Page rank comparisons?

Topics: google, page rank, rankings
I finally got a page rank, and I found out it's 4/10. Is there a site that explains about what the different numbers mean? With examples?
Mostly, I want to know what I should be shooting for.

- Congrats on the PageRank. You are obviously doing all the right things and doing them well.
In order to locate related sites to your own you can use the Search utility. The search terms you can use are the categories your blog is listed in at BC as well as the tags. do not know of any "comparison sites".
PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web ,and the higher the numeric value is over 10 the better.
Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be.
Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page’s importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page’s PageRank is calculated.
It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results. It isn’t the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

How long does it take to get a page rank. I'm ranked at 0 but I've only been doing this for a month so I'm not sure if I should be concerned about that yet or not?

Question: How long does it take to get a page rank
Answer: Although there are exceptions, it usually takes a new blog 6 months to achieve a PageRank. And as thrifty has said above we just had one and aren't expecting another one for roughly 3 months time. This post I link to below will explain the 6 months sandbox period for new blogs.
Blog strategy: Google sandbox or trustbox?

Thanks both of you. I will not worry about my 0 for now but work to get better when they do rankings next.
I will be honest and say I find this whole SEO PR, etc. complicated. When I started the blog I didn't have much strategy. I wanted to share photos, link to my Artfire store that was new, and that is as far as I thought. So with regards to all of this:
Linking - don't link out to lower ranked pages - is this links in the form of widgets (like the BC one I have :-) and others), is this links in my blog text?? So if I want to say share info on a friends site and they have low rank am I hurting myself by doing that favor? Do links people may put in a comment count?
SEO and metatags? What exactly are the metatags? Is that the keywords you type in as key words, do those include words in title? I get this confused and messed up. Is it bad to put photography as a tag in every page if every page is featuring photography?
I will stop here before I bore all to tears. :-) I just feel the more I learn, the more confused I get.
TIA!

I have posted a thread in the BC New Users group on linking called:
To link or not to link
www.blogcatalog.com/group/new-blog-catalog-users/discuss/entry/to-link-or-n...
There are many other helpful posts there as well and you can use this link to locate them www.blogcatalog.com/group/new-blog-catalog-users/discuss
As for providing advice when it comes to basic SEO and meta tags you will find all of that is covered in posts in my blog onecoolsite.
I'm sure that you will understand that I'm not inclined to keep posting the contents of my blog posts into threads here on this forum. Doing so does not result in hits on my blog and does not result in securing backlinks.
In some cases, it has even led to members scraping the comment contents into posts on their own blogs and publishing them as if they were their own words, rather than mine. I resent having to devote any time at all to making DMCA complaints over copyright violations, in order to have them removed form the offending parties' blogs. Because this was happening in the BC New Users Group also I locked down all the threads and posted a copyright notice.
Please feel free to visit my blog and learn what you need to know and do to become a better blogger and to build a better blog.

@talkmusic
Today I have seen three comments that you have made that amount to posting a number like i, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

The other threads didn't have anything to do with PageRank so would you care to share what those numbers mean?

Thanks TT! Always very helpful.
I should have made myself more clear. I understand perfectly HOW page rank works. It's just hard for me to understand what "4" means without comparison. -
PR4 if you started in April...? Very good. Not unusual, though, I've seen that on other start-up blogs. PR5 here...been there for years without going up or down. My individual posts change their PR quite often actually, while the overall 5 stays the same. Anyway, nice blog you have, clean and not cluttered. The 'Neoease' theme is great, I like it, and I would have used it, had I not found something better.

Mine is 4. That makes me happy! It was 0, then 2, then 3, and now is 4. Tomorrow the world! Bwaahahahhahahahhaha!
