I found a nice (a bit spooky video) on youtube about google, its increasing power and its doggy attitude towards our privacy. The video mentioned that google is into genetic engineering research as well. That intrigued me and looked into it a bit furter. Check out my latest post titled "Google into Genetic Research" (lsblog.org/blog1/?p=54). I consider this to be a bit creepy. I would like to hear your thoughts on this...

This is just the start - google is SO powerful.

(Hi google - we know you're watching)
GO! Google, Go! Google (repeat to fade)

We just posted about a site that buys DNA and the debate had started! Yikes...

    It's interesting.

People want personalization, but they don't want to tell services about themselves.

People want order instead of chaos, but they don't want anyone to be in control.

People want ads that are relevant, but they don't want to let services access information from where the ads are being displayed.

In short, people want solutions, but when you tell them what it takes to get those solutions, they start crying foul play. Most of the Google conspiracy theories I've seen are absolutely ridiculous. How is your privacy is being violated, exactly? The only information Google can access is:
    a) Information that is publicly available. Or...
    b) Information you give them.

Personally, I think the goal of gathering and organizing the world's information is very laudable. The benefits to humanity could be huge.

So true Jayneely, we've got to believe that and harness the power of the internet and what we chose to do using the medium....

    Evil laugh

    another evil laugh.

This'll make for an interesting discussion thread for sure!

Off course organizing such an information has huge benefits for humanity but controlling all this information means great power and absolute power (as centuries of history have shown) corrupts absolutely.

Google collects personal information from gmail as well and that is personal information you do not actually grand them permission to have. Off course I also use gmail as many others in here I suppose.

Having your DNA in a database optimistically speaking would be great for you because you could enjoy the benefits of personalised medicine. Pessimistically speaking have you watched Gattaca?

Google is a publicly traded company, so while there's the possibility of corruption, there are many methods for undoing it. There's also always the possibility of government intervention.

"Google collects personal information from gmail as well and that is personal information you do not actually grand them permission to have. "
Uh... so... it was just your twin sibling that signed up for the service then? You never did it yourself? You didn't check any boxes saying you agreed to terms of use and a privacy policy?

Besides which, Google does not collect personal information from GMail. They use computer algorithms to insert relevant advertising. The same kind of algorithms are used to provide spam filtering on every major e-mail service, these ones are just used to add info rather than remove it.

      Okay, track switch, DNA.

I have seen Gattaca, awesome movie. Anyone who hasn't seen it should rent it today. But it's premise is definitely a movie plot. Genetic indexing is still a long ways from genetic modification. And everyone knows that genes are only half of the equation, if that. Natural talent is nothing without experience and motivation.
