I was just looking at a blog by www.blogcatalog.com/user/emilienotemily

She is a woman I met in Chicago a few months ago, but I haven't checked her blog out in some time. After chatting with her today, i gave it a look and loved what I found there. A blog with some great verses brought to life vibrant photography.

I wanted to share her blog with you because I just thought it was great and wanted to ask a question about it and art in general.

Do you think that the combination of two mediums like poetry and phtography, or film and music, etc. is inherently stronger than one by itself?

I find that I really like certain songs because I associate them with films and that I like films because of their exceptional use of music. I found that I liked some of these poems on Emilie's blog more or less depending on the corresponding photo.

That is indeed a quality blog. Know what you mean about the two mediums. As they are presented here in photograph and the written word it does not quite work for polybore, because you cant look at the image and read the poetry at the same time.

What would, for polybore at least, would be to listen to the poetry while looking at the image. Or alternatively have the words appear in subtitle form superimposed on the image.

What really excites polybore about the internet and IT in general is the ability to easily pull together multiple sources of media.

Providing it is done well multimedia (or polymedia lol) carries the extra punch that can really expand it's potential audience.

I didn't think about that it would be cool to have an audio option on a site like this to hear the poem while viewing the photo.

I like a mixture of both and they do compliment each other well.

Jay-have you ever heard of the Fluxus movement? It was an artistic movement which began in the 60s (influenced by John Cage & Merce Cunningham) whose main objective was to produce works of mixed media. Personally, my favorite thing is text & photo or text& drawing together. Some artists have used my aphorisms along with their drawings and I've been thrilled.

I have never heard of that movement, but thanks for sharing. I will be heading to Google in a minute!

The tumblr.com platform she's using makes this mixing easier too, assuming one has the stuff to mix.

Yes I like the combination of the two mediums. However, the black font on the dark gray background render the site inaccessible to the visually impaired. I cannot read the text (poetry) on this site, so I have two choices.
    (1) Click the RSS feed button and view the text and inages on a white background on the site.
    (2) Go to the site, capture the text and place it in a text editor and display it on a white background.

Bottom line: This inaccessibility means that I would really have to like the blog to subscribe to the RSS feed and view the entries in a feedreader on a white background. As not all feedreaders display images that means I would have to use BlogLines which does display images.

What about setting default CSS in your browser?

MEH ... I'm not so incline Mark.

Quite aside from making your site accessible to visually challenged and color blind readers,
        (1) an accessible site is more likely to be ranked well by search engines than an inaccessible site;
        (2) by designing an accessible site, you are also targeting PDAs, 3G phones, and similar technological devices that are used for web access.

Actually, tumblr blogs are already set for PDAs. Try emilienotemily.tumblr.com/mobile

Cool! Also note that she changed the background to a lighter shade of gray and I can read the poetry now.

    "Are combined mediums stronger?"

I think they can be, if they are not contrived or negating each other. My blog is driven by my love of writing, but I also love music. Some of my posts have uploaded songs that I've recorded which illustrate a blended creative journey on a particular subject. None of the music is professionally done and deliberately so.

All of my music is directly related to my writing. Like photographs added to poetry, my songs amplify the message in my post and vice versa.

I combine the mediums to also encourage other people with "sidebar" creativity to take the leap and bring their art into blogging. I would love to see music played and not continually judged on, or in pursuit of, pop culture standards. Music is a particularly critical field, and amateur music is often discarded as a viable form of creative expression. (It's either be a star or sing karaoke. Where has the middle ground gone?)

Blogging is a beautiful example of how the door has been opened to be inclusive in writing and journalism. Photography is following suit. I expect music will take a lot more work, judging from all the Simon Cowellish comments anonymous listeners enjoy leaving on youtube...

    TImethief-

I did some editing to the layout. is it better suited for colorblind people now?
    1. timethief
I'm visually impaired but not colorblind. Thanks for the background color change. I can read your wonderful poetry now!
