attack Obama and the demos. Turn off the channel until they have something worthwhile to say.
  41. rfburnhertz
A tasteless joke, something GWB would have been hung for, but really too much is being made of it.

There are far, far more important things that require the publics attention.
    1. TheBigRuski
Yes, however what makes this thing have legs is exactly that...Bush was flogged for 8 years! It's this elitists bunch that are simply "above it all"...and all they have to do is say Bush is dumb and Sarah Palin is stupid and worth several months of SNL material.

The thing is with Bush and especially Palin...the opposition's view is so skewed that they were making things up and grossly exaggerating.
    2. xmarks
So you are saying your vitrol is because you think Bush would have had it worse. Therefore, you are attacking Obama. It isn't that you think was so bad. Thank you for clarifying.
    3. TheBigRuski
Oh, lighten up...I just want to have fun inside the cultural buzz!
    4. xmarks
Uhmmmm . . . . just wanted to have fun with it. You are calling names and trying to stir up negativity. 1.) how very christian of you and 2.) if you have taken the lighten up approach, you wouldn't have bothered starting this discussion.
    5. timethief
      @xmarks
You have said: This is getting way too much air time. The right is going to attack Obama on whatever he does and says. Their agenda is attack Obama and the demos. Turn off the channel until they have something worthwhile to say.

I agree with you and believe that's exactly what we have witnessed here. Perhaps not wasting any more time on posting this thread is the way to go. Because IMO continued online dialog, with attention seekers, who have established a pattern of sensationalizing stuff like this, and stirring up negativity to drive up comment counts is bound to be counter productive.

personally, I'm more worried about the fact that he just tripled the national debt and hasn't even gotten started yet. Printing a trillion dollars in one day? As if that isn't going to destroy the dollar for a decade - perhaps longer.

Obama can keep his gaff... I won't hold him to that.

But I want my grandchildren's money back.

Both libs and republicans passed billions of dollars in spending without even reading the #%$@ bill.

How do you blow billions and billions and billions and billions without even knowing what you just spent it on?

And here we are talking about a Jay Leno show.

    Pathetic
    1. rfburnhertz
      Exactly!

I'd prefer he keep making ignorant remarks and keep his hands off the economy.
    2. insideskinny
      Thanks you, good comment

Meet the top bowler in the Special Olympics, Kolan McConiughey. He has bowled a perfect game several times.

"He bowled a 129. I bowl a 300. I could beat that score easily,” Michigan’s Kolan McConiughey (KO-lahn Mc-KAHNA-he) told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.

    this isnt a big deal
and it's being blown way out of proportion
    he's just a guy
    and everyone is too sensitive
    1. TheBigRuski
Where were you during the Bush administration?
  45. PetLvr
Is there a complete video clip online with the interview? All the ones on YouTube that I see have been removed now - except that "teaser" one.
    1. PetLvr
thanks .. I guess that's just the special olympics part - how long was the entire interview? (I don't watch Leno)

An interesting take on the 'issue' by this blog author: my-sick.blogspot.com/2009/03/our-president-is-special.html
  47. Svelmoe
Meh- somebody will always be offended by something.

Not like he has invaded 2 countries, one based on unsubstantiated rumors, or helped create a huge problem with global economy, have held thousand of people without trial, encouraged torture and what not.....

No indeed - he's made a silly statement used to illustrate he sucks at bowling and people fall over themselves to point fingers and blame.

Seriously - get a piece of perspective.
    1. insideskinny
Also not like he is not putting my grand kids grand kids into debt for the rest of their lives. There is a perspective.
    2. Svelmoe
Ahh - 10:1 this is a remark regarding the bailout plans in the US, and that you find it bad.

If so - then congratulations for showing a total lack of economical insight and plenty of historical ignorance.
  48. sophielc
This was not meant to be hurtful; a slip of the mouth can happen to anyone and I'm sure everyone around here has cracked a joke and later regretted it. He has apologized so get on with it.

I'm sure he will turn his tongue 7 times in his mouth before he says anything from now on and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't do something in the near future to show that he's really sorry like legislate on something that would benefit the disabled.
  49. insideskinny
I believe that he is so arrogant that does not even notice what he says. For his sake I would hope that is it or else what is his excuse. Either he doesn't care or he is just plain stupid.
    1. TheBigRuski
None of the above...it is what's called an "elitist mentality."

I'm good, you know I'm good, I don't have to act good because it's already a given that I'm good...and regardless of what I say...you still know that a good person like me would never say anything bad intentionally. So, while you may question me, I know better than you, because you may have forgotten that I am good. So, pipe down, after all, I inherited anything bad from the previous administration. But never mind, I'm still good.

Maria Shriver (a Kennedy and the Terminator's wife) says the reaction to Obama’s joke shows there is still more work to do. She says laughing at such comments was “hurtful.” Mrs. Shriver added Obama’s comment “hurt millions of people throughout the world.”

Shriver, a Democrat, supported Obama’s presidential campaign.

Palin has come under fire this week for refusing stimulus money slated to help special needs education programs. Her same stance on funding for such programs as governor led to attacks during the campaign as well. Now she attacks Obama over his gaffe. What a hypocrite she is.

    1. csiunatc
What does that have to do with ANYTHING?

Are we at the point that if you insult someone and give them money, you are still in the clear? Holy crap!
  52. calais50
I have 2 cousins in the special olympics. One is a power weight lifter who is pretty amazing and has gone very far with it. The joke made Obama look really stupid, because most high level leaders know that if they have a controversial remark, they keep it to themselves.
    1. TheBigRuski
Thank you. That is why any opposition to pointing this out is mute!

Most of us have said something we wished we didn't consequently what can we do to support our current president let him do his job and place this statement behind him? I voted for McCain however it's time we all endeavor to work as a team focusing on making our country strong as it's been in the past by fixing our economy and not obsessing over statements we’ve all made at different times in our lives. I have a step daughter whose 36 Tracy is retarded my husband and I think it was a poor choice of words yet we recognize even her sisters will make comments which could be construed as in bad taste when they tease Tracy especially is she does something silly however always being there for her and loving Tracy for who she is. Do you question that President Obama seems to respect and love his family and our country or is it an act I certainly don’t think so. Consequentially let’s join together make his time work by focusing on what we all need to do for unity and success in the world. Mainly I hope both parties stop looking to blame each other for where we are today and instead labor to change and correct what ever we have to so we can move on because every minute we spend talking about a play on words is more time missing the real problems we face everyday. Let’s encourage the democratic and republican party to develop among themselves the team they were designed to be once elected to office and get our country back to being the best place in the world to live (after all that’s what we hired them to do) and I haven’t seen any evidence which shows me they are working together rather waiting for one or the other to make a mistake so they can plan the next success in an election for their party which is disgusting as it’s not the way our country was meant to run. So let’s spotlight our economy our housing and auto industry and the security of our nation to name a few real problems and forget a slip of the tongue (do you think)? Hold them accountable for what will really affect your family today not stupid statements which really aren’t hurting where you live or if you have food on your table for dinner tonight.

    My best…

I am glad that President Obama apologized for his remark... That shows good leadership abilities! I am proud of him.
    1. insideskinny
You are proud he apologized. What did you expect him to do, crack another joke. He shouldn't have made the joke in the first place. He does have good leadership skills, to a road of ruin with the bailout.
    2. csiunatc
      Ok then,

Here is to all the poor useless people..

      I'm sorry

And to all the morons who voted for the mental midget.

      I'm sorry

I must be a born leader. I can keep going all day with the insult/apologies.

I hope you are proud of me.
    3. TheBigRuski
The president has good leadership abilities...as far as community organizers go!

He leads a certain niche in our society. I will not name names! The guy is an alright dude....it's who and what he hangs out with that's the problem!

Way to go for Obama for calling it like he sees it. Making mistakes is a great way to learn. If one holds back all the time because they are afraid to make mistakes, the will not grow or learn from those mistakes.
    1. csiunatc
      Nice way of thinking..

Remember that this particular moron has that nice Red button to make misstakes with.

Come on, kids. If bad taste were a crime, we'd all be doing time.
