In PETA;s latest campaign they have a nude Amanda Beard (olympian) posing naked saying she'd rather be naked than wear fur. How does exploiting women end animal cruelty?

These are the people who asked the Hamas to make sure there weren't any animals around when they did suicide bombings, asked Timothy McVeigh to eat a vegetarian last meal, have compared chicken farming to the Holocaust and cattle raising to slavery. They don't seem to have many limits in terms of what they'll do for attention.

PETA uses woman and young ones all of similar body type..if they were interested in pushing a message of equality they would use women of all different sizes and ages as well as use images of women. The fact that they stick to a specific model for their campaigns leads me to believe that they are exploiting.

No MadameX, just because she has the strength to be an athlete, the focus to persevere through pain to achieve her goals and the will to sacrifice everything in her life to be one of the most accomplished athletes in the world doesn't change the fact that shes a dumb girl who can't think for herself and needs someone else to tell her she is being taken advantage of. Maybe she needs a husband, or better yet a pimp to keep her from making these awful choices.
Poor girl.

I won't disagree with you DM that PETA has done terrible things to get attention but that still does not minimize their exploitation of women or make it anymore acceptable.

No, only the hot, slim naked animal lovers. If they were disgustingly fat and costing the slim ones who slave at the gym to conform to the social meme that healthy people are hot millions in health care costs worth of tax money, they wouldn't be exploited. Of course, they would be exploiting those who actually take care of themselves, but who cars? Everyone is equal, whether you take up one seat in the aeroplane or three.

In my mind, Amanda Beard is a role model, ESPECIALLY for girls. That woman had excelled in mind, body, and soul. She is a great athlete, she is intelligent, and a caring person.
I have no problem with a smart, intelligent, strong person making a decision like the one Amanda Beard made in posing for PETA, or ANY smart intelligent, mature adult for that matter. -
All right look - I really cant get with this. They're not being exploited. They are told what they have to do and they are probably paid for it. If the models feel like they're being exploited then they probably will reject.
When the models themselves comply with the presentation I fail to see how that is exploitation. It may offend some people but in this day and age everything offends. -
I guess the whole idea is to get attention to their campaign and mission. But I feel the message is lost in translation since at times I feel they are competing with Playboy or even Maxim.
Recently they signed up an actress (Jiah Khan - www.jiah-khan.net/) who is a non-vegetarian. But since she is very sexy, hence pose for them. And I thought PETA was against killing animals for meat besides fur.
For me I don't care as long as I get to see ARTISTICALLY Nude beautiful woman in the buff...Say no to Fur! Can you imagine all these models with body hair! EEKS! -
How is being nude = being exploited?
Not fer nuthin, but for all of the feminist concerns presented here on BC, most of the ones you've presented have been gross over reactions, in my opinion.
Are you looking for things to be angry about? Because there are more important - and pressing - feminist issues than where or not a woman can CHOOSE to use her body anyway she deems.
Which is an inherently feminist ideal - you know, being able to choose, not being shunned for her choices, not being blamed or victimized by society because we have breasts, and vaginas and *gasp* we might actually use them!
For all the talk about victimization, I see more victims being falsely created by the people who think they should be victims than the women who have chosen to do whatever it is that has caused the hubub in the first place.
She's a strong, intelligent, ambitious women who chose to make a point with PETA. PETA is not in the habit of kidnapping, coercing, or forcing women to strip naked at gun point to sell their ads.
No victim here, let's move on to more important topics, like whether or not a woman has the right to make reproductive choices for herself, or how to empower women, or how to get equal pay.... -

So, the woman spends most of her life soaking wet, wearing next-to-nothing, and is on television around the world in a skin-tight wetsuit. Yeah, I can see how showing her naked is a big stretch. I mean, why shouldn't she have body issues like most women? Where does she get off, being happy with her insanely fit and toned body?
-
Preach on woman!
And who does she think she is, being a role model and espousing the healthy body attained through proper diet and exercise?! Huh?
I mean, the nerve of her showing a toned, well exercised body that is the epitome of health! All these young girls thinking about diet pills will now be inexplicably unable to stop themselves from going outside, and running, swimming, or exercising!

Why are so many people scared of the naked body?
I actually love the Amanda Beard for Peta ad campaign.
I think it was very tastefully done, it does not offend me in anyway, what does offend me is how so many people find a reason to bash organizations that try to do some good in this world.-
I find it amazing that women get offended when another woman chooses to show her body...and, in the name of feminism, immediately slaps a victim sticker on all the naughty bits
I mean, isn't being able to be free (and nekked!) without scorn or reproach part of what the feminism movement was all about? I'm thinking about bra burning and all that good stuff
Argh, I'm with your Sylvia, if getting paid to be nekked, or using your body to further a cause is exploitation, I can think of a whole lotta people who are going to be very angry when they find out they've been victims of an unscrupulous crime!

I inherited my Mother's mink fur stole. Purchased in the mid 1960's. What should I do with it? I do not wear fur and just am at a loss as to what to do with it. It is in perfect condition, but I don't support fur in clothing anymore. Any tasteful suggestions?

Nice thought. The only thing is that it isn't very practical. It pretty much covers the shoulders, as a suggestion and there are no arm holes. It is sort of like a shawl. Then there is the added possibility that someone might try to rob a homeless person with such an expensive garment. I wouldn't want that to happen, nor someone from PETA throwing paint on the wearer. I am always donating clothes and household goods to help the needy.
Now that I think about it I believe there is an artisan who makes teddy bears out of old mink garments. I could do that and donate it to perhaps, Children's Hospital? What do you think?
