Ive been doing krav mag a type of mixed martial arts almost 5 days a week for the past few months and this past week because of meetings and travel I didn't do any. I didn't realize how much better I felt when I did it. I knew I was feeling god though now with a week of no exercise I feel like crap and am in my mood aint that good :).
Does the same thing happen to you when you stop working out? Why as humans do we not do the things that we know are good for us?

I know exactly what you mean. After the accident when I found I could no longer cope with an aerobics class (vertigo and dizziness) I found spots for my 12 students and began to do low impact work outs alone at home. Eventually I lost enthusiasm and stopped. It didn't take long before I felt crappy physically and and witchy emotionally. I've only been doing aerobics and yoga too for a week now and I'm just beginning to feel a little better.

We don't have any classes like aerobics, yoga or martial arts near where I live, so most exercise must be done on a do it yourself, by yourself basis..
I usually take long brisk walks outside for exercise, but when the weather is bad and I am stuck in the house I too feel sluggish and irritable after a while, which soon enough can turn into just out and out laziness.. not wanting to do anything at all.
I think exercise clears out our lungs forces us to breath and replenish old used up oxygen.. which gives us vitality and strength.. lol.. can you tell I am not an expert!

Hmmmm ... long brisk walks. I forgot to say that I walk everyday for at least an hour and as it's now spring I walk for 1 1/2 hours, I don't wear ear plugs and listen to music, I get off on all the sights, spunds and smells of nature. I also split firewood and kindling, carry a lot of water and do a lot of lawnmower pushing, gardening and yardwork too. And I haven't been able to do as much of those things as I used yo so I'm missing the benefits from that exercise.

The reason exercise gives that feeling of well being is actually based on neurotransmitters and hormones. With exercise, our bodies release endorphins (natural pain killers) along with other substances that improve mood and decrease stress.
If you've been working out or exercising for a while, you're body gets used to the effects of those neurotransmitters. It doesn't tend to like it when you stop because the levels of those substances drop.
As well, exercise does tend to improve circulation which also has far reaching impacts.

same thing happens with me. My friend Adam is able to tell when I have been too lazy or too busy simply based on my facebook updates... not sure if that's creepy or endearing

I took a Krav Maga class a few years ago. It's a hell of a workout. I didn't like that they allowed you to hit the other person in the nuts. Even though I wore a cup, it still hurt like hell. I'd rather be hit in the head.

Regular exercises are associated with decreased rate of depression. This is due to the neural wiring that could potentially stimulating endogenous endorphins which is a type of hormone associated with good feelings (Euphoria). This particular hormone is also implicated in addictive behaviour with OCD, Gambling and Drug addiction.

"Why as humans do we not do the things that we know are good for us?"
Because what is good for us and what we want to do are usually two different things.
I TaeBo three days a week. If I don't, I become lazy and easily irritated.
