I don't know if a mac can support most PC games out there with high intense graphics etc... if they can ummm I still like xp lol

the thing is Macs no long use IBM processors, they now work on Intel, the only difference is the OS and the Design.
The last of the rocking macs were the Power G4, liquid cooled dual processors from IBM lovely.
Anyway now wat ur getting is intel shit in a mac, but steve jobs is the man he can sell u ur own shit and people will flock to buy it! -
I've always used a regular IBM compatible computer....
you do know that PC stands for personal computer, right? as opposed to family computer, business computer, school computer, ect... and that MACs are just as much PCs as are IBM compatibles? -
I am looking to buy a new Gaming rig in a few months and I will probably stick with my current Brand, HP so far they have good durable systems and unlike Dell my HD wont give up after 30 days lol.
High end graphics and video cards for it and I'm good.
I know Hp purchased the VoodooPc company and their pc's are in the thousands.. like 3k for a nice Rig.
I'm not looking to spend that kind of cash, but I will be using it mainly for gaming , Beta testing and Desktop Publishing and so I gotta save my money.. oh gawd Google give me a payout lol lol -
I use a Mac even though I've fallen out of love with Apple. It all started in 2005 when they sold me a real lemon of an iBook. Since then, I've had mechanical problems with most of the Macs I've bought. I think that all they care about now are iPods.
-
i have a lombard g3 laptop that i upgraded to a g4 processor ... a 17" powerbook 1ghz, an ibook (1.33 ghz g4) and now a macbook pro (2.33 ghz). we've had no hardware issues with any of them.
altho i did have a g3 tower a few years back which HATED the office i had. we hauled that sucker in for repairs every couple of weeks for about two months. worked fine in the support lab. gave me the question mark folder on startup in my office.
then i moved to a new office ... never had that issue again .....

ehh i think the whole apple thing will die down. no matter how superior the system is, it still has less than 5% of the market. But with all the publicity that mac is getting, we can only hope that pc makers will take note and follow suite with some pretty decent systems. (note the hp blackbird, the new sony vaios, and the dell xps)
mmichaell10-technews.blogspot.com/ -
"the whole apple thing will die down" --- ??? --- You make it sound like a fad. It that's what it is, I've been part of it for over twenty years now, and the Mac has been around for longer. And what does the 5% number mean anyway? From where I'm standing, I've seen lots and lots of university students adopt the Mac. You don't think they matter or will matter?

stoneman my sister has a mac, and although she does say its easier, for her to submit her work online for her calculus class, she has to go to the library computer that runs xp.
as of now, i dont think mac has enough of the market to really have enough power to make software and webware companies to make their products dual compatiable.
yes i enjoy the mac interface, its clean and very user freindly.
however almost everything i use my computer for, is windows only.
plus there is the whole deliema on upgrading. the mac you buy will pretty much have to be the same when new tech comes out, unless you want to divulge some pretty big bucks.
when a better graphics card comes out, give best buy your 200 dollars and simply plug it in to your motherboard. done. and with that you have made your computer that much better, even though that same computer is a year old.
and with a computer being able to double its processing power every six months, buying an non-upgradable mac seems very uneconomical.
and yes i do think it is a fad. mac has been around for 20 years, and people are just getting word of its superiority now ? wtf ? if mac was truly that much superior (and i admit, for almost everything, it is) than it would of caught on by now. With the ipod and iphone coming out, everyone is a mac fanboy, even though almost none of them own a mac. People simply idealize what a mac is like, and for the most part, never buy one.
The main thing i like about the mac is that with its new found popularity, hp, dell, and sony are having to up the ante and come up with better computers.
like i said before, i do love mac, i came very close to buying one, and i still might, but the "sexiness" of the mac doesn't override the economics.

"for her to submit her work online for her calculus class, she has to go to the library computer that runs xp"
It is possible to run windoze on the Mac. Earlier machines use an emulator. Newer ones can run it directly. That said, I am sick and tired of organizations that would restrict their people to one operating system. Your sister should be able to use a Mac or Linux if she wants. Her school shouldn't be in the business of mandating what she uses. Their use of that software amounts to such a mandate. I encountered such attitudes in the mid-nineties, but I thought those were the bad old days.
There is plenty of good software for the Mac, too. And plenty of major companies who make windows products make Mac-compatible stuff too. You've heard of Microsoft and Adobe?
Finally, have a look at the great shareware and freeware out there. Have a look at the open source stuff too. Have you explored www.macupdate.com and www.versiontracker.com ? -
my sister has a brand new mac, she got an ibook this summer, right before the lepoard drop.
i have no problem admitting that mac is a better system, however when a company, any company, controls 90% of the market, they will ALWAYS have the upperhand.
if i was to create a program, it would be much more cost and time effecient to simply make that program work on windows. so that is what many software companys do.
it seems like everyone here has apple stock or something, because everyone seems to have no complaints aginst their's. which isn't true. i know plenty of people with a mac, and they even admit that they're are problems.

Im a graphic designer and I use PC. Mac's are for noobs (that's why they make it easy to use). PCs are more powerful, enough said.
Macs are shiny though. -
-
i guess it comes to what your looking for.
macs are simpler
pcs are more powerful

I didn't know 'pc' was an operating system. Sorry to be nitpicking, it just annoys me every time I see that question. Pc does not mean 'machine that runs windows', it means personal computer. And thus a mac is a pc by any and all definitions of the word personal computer.
As for the superior operating system... meh, I use both XP and Os X (as well as several linux distributions) and curse at them all at times. But right now my MacBook running XP does the trick just fine.-
pc is the generalized term used for computers that run windows.
even the mac commercials know that. aka "mac vs. pc "

Why just Mac versus Windows? Has anyone heard about Linux? If for any reason I ever left the Mac, I'd be looking for a flavor of Linux I liked. There's a lot to be said for open source, and Linux lets a person do just about everything one wants too. Linux is big and growing bigger, especially in other countries.
XIII, your point is well-taken. I need to stop conceding the term "PC" to windoze, but it's really hard to say it and not think Microsoft. The identification between the two testifies to the success of Microsoft's marketing in the 1990s. Apple conceded the term PC to them, because they are a hardware manufacturer who makes good software to keep their hardware running. One long-running webzine addresses the personal computing experience in its title this way: _About This Particular Macintosh_ ( www.atpm.com ) That reflects a healthy attitude. -
I recently switched from PC to Mac. I had been a PC users since the days of DOS.
I'm a photographer, not a computer whiz at all. The transition was a piece of cake. I absolutely love it.

Shameless plug: Mac users here might want to join the Mac group at BC: www.blogcatalog.com/group/life-on-the-mac

I have both a Mac and a PC. The Mac is a bit older and runs a bit slow, so it is mainly dedicated to some photo work, bittorrent, and itunes. I do my work and blogging on the PC. There are things I like and dislike about each system, so it is nice to have both around.
-
I never used a mac before. I have used Apple Computers back in the 90's playing " Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" lol
They do look nice, but allot of the software and programs I use would not be supported.
All the Mac users a few years ago were the ones who had no voice module for yahoo lol.
I don't know if that's changed now, since I don't use a mic there anymore.
Mac is sexy, but for now I have to stick with my PC only because I'm a PC gamer, I need a cooling system and some powerful voodoo on that Rig. -

Let's see, I bout a G3 laptop in 2001. I included AppleCare, because you never know what will happen with a heavily used laptop. When it died before its time Apple replaced it, but this time with a G4. That computer is still working. That means I'm going on my seventh year for my original purchase.
To make a real comparison though, you have to figure out what all you need. Add up all the hardware and software and then do the math. The equation will differ for everyone.
That said, MM...10. Why hate the Mac? It's doing you a favor. You prefer Windows. Okay. Your call. But the strong alternatives out there keep other hardware and software manufacturers on their toes. You know. That whole competition thing. And then there's that whole personal computing experience thing going on too. Or would you prefer to have us all march in lockstep?

I think you're wrong about that. More windows users than Mac fans. But the Mac fans seem to be responding to your provocation. The windows users probably just don't care to respond.
By the way, how about knocking off the derogatory language? You said I was wrong to suggest you were hating the Mac, but your use of the word "fanboy" suggests I was reading you loud and clear.
I'm tired of this thread though. G'night.

Macs are high-end, super expensive, graphic-friendly computers. They also don't support anywhere near as many programs as PCs. However, the uber impressive graphic software updates usually come out for Macs before the PC versions. So if you're in a business that attracts clients who insist on the absolute latest, most expensive software you should probably go with a Mac.
If you want an affordable computer that'll do a lot of other stuff, you should probably go with a PC.
I've worked with both and found the Mac interface visually attractive but a tad annoying. (The dock thing at the bottom, specifically, and the tendency it had to activate when I moved the mouse anywhere near it.)
Also, yes, PCs do tend to crash more. However, the crash is usually specific to the program and once that's dealt with (usually doesn't take longer than a few seconds) you can keep on working with little trouble.
When I've used a Mac and it crashed I had to do a manual rebut because *everything* crashed. Including, occasionally, the power button.
So for me it's PC. I don't think I'll ever own a Mac, though I may end up leasing one when I start school. (Graphic arts program.)
Funny. I'm an artist who prefers PCs. -
Macs are too expensive for me. I cannot build one or know anyone who can, like a PC can be made at home. Cheap new parts, customized they way you want it and again CHEAP.
I haven't used linux either, would not mind trying it, but when the kid in me grows old I may look into it.
They need to make MACS affordable or keep it only for office use.
Did I mention PC's are Cheap? I like that new plastic smell... -

I've stayed with pc only because of my work teaching web dev otherwise i'd have changed 10 years ago.
The new macs are physically easier to move around if need be, they are the standard for audio recording. the fact that i can run windows stuff if i have to means that I get the MAC world which I'm positely sure is better but can still run windows apps. I've taught over 1000 people how to use PC's over the last so many years, written software and worked 50 to 80 hours a week on one for years. I'm o ver it.
the last straw was windows changing audio settings the other day when I was trying to problem solve an issue between audio software and new external audio hardware, it kwas a nonsensical error that shouldn't happen, it's the equivalent of turning on a fridge in one room and a gremlin turns off the water in the garden.. Most of the quality audio stuff is written for macs and then there's also video with final cut pro.
I'm over it
it's a non-negotiable argument in my head. -
I'm a PC and am very happy with my Sony Vaio. When I was a kid (12yrs.ago) my family had a mac, and there were so many issues. I think that maybe if you have an actual mac store near you, its a much easier system to deal with. I do think the new Mac Book Air looks so pretty. Maybe I'll switch one day...:)
-
the macbook air has an undersized processcor, little connectvity (2 usb ports) and no cd drive. while in the future, the world will have no use for cds/dvd like we have no use for floppys. We still need to watch movies on DVDs, as most people dont want to pay $9.00 on itunes for a movie that they can only watch on their computer (exculding the never used apple tv) and people cant even rip dvds to an .IFO file because those are 7 to 8 gigabytes, and the macbook air only has a 80 gig harddrive.(i have a 250 gig hard drive and its getting pretty full) With the macbook air, apple is forcing people to by many attachments and accesories to make it a fully functional pc. You will have to buy a $100 cd/dvd super drive and most people will need/ want to buy a new 160 gig ipod so that they can store their files on something portable. It needed to have either or, a dvd drive, or a larger harddrive to store your downloaded content.
Good try apple, but your a little to ahead of your times.

They both suck. One works have the time PC and the other it outrageously priced MAC . I choose Linux!! as far as OS goes.
-
I used PC for the longest time and then bought a MacBook in 2006 and never looked back. My boyfriend has a Dell PC and it's sitting on our desk not being used. He's using the MacBook now too.
I really LOVE it.. and will probably be a Mac user for life. I have gotten so used to Mac now that whenever I do turn on the PC... I kinda get lost because I am so used to using the Mac. -
To me, the Mac OS is light-years ahead of the PC. I remember back when I first played on a Mac in 2003 ... I literally was like, "What is this?!" I felt like I was playing on a computer that was from the future.
So now when I am forced to use a PC at work, I feel like I'm on a computer from the 90s.
(If you care, my latest blog post is my take on the latest Macworld Conference on Tuesday)
www.firerobin.com -
I honestly believe that PC still wins. simply because people in my opinion make more applications/ programs for PCs.. of course that may change in the future, but until Apple can dominate Microsoft. I still say PC wins.. besides certain games I want to play won't be played the same on a mac. Furthermore the PCs are now becoming just as nice as the Macs.
-
yeah but are you willing to pony up the extra $$$ for that sexiness ?
mmichaell10-technews.blogspot.com/ -
HOnestly if i had the cash.... I wouldn't mind forking out for the new Macbook Air... It's ridiculously cool!!
-
aronil, by the way. Macs now run both Mac and PC programs... Now there's really no need to choose, you can easily run both platforms on one Machine.
-
The pc will always rules, Why? Simply because MAC is not for everyone, it's too expensive and you can only find the computer parts on a Mac store.
-
few days ago I wrote something on this latest macbook at www.meroguff.com/2008/01/worlds-thinnest-notebook-apple-macbook.html
and that has changed my mind, I'm using PC now but my mind is set to use apple in coming days..-
if you're working with audio or design, the choice has to be mac, it's almost rediciculous working on a pc but i've had to so i can mirror at home what is at work
my life would be so much easier with mac, at present we've got j4 pc's here and it gets pretty tiring using badly written software that overwrites settings when it shouldn't, there are so many instances of this, color management and audio configuration are clunky on a pc
working with web dev, i think you've got to have a pc. But really with web testing you need access to both
-

I love my Acer PC for its hardware. But it came with the very disapointing M$ windows Vista. Leapord looks so much better, now.
-
id run linux on it. As long as your not using it for gaming, than linux will be a much faster platform for you to run on. Having a 1.5 ghz processor on linux is about equal to a 3ghz running vista. Both vista and leparod are making us buy these hugely overpowered machines to run them. I have an old IBM pentuium 3 with less than a ghz processor, and almost no RAM, but i have ubuntu linux on it, and its as fast as my new laptop that has to run vista ultimate.

Ni I'm still in pc's but I'll need to get a new computer any day, my work is getting too complex and I don't have time to keep resolving pc issues when I'm about to record. If you saw my setup you'd see why. The PC keeps doing silly things with my settings. When I'm ready to record it's frustrating to have to reboot, reset everything, unplug things, test etc, as a musician it's very unsatisfaying. I can do the same work in a much faster time without a computer but unfortunately O need to use one.
Garageband solves lots of of problems for most people. I wou;d never need it. Garageband wouldn't really integrate with my equipment properly, the only really useful program would be Logic, i used it for a number of years, it has a great interface. Apple swallowed up Emagic the company that built it.
-
izzy... as I said before... you can run PC games on a Mac now.
and MMichael, I record professionally - and Garage Band does a great job for me.
I have Alesis Adat recorders, crate mixers and a lot of other very nice recording equipment - yet I am using software studio recording more and more...
It gives you the ability to tweak every single note anyway you want/need to - which saves a lot of time recording...
If you hit one wrong note, there's no need to re-record the entire track... just go in and change the note in the software... I just love that...
"not that I miss any notes or anything"..... =) -
I prefer PC's. I'm on a Mac loner right now, and I want my PC back!!!! (not that I am ungrateful for the loner.....but my computer will be back tomorrow, hooray!)
