I've noticed that McCain is running mostly as the "not Obama" candidate. He seems to be hoping the election is a referendum on Barack Obama. I don't see it working.

Basically, McCain has decided to change from the "most Reagany" Republican of the GOP primary to the anti-Reagan optimism-hater we see today.

That's too funny. McCain as Presidential hopeful Not-Obama. Not a good place to be.

Just read and commented. The irony of McCain's switch to pessimism is interesting indeed, especially when you consider how the optimistic 1950s was his formative decade. Sour grapes?

I found your post to be well researched and very well written too. To this Canadian it seems strange watching the McCain camp trying to get elected on the not-Obama ticket, rather than promoting their own candidate's positions on important issues. To me these tactics are evidence of "weakness" on McCain and his campaign team's part.

Too true. The Reps always seem to operate on the "Who we got that's most like Bob Dole Model."

Sometimes it works, but only when the Dems respond with the "Who's the wackiest guy we got" gambit.

I commented too. I guess McCain has nothing to run with so he and his team have become running dogs tailgating behind the Obama bandwagon.

McCain is stooping to new lows with his comments, like "Obama is willing to lose a war to win an election." That's just low class.

Now he's accusing Obama of "the audacity of hopelessness."

It's not only low class it belies the fact that McCain is willing to act like a blow hard Big I AM when his so-called solution will end up sending even more American men and women home in body bags. What part of get the fluff out of Iraq does this man not get? And how more hopeless do Americans want to get? They have a moronic war criminal for a President now. Surely to goodness they don't need what this old fella who may as well be his clone has to offer.

I'm dumbfounded that this remark hasn't been deleted yet or irritated anyone. Guess I'm pretty intolerant when it comes to racial jokes of this kind.

    Great posts, wisco and firerobin!

This afternoon, I listened to Democracy Now and NPR covering the Obama tour as well as McCain's response. The contrast between the two was never more clear. I particularly liked the part in Obama's Berlin speech where he made specific the ways in which we and our world are connected.

McCain is looking more and more pathetic as he and his henchmen try to nibble chunks out of Obama's amazing presence and the world's response to it. It's ludicrous - McCain speaking at a sausage factory while Obama addressed 200K in Berlin! And the Repub's general tone that Obama was stepping out of his place by taking this trip. First they say he doesn't have foreign experience, then when he goes out and meets with heads of state, they tsk-tsk because of his "audacity." ROTFLMAO!

As much as I am not a fan of Obama at all I marvel at the genius. The best way to win the Presidency is to act like you already are the President.

What's hilarious is that McCain basically goaded Obama into taking a trip to Afghanistan and Iraq, only to find...oops, another video where he's being thronged by cheering troops.
    1. markstoneman
Yeah, should've been more careful about what he wished for.

McCain's plans were foiled by Hurricane Dolly and a Mississippi River oil spill.

Right. And the visual from the latter wouldn't have played well to his drill, drill, drill mantra. (Offshore drilling is the issue he had to "flip flop" on before he could start singing this song.)

By the way, did you know for the NYT you can click on their share button to get a permalink? The one you gave worked, but I suppose at some point it won't.

And the hurricane was over 500 miles away
