There was a thread recently asking where do you live. Well, I'd like to expand on that and ask you to possibly post pics of your part of world and/or tell what is notable, good or bad, about it.

Pics and info about my home.

Nice pictures! I almost took a job once that would have required relocation to Boone, NC working with Operation Christmas Child/Samaritans Purse. We have family in North Carolina. It's a beautiful state.
    1. calais50
Thanks Tim. I used to volunteer at Samaritan's purse.

I love North Carolina, but am highly partial to Charleston SC. If I were more east coast minded, I'd love to push my pack to your area of the world, but then I'd have to come back west, because I have a thing for the mountains, too...what to do, what to do.

Totally gorgeous country, in the Blue Mountains of North Carolina. Chicago, needs no introduction, I am sure. But here is one nice site that people may not have seen:

I'll have to find or take some pics.

I live in Mcsherrytown, PA - although my address denotes Hanover, PA (McSherrytown has no post office of it's own).

Hanover is a German settlement, and McSherrytown is the remnants of the old Irish settlement on it's western outskirts along the road to Gettysburg.

Hanover is a frequent feature of food network shows as they travel across the country. Utz potato chips and Snyder's pretzels are based here. Also, due to the German influence, there are several "famous hot weiner" locations sprinkled throughout town (don't laugh).

Historically Hanover played a vital role in the defense of the Union during the American Civil War. The battle of Gettysburg is widely regarded as the most crucial Civil War battle, and Hanover was involved in a sideshow of that battle. To understand the signfigance of the battle, one must know that a major reason attritubted to the defeat of Robert E. Lee's rebel army was that they were deprived of their cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart until late into the evening on the 2nd day of the 3-day battle.

Why were the rebel cavalry (the "eyes and ears" of the rebel army) not on hand? Because a certain George A. Custer (yes, the same Custer who dies fighting the Sioux and Cheyenne at Little Big Horn) and Judson "Kilcavalry" Kilpatrick meet and divert the rebel forces attempting to join Lee at Gettysburg.

This meeting engagement occurred throughout the southern sector of Hanover township proper - including our famous town square. IIRC (I'll double check facts later if interested), 17 Michigan Wolverines were killed defending the town square. The action delayed Stuart a full 24 hours. Eventually he moved around Custer and Kilpatrick to rejoin Lee - but by then the 1st and 2nd day's fighting was over (which, if you've seen my responses in other threads, is in my opinion when the issue of the battle had been decided).

We also have the oldest stone church in the country (to my knowledge) - a jesuit church built in the 1600's to help convert local natives. The church has been officially designated as a basillica in recent years.

Thanks for sharing. It sounds like Hanover has a very rich history. My town has a settlement with a cemetery with graves from the 1700s. I could spend hours in the cemetery. That era up till the civil war is so fascinating.
    2. richrf
      Great little history. Thanks.

We toured the Utz potato chip factory with our kids when we lived in S. Jersey. Tasty chips. Love Snyder's pretzels too. We tried to get in for the tour there, but they were filled up that day. I like it out around Hanover, Mechanicsburg, Chambersburg, and Gettysburg...nice area.

Look for Vancouver on the British Columbia mainland of Canada. Next look for Victoria on Vancouver Island. In between the two you will find the gulf islands. www.gulfislandsphotos.com/photographs/
Our scenery is breathtakingly beautiful framed by the mountains on the mainland and of course the Pacific Ocean. The islands form a shape that from the air look like bracelet studded with emeralds. We have Mediterranean temperatures that qualifies the gulf islands as Canada's Hawaii.
    1. mariamichelle
WOW! Had no idea how beautiful it is there. I may make this one of my next trips.

      Hey Don,

Great pics! I see in the last one that your little girl has a Camp Lutherhaven sweatshirt on. How far are you from there? My daughter's best friend works there and is trying to get her to work with her, haha. Anyhow, just curious...

LOL, Borough Park not too many people even heard of it
I grew up on 15th ave and 53rd st
Went to PS 180, Montauk JHS and FDR HS
Borough Park was the cross roads to Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge

Mill Basin is a nice hood as well
    1. richrf
      Hey there Rozie,

Yep, I grew up on 16th Ave. and 40th Street. Even remember the address: 1583 40th Street. I think it was P.S. 64, then P.S 236. Went to Roy H. Mann and the Brooklyn Tech and Brooklyn Poly. This was in the 1951 through 1972.

      Cya!

Hard to find a good picture to describe my town.

Edison, NJ, home of the electric light bulb, about an hour away from Giants Stadium, Yankee Stadium. Surrounded by high end car dealers. Within a few minutes of Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes, Jag, BMW, Volvo, Porsche, Aston Martin dealers. Kind of unusual for a blue collar town. Birthplace of Susan Sarandon. Major arsenal used to be here in WWI and WWII, now it's a monstrous industrial park.
Population is about 25% Asian Indian.

im getting serious...i come from the phillippines - a nation that is almost in the geographical center of the far east -- my home city is davao - one of the peaceful cities in the country if not the entire world. majority of our people depend on farming so basically we are an agri-based economy. there are many problems majority of our people are ecnountering but of couse this is part of the reality - we don't really have perfect society but a least we are working to make everything right. by he way, davao city is largest in the wold in terms of area, about 2,443.61 square kilometers... he city also desinations to foreign visitors...
