Busy weekend passed, saw a lot of artists, even interviewed the amazing originally Alaskan (as far North as Finland is) artist - Portugal. the Man. All in all an amazing weekend. Anyway, why I posted this..

The Danish alternative rock band Mew is one of those bands that I personally feel music enthusiasts should not miss. You either like them or hate them, that's a given, but it's worthwhile just to give them a listen, if nothing else. Our new blog entry is about Mew, there you can download their new sampler track (legally) and give them a twirl. blog.freshtunesfinland.com

We're seeing Mew this Thursday in Roskilde Festival in Denmark and we're super hyped already. Then on top of that, some of us get to see them here in Finland this weekend, so it's pretty much a win - win situation for us.

Anyway, hope you give it a go!

I am so stupid I didn't turn down the speaker volume (I am using Altec Lansing with a sub woofer and satellite speakers)The intro knocked me off because it was too loud LOL. Hey Repeaterbeater is a good song. Very melodic, souring and complex. The guitar is reminiscent of show gazer bands but the beat is insistent and forceful. When I listen to a band music always comes first. Sometimes I don't even care about the lyrics.

      Ouch!

I hate when that happens. My home theater at home has a flaw, when you leave a disc in, it will start playing it when turned on, but at like 10 notches louder than you left it on. I've had moments when in some sort of heart-fluttering state I've sworn to never leave a CD in there again. But, it still keeps happening. Although an efficient way of waking up!

It's cool to play music on a home theater because of the surround speakers. it gives you everything, from the nuance and the intense parts. By the way the lead singer reminds me of Thom Yorke.
    1. freshtunesfinland
The Thom Yorke influence is surely there, but the vocalist does have quite a large range. Not just a whiner/squealer Personally I love their previous album " And the Glass Handed Kites" but I did have a hard time getting into it at first. It was one of those records that kind of grows on you, for me at least.

An yes. We've long had a plan of installing a 7.1 surround system at our offices, because of the effect it has on listening to music. So far we haven't had that amount of loose change, but being crazy enough, I'm sure we will pull it off eventually. And then there's the catch, it wouldn't be in the office space, but it would be in our office Sauna. That's why it would be so awesome!

ok... now though i might be a bit sentimental and teary about MJ, i'll be seriously UPSET! when Yorke kicks the bucket.
      fyi

Now now, there's no use dreading an apocalypse.

Super! hey can you list down bands from Finland that would be worth checking out? I had my American and UK phase. Now I want to concentrate on Scandinavian bands. There are albums that really fail to catch you at first listen but you'd be surprise how it stays longer on your player.
    1. freshtunesfinland
Sure, I'll try my best. What are you roughly looking for?
    2. freeatlast
I saw "soundtrack of our lives" Live years and years ago... 5?... and it was okay... very swedish? not extraordinarily impressed... other than that, I've got nothing
    3. freshtunesfinland
      Yeah, swedish. Time flies huh?

Always a risk asking the representative of a record label to recommend artists, you usually end up with a list of the artists they represent. Having said that, that's not how we do things, so I'll do my best.

Here's a couple off the top of my head, but tell me what you're looking for then I can get more spot on recommendations.

      Astrid Swan (www.astridswan.com/music.htm)
      Damn Seagulls (www.myspace.com/damnseagulls)
15 Minutes Before the Dive (www.myspace.com/15minutesbeforethedive)
    4. freeatlast
and they were so Not awesome, eventhough they ended up on leno/letterman. I know sweden has current and past good artists... just haven't been following of late.

but within 6mos, as I predicted, every hipster copied their hair.
    5. freshtunesfinland
That's true. Sweden has had a lot of great artists get out into the world. For small countries like Finland and Sweden, it is sometimes amazing how far some artists can go. I remember reading a study about the ratio of professional musicians per capita around the globe, I do remember that Finland was quite high up in the list.. I should try to find that study..

@freshtunesfinland I want bands from your country.
    1. freshtunesfinland
      The more famous Finnish artists:

      Apocalyptica (www.myspace.com/apocalyptica)
      Children of Bodom (www.myspace.com/childrenofbodom)
      HIM (www.heartagram.com)
      Nightwish (www.myspace.com/nightwish)
      Sunrise Avenue (www.myspace.com/sunriseave)

Finland is quite renowned for harder sounds and that's why it would help if you suggested some genres.
    2. freeatlast
which i totally need to follow... i have a soft spot for angsty thrash metal whatever... will check these out.
    3. freshtunesfinland
If you like thrash metal, then make sure to check this out:

  5. celticmusicfan
@freeatlast I think I am familiar with that one you are talking about.
  6. celticmusicfan
I couldn't agree more. Yes the first 4 bands you mentioned are very familiar. I am just shocked because I didn't realize they all came from your country.Sunrise Avenue is very radio friendly. Nice band.
    1. freshtunesfinland
Sunrise Avenue is a good example of perseverance, if I recall correctly they personally contacted the record labels over 100 times before they got their deal.
  7. freshtunesfinland
And there are many bands in the general metal genre

    Ensiferum (www.ensiferum.com)
    Stratovarius (www.stratovarius.com/)
And so on and so forth..

You can go to the myspace page, most popular music and choose Finland (Suomi) as the country, there you can find a lot of neat stuff

    topartists.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.topBands

From this page, make sure you check out at least One Morning Left, the nr 1 unsigned band
