Since, in general, bloggers are the most savvy and cutting edge group in society, this would be a great place to generate out-of-the-box ideas on passive income. We all know a blog can be a form of passive income, if you monetize the traffic. What other online or off-line passive income ideas have you tried or think would be interesting?

I'm trying to monetize and build up my blogs...so I will be keeping up with this thread O__O

Anyways, not really passive, but I run an online avatar community and make money by selling collectibles for my user's avatars. We're still in beta, so we're not making much yet...but we're getting there

The fact that there is even such a phrase as "passive income streams" sum up about 75% of what is wrong with our society, not to mention the reason that so many people think they're going to get rich blogging. Income comes from GENERATING SOMETHING OF VALUE.

      Precisely.

Are you assuming my blog isn't valuable? MY BLOG CHANGES LIVES :O.

I think the only passive income I get is google adsense.

I do think you have to work hard at your blogs/websites/etc to get decent monies

No, Dovasary, I do think that there are some blogs out there (I haven't looked at yours yet) that provide something valuable and thus generate income. In one sense, blogs aren't all that different from magazines and newspapers. But generally the people who pop up here thinking they're going to make a killing in blogging aren't looking to work hard and provide something of value. And if they DID do those things, then the income wouldn't be passive (as you pointed out re your avatar site)

Right on! Which planet do these "do nothing and make money" types come from? On this planet bloggers have to "do" to receive income. Advertising does not spontaneously appear on blogs. A blogger must register to get the ads. Affiliate schemes require a blogger who registers to take part in them, and so on. IMO "passive income" is a misnomer.

I hear ya there. It's sort of the same mindset as kids who get a job and assume they automatically deserve a raise just because they've been there a while :\.

I'm always looking for more ways to make money online, though, that's for sure. Considering building up a blog to sell off, but with 3 blogs right now it doesn't look like a viable option :\

Doesn't that crack you up? What can I do which requires no work and makes me lots of money.

Income comes from GENERATING SOMETHING OF VALUE

Actually, that's not correct. Income has no bearing on the value of anything - only of the performance of services (which includes service of buying and selling products as well as non product services like consulting, blogging, etc) and the costs associated with them.

Wealth comes from generating something of value. Successful income generation means that what you are doing has value and that is what people should be concentrating in the long-run - (a buy-out or retirement strategy)

And .. technically ... passive income is something that you generate when you are not actively involved in the performance of this income generation. e.g. rental income of properties - tenants live in a house and you get paid on the 1st of the month. Although, in a sense that most advertising is done automatically and whether google adsense, text linking or banner sponsorship and income comes automatically .. you are definitely active in the process of generating those "rentals" of advertisers .. e.g. daily content, keywords, social networking, schmoozing sponsors, etc etc etc.

PetLvr, I didn't see this comment the first time around, but I'm very surprised to discover that you think that the performance of services is valueless.

There is no such thing as a passive income stream. I make money on affiliates and from hosting, that is about as passive as it gets, but it requires work still to make it happen, a lot of it.

If you are really interested in making money that requires no work, there is an option. For a limited time I am also willing to let you pre-order my Building Passive Wealth course for $199.99 deposit which is will take 10% off the final price...

Invest in property when prices reach rock-bottom; if I had the money (I still have to find that long-lost millionnaire uncle that will leave me his fortune in a will; that or win the lotto whenever I start playing) I would buy houses/appartment and live off the rent I charge people.

Another idea is to buy shares in a company that does research in renewable energy sources; these are bound to go up as most countries are trying to lower their dependance on fossil fuels.

In these days of economic distress it's even more important to absorb the fact that easy credit is no more. We can expect that some businesses will cut back on their advertising budgets and we can expect that the number of readers who click on ads to decrease, rather than increasing.

What I observe is that many bloggers who have advertising on their blogs and who complain that they aren't making enough from it have not paid attention to blogging basics. IMO unless or until you acquired the knowledge and skill sets to create and maintain a blog worth monetizing, it makes no sense to keep adding more and more advertising and affiliate scheme banners and widgets to your blog with the expectation that money will materialize.

Passive income can occur when a once of effort continues to provide income into the future. For example a book written 10 years ago could still be selling and providing income. An investment made feom earned income could provide a passive return. This return continues whether you work at it or not. So you certainly have to work hard at the begining but if your work smart you can reap the rewards for a long time to come!
