An Arizona pastor prays for President Obama's death because of the president's views on abortion, among other things.

Does he have a right to do this and how can a man of the cloth contradict himself?

    What a terrible pastor!
  2. jafabrit
It promotes a desire to see a president dead, so no I don't think he has a right. Free speech doesn't include inciting the death of someone or shouting fire in a crowded theatre.
  3. Anok
He's free to pray for whatever he wants. So long as he doesn't act on it or encourage others to act on it.

But yes, it makes him a terrible pastor - as praying for the death of people is in direct contradiction with the bible.
  4. melindaville
This is what gives religion a bad name! People like this pastor!
  5. aningeniousname
    I'm outraged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In protest I am boycotting pasteurized milk!

ah, being an non-believer keeps me out of a lot of trouble with all those interpretations of the rule books (i.e., bible, koran, etc) and all.
regarding the pastor, he must be praying for the death of a lot of people if that is his parameter. which means there are going to be tons of orphans wanting to know why mommy and daddy are dead suddenly.
the pastor will have to tell them because they believed in killing babies.
and then the kids will point out their parents didn't kill them, what is the pastor talking about?
and then the pastor will have to say something like, gee i didn't get this far in my thinking. i'll get back to you on that.

but yeah, he can say anything he wants. dumb as it might be.

      Interesting logic. I like it :}

Death threats against obama have increased 400% apparently.

Inciting the death of someone, in this case the president, is getting dangerous. Pleas like this don't go unnoticed.
    1. Hayseed
Yes indeed .. I'm betting the CIA, FBI, IRS and all the other government acronyms are piling on top of this guy as we speak.

Geez, I like Obama! The Pastor is an idiot

I find the whole tone of things lately to be terrifying. There's too much hatred based on not enough factual information and even less desire to rationally SOLVE the nation's problems.

We're one step from those Transylvanian villagers with torches you see in the standard monster movie.

So much anger and so much mindless fear.
    1. Timesobserver
You're right, it's been like that for the past few years. And people with blind hatred towards any president doesn't happen matters either.
  10. nothingprofound
Christ had a lot to say about mercy and forgiveness and loving one's neighbor, but nothing about abortion. So one wonders where Christians get all these ideas.
    1. Hayseed
Throughout its passages, words like son, daughter, child are used to refer to Life, and that includes during and after pregnancy. The Bible makes no distinction like 'fetus.' It's simply Life.

One Old Testament verse refers to blood as Life. With that in mind, remember that a baby develops a bloodstream very early in development .. three or four weeks?

Now, consider there are only three kinds of Life (defined as the ability to create offspring of its own kind). Those three types are plants, animals and people. If a baby does not qualify as 'people' then where exactly does it fit in the scheme of things?

      Hope this helps your understanding ...although it may raise even more questions :}
  11. Deray28
That is very Christian of him! wait, wrong! It's the total opposite. I hate when religious people get involved in politics. The worst part is that his followers will believe him and this might incite someone to try to act on it. *shakes head*

    How despicable!

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. -- 1 Corinthians 13

Love does no wrong to one's neighbor. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law. -- Romans 13: 10

You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. -- James 2:8-9

His good Lord should strike him and his down for wishing death on anyone.
These bible carrying hypocrites, are nothing but bingo fixing thieving bastards.
    1. melindaville
And child molesters. Oh wait--that's the Catholic version.
  14. stellak
What happened to Christianity's respect for human life? Wishing the death of those who do not think like you is exactly the complete opposite of what Christianity teaches. hes the classic example of those people that think gods hates right along with them.
  15. Agit8r
Does he have a right? yes

However if he's one of those "we answer each other's prayers" preachers, then...
  16. SweetViolet
I'm just surprised that the Secret Service hasn't paid him a not-so-secret late-night visit...

Pastor Steven Anderson looks like a creep! Forget him!
  18. FaithfulinPrayer
It's people like that that gives Christians a bad name. Shame on him and them. I pray for Obama every day, but definitely not for his death. I pray for things like wisdom, health, patience, and things like that.
  19. tonybeach
I'm not very happy about this! I'm sending this to Obama's people right this second! this needs to be addressed and WILL BE!

Well gang, as I wrote in my column, "religious" people from all faiths will twist their religions around to fit their own ends.

But let's remember that the majority of all religions do help society and people every day.
  21. nokkefae
wow...how crazy...It's people like him that make people loose respect for religion.
  22. jasonthebaldguy
I just wrote an article about this type of Christianity on my blog.. it is really frustrating to see Christians act like this
  23. ChrisMM
That pastor is totally crazy!! it s an example of stupid people that live in this world!! HALO!! Obama is the best president that country had had. Obama is a bit clown, but come on...it's USA, what can we say? XD
  24. gmoney
Yes he has a right to be stupid and say whatever he wants. I wonder what the Obama haters think about this?
    1. melindaville
Hey gmoney! Nice to see you again, my friend!

The Obama haters won't say anything publicly about this (as far as supporting the pastor) but they are probably thinking it and applauding what he said behind closed doors.
  25. tonybeach
Message sent to Obama and his people!
    1. timethief
Edited to remove orginal text, as Jaybetee has cleared up my misunderstanding.
    2. Jaybetee
I think he meant he alerted Obama about this preacher and his statements.

My question is if the Times Observer knows about this guy and is doing an opinion piece on something that happened about 2 weeks ago, isn't pretty safe to assume the Secret Service and the President's staff are already aware of the situation. I would assume they didn't need an alert.
    3. timethief
      Agreed.
  26. bettieblogger
I could be totally wrong here but I always thought that a threat to the president was considered "illegal" so to speak and that if mentioned in public, could result in action being taken upon said moron.
  27. lotusb
I think praying for anyone's death no matter what you think they've done is an awful thing. Praying for someone's death because of their views is even worse. This level of disgust only climbs since this man probably consideres himself to be holy.
  28. Hayseed
Another hater hiding behind the cloak of the church...no wonder non-believers are content to stay on the fence. But I digress...

Believers are directed to pray for blessings for their enemies. In that way, we are relieved of the burdens of hate and bitterness. Matthew 5: 44-45
  29. voodooKobra
What's tragic is that this delusional bastard thinks his prayer for Obama's death will be fulfilled, and in fact hopes it is.

    Despicable.

I wonder if he has any members of a militia organization in his congregation. (www.blogcatalog.com/politics/discuss/entry/militia-movement)

I think that Pastor Steven Anderson has put the US Government in a rather interesting predicament. As most people know, it's illegal to ask anyone else to kill the President of the United States. Anyone who requests such an act of another will be arrested, assuming I would imagine, that the person who is requested to perform the killing is real and capable of such an act. Although I don't know of a precedent, I would imagine however, that should someone simply speak into the air and ask an imaginary being to kill a president, the Secret Service may decline to get involved.

As for God, to those who believe in him he is quite capable of killing. The Bible credits him with over two million killed, and that doesn't even could the Great Deluge, Sodom and Gomorrah, plagues and other unique killing methods that he has supposedly used in the past. Therefore the question is, does the US Government believe God to be real?

Although the US Government claims to be secular, it has certainly done much to indicate its belief in God. Consider the following:

    1. Our money says, "In God We Trust."

    2. Our Pledge of Allegiance to our flag contains the words, "One Nation Under God."

    3. The third verse of our national anthem says, "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'"

    4. the words, "Laus Deo" (Latin for "Praise Be To God") are engraved on the Washington Monument, along with several other references to God and Scripture.

    5. The US Supreme Court made the statement, "This is a Christian Nation," in its decision in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, 1892.

There are other examples as well, including many quotes by our founding fathers and other politicians through Lincoln, Truman, Roosevelt and up to Reagan which not only indicate a personal belief in God, but stating that America is a Christian nation. For example:

    1. "Without God there could be no American form of government, nor an American way of life. Recognition of the Supreme Being is the first, the most basic, expression of Americanism. Thus, the founding fathers of America saw it, and thus with God's help, it will continue to be."
    - Dwight D. Eisenhower

    2. "America was born a Christian nation."
    - Woodrow Wilson, President

    3. "This is a Christian nation."
    - Harry Truman, President

And so, if America believes in God, who is capable of killing, then America is obligated to arrest Pastor Anderson for asking God to kill the president. If America takes no action, this would seem to indicate that America denies God's existence, which would in essence indicate over 200 years of misleading the public.

Someone became famous for saying he wants Obama to fail. Now how do you beat that? Come up with something crappier.. God always needed man's publicity gimmicks, be it islamic or church
  33. Onchong
    Sounds like imprecatory prayers!
  34. gerryPlanetEarth
Oviously this moron should not be a pastor...It would be appropriate to pray for Obama to admit a foetus is a human being and attempt to do something to halt the horrific 1 million per annum abortions that occur in the U.S.A.

Even if Obama was assasinated another puppet would take his place and maintain the status quo...
    1. timethief
Actually, the U.S. Abortion Rate continues long-term decline, falling to the lowest level since Roe vs Wade. The abortion rate is now at its lowest level since 1974. I'm thinking it could be decreased even more if:

      (1) Comprehensive sex education programs were federally funded, rather than federally funding only abstinence only programs;

      (2) The needs of the pregnant women in terms of financial support, food, shelter, clothing, medical coverage and participation in parenting programs were met enabling them to choose to continue the pregnancy;

      (3) Those who fund organizations which spend enormous amounts of money on campaigns aimed at stopping abortion changed their ways of behaving and chose accept the reality that whether abortion is legal or illegal there will always be women who choose it, and divert their finances to assist pregnant women by providing all the support they need to enable them to continue the pregnancy;

      (4) Those who decry abortion but fail to adopt themselves chose to have fewer children of their own, and to adopt unwanted babies to complete their families instead.

IMHO those changes are worthy of praying for.
    2. gerryPlanetEarth
The ideas presented by timetheif is exactly what the pastor should be praying and lobbying for...

These ideas would immensely help reduce the killing of the most innocent...
    3. timethief
It's good to hear that you agree with me.

I havent checked this out but if it is true that pastor needs to read ALL of the book he preaches.

Hey, look. The number of abortions is trending DOWNWARD as comprehensive sex education is introduced to the classroom. Imagine that.
    3. jeremyjanson
Now let's do the same thing for gun rights with gun education.
    4. Hels
Gerry, how do you know which of these abortions were honourable and which were shameful? I would assume they were all honourable, unless you have substantial proof otherwise.

Isn't it in the commandments some where that you aren't supposed to speak evil of your leaders? How about Christ saying "permit even this" as the single most disgusting abuse of political power in the history of the Earth, the false and emotional execution of God himself, took place?
    1. timethief
      @jeremy
Is this a scripture tag set up? lol (joking)

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
      1 Timothy 2:1-4

Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
      Hebrews 13:17

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.Romans 13:1

This clearly states that our leaders are ministers of God. He has sovereignly placed them in power and we are to submit to them and pray for them. So the next time a Christan hears a pastor offering his political viewpoint during any church service (whether you happen to agree with him or not), and especially after failing to pray for your leaders, you may kindly ask him to only do what is commanded in the Bible and refrain from doing what is not commanded.
    2. jeremyjanson
Yeah, you will find though that the greatest source of contradiction in the bible is the Epistles (in particular, we are told, with regards to unrepentant sinners, in Hebrews to give up on them and accept that they are damned, and in Jude, to scare them in to compliance) and probably the only source of substantive contradiction, and if you look at the histories of the Old Testament, especially the stories of Ahab, Elijah, Saul, and Asa, you will find that God is considerably more tolerant of profane authority then these epistles may lead you to believe, hence the need for commandments and divine authority to begin with.

We shouldn't blame them though, they were trying to persuade Rome that they had no interest (and indeed they had none) in undoing the empire, which was really quite profitable to them (roads, literacy and common languages are as useful to missionaries as they are to legionaires.) Still, "do not curse a leader of your people" is the second clause of Exodus 22:28 and stirring up partisan hatred and distrust for no good logical reason is certainly against "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Do it in the name of God, or bring God in to it in any way shape or form, and it's against the even greater commandment. There is no problem with appealing to the normal democratic process, which is your right, but be sure to always present rational arguments, and never spread a lie against a leader of any sort for any reason, regardless of your opinion of him. None of us are perfect, but that doesn't excuse any of us from trying.

I will say this though. This discussion illustrates exactly how right wing the Bible is, simultaneously extremely libertarian and freedom-loving, and accepting of authority and tradition.
