Oprah Winfrey is one of the most well-known personalities in America. I had a personal experience with her and admire her greatly (see the W-O-M-A-N post on my blog).

Curious what people here think of her - she's got the book club which I love because it encourages reading. Her humanitarian efforts are far-reaching (albeit strewn with controversy) and she does seem to be compassionate.

Thoughts?

I think some of power goes to her head sometimes...

For instance when she said, "Finally I can talk without a leash" When Obama won the presidency.

Finally I can talk without a leash? Are you kidding or..? She talks about whatever she wants; then has the nerve to say such thing.

If I knew any better I'd have to say that is Racism at its best.

It's been like 200 years get over it!

I'm from Russian/Jewish, what about the Jews that were killed and enslaved in the holocaust? We're not going around saying, "Finally we can talk without a leash"

Anyway, maybe it's the morning and I'm feeling a little pissed about sitting my office 9-5 all day everyday lol.

    Cheers,
    -Michael

LOL No I see your point and the whole Obama thing - well, that's just a whole 'nother ball of wax I'm not going to get into.

She does focus alot on empowerment and sometimes it is swayed towards African Americans, not that I can blame her. I think it's difficult for anyone to remain impartial, non-partisan and be squeaky clean, regardless of their background.

In general, I too can't stand comments that refer to a practice that has been abolished, is in the past and that no one personally in this generation or the last took part in.... again, a whole 'nother topic.

I need to refill my IV of coffee now - enjoy your office while I hate my cubicle. LOL

I think that she is damaged goods, and that her influence damages others. particularly other's relationships

I don't particularly admire little-screen "personalities", nor do I watch or follow them for that matter.

    She's there apparently, somewhere.

When I come home from work her show is on and I watch, it keeps me entertained. I admire Oprah because shes obviously a smart woman who's built an enviable career and has helped others. However sometimes I get from her a sense of entitlement.
    1. Agit8r
      it's called "elitism"
    2. sjtavo
I agree with you there - she very much almost advertises her sense of entitlement. When I heard her speak in person was way back in the day (we're talking 20 years ago) when her show was still owned by King Enterprises. I think back then she was more focused on women's issues in general....the more known she's become, the more of a crusader-type attitude she's taken on and can be a real put-off.

I stopped watching Oprah when she had to ask her audience how often you change sheets cuz, "I just don't know because I have people that do that for me."

wow... way to keep it real

LMAO that's hilarious - well Queen Oprah, god-willing, the rest of the world changes them weekly LOL

so funny - I guess I don't take anyone too seriously (I was once a huge fan of the Jerry Springer show because (1) I knew it was staged and (2) it made me apprecaite the reality of my dorm room). However, pretention aside, she's made herself into a household name.

She's said to represent 'Chicago' but she doesn't seem to get out much. I respect her and all but I'm not one of her 'zombie' fans. LOL!

I'm eccentric. I choose to rarely watch TV at all. I've only watched her show maybe 6 times in my life so I'm indifferent. I'm aware of her book club and her charitable works and think those are great.

Don't know her. She might be a raging bitch in real life. Who you are on TV has nothing to do with anything.
    1. sjtavo
you don't think, though, that hosting her show for the last 20 some-odd years and putting herself in the public eye has something to with it? Public opinion is used to judge politicians in polls, sway votes, pick winners for american idol. Few truly "know" anyone in the public eye, but everyone still has their opinion.

I wasn't looking for a literal translation of love or hate, just a figurative....

I don't love or hate, I never see her show LOL

I don't get to see her show often because it is in the middle of the day but, I like her. Her book club disappointed me a little when she was promoting "the secret" though, jajajaja. But, I agree that it encourages reading and that is a good thing

I loved The Secret! I actually didn't get it because of her book club (which I have not joined or followed) but on the advice of a guy I met. I try to subscribe to that train of thought anyways, a combination of things my sister has taught me, my astrologist and a dear friend of mine....I'm a cosmic chick tho so I believe in all that stuff.

With regards to her and the Secret, Newsweek had mentioned how she'd apparently been testing out the Secret and I guess had gotten thinking about being a child and blowing bubbles. And how fun that was.

So she finished a show, went back to her desk and there on her desk was a GOLD bubble blowing wand.

She waxed about how this was the power of her mind using Secret...

Only her assistant had given it to her some time ago for her birthday, and she never noticed it, and apparently didn't acknowledge the gift.

I don't know how true the tale is, but somehow this sums up the issues I have with the image Oprah projects...

Lots of power, lots of self-confidence but some of it in the wrong places... the ability to do good, but a lot of ego along with it.

Imagine if you were that assistant who gave the bubble wand.

Neither - don't love or hate Ophrah - nor do I care or watch her.

However, I seem to hate everybody that has been associated with her (and now with own tv show) .. Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, or any "expert" that sits in their front seats offering opinion and advice during shows.

Oprah need to be international, no one channel cable has Oprah ´s show, people around the world dont know who she is, only in Usa.
  15. aspotofblog
I'm neutral. I don't watch her shows. In fact, I hardly watch TV.
I suppose she's doing a good job of educating the public about certain issues.
  16. othellobloke
Apart from the fact that I want to bang her... I think she's done well for herself and more power to her.

For all you white folk whining... you hear it, you read it, n all that shyt about life for a non-caucasian person in America... BUT UNTIL YOU LIVED IT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE!

White folk need to read up on something called 'white privilege'.

Oprah has a lot of power all over the world; I think she tries diligently to use it well. Sometimes she slips; we all do; there is an "off" button on your remote for moments such as those, and believe me she gets the statistics and knows who and what people tune in for.
As far as the rest, I try not to categorize or generalize any one; that feels too much like "hate" to me. We have to work together towards peace no matter how large or small the group or discussion.
    Peace.

I like her on TV. I am not a regular viewer of her show. I have been may 4-5 of her shows. I think she is good at what she does. Her book club is great. I have often go to her site for recommendations. She must be good, she was featured as one of the Top most powerful women in a magazine.
  19. NYCGirl
I kind of think she holds too much sway over others.. But I don't know if she should be faulted for that, or if those who follow her so dedicatedly should.

    Love Oprah!
