I'm just curious how many people really read blogs totally about politics... beyond the obvious blogs/sites like Daily Kos, Powerline, Drudge, etc.

I write a political blog - to an extent I guess I don't care if people read it or not - it's not so much about that.

Also - I'm curious as to whether or not blogging affects your thoughts about political issues. So many people blog on politics and other domestic policy issues - I wonder now how it affects things in elections. For example - a combination of the blogosphere, YouTube, and talk radio snared Sen. Clinton's "recollection failure" on her trip to Bosnia in 1995.

Plus - just like 2000 was kind of the age where politicians got serious about having good websites - I wonder if 2008 won't be the watershed where politicians start having good blogs about what they're doing and thinking. The Hill has an excellent blog that some members of Congress contribute to regularly - but I'm pretty certain that that blog is just read by politicos like me.

I'm interested in your comments and thoughts...

politics is never my cup of tea

I do all the time, actually. I read them a LOT, but rarely will I comment.

I used to help admin a pretty good sized poli site a couple of years ago.. problem is, I can feel my blood pressure raise every time I read something political. You know when you can feel your scalp tingle and your hands swell, that it's best to move on....

The asinine responses and opinions is enough to make me want to slit my wrists or jab a blunt yet pointed instrument into my jugular - or better yet - someone else's jugular, so I tend to stay away from commenting.. lest I get into a huge e-fight.

Depends. I go for anything bashing Bush.

I read them, often with complete horror. The things people say about and to each other on some sites amaze me. But there's a lot to be said for blogs, both left and right, in questioning everything our government does. It's one thing that keeps us free. I'm building a political/culture blog right now, and hopefully will be able to launch it in 2 or 3 weeks. I guess the main thing that bothers me about some blogs (both party fans) is the lack of research. People will often make blanket statements, with no idea what happened over the years to bring a situation to fruition.

I also think political blogs can be a lot of fun to read. I don't get emotional about them--I guess that's just my makeup. I love to read Daily Kos and I also love to read American Spectator. I know the latter isn't a blog, but it is a cool place to go to read.

The Web connects us globally, and there's a lot of power in that and a lot of potential. I hope one result is betterment of women's rights in places where they have none.

    Good question you asked.

    best, Kay
P.S. Like your Trotsky quote & the riff on Decatur's maxim.

I am writing a most offensive political post for my political blog ( www.theoffendedamerican.com ) right now!

Well, not right now, right now, I'm typing this of course.
    1. rightcommentary
LOL! Well having read your post - I'm guessing you succeeded in making an offensive post!

Offended, if you write it it will be funny. I'm thinking I need to interview you because your stuff always makes me laugh. Love your blog. best, Kay

Jeez. I'd like to interview you if you're willing! Didn't mean to make an assumption!
    1. offendedblogger
I'd love it!! It would be an honor, but you may rethink it after you read my political offensive *snickers*.

Political blogs expect people to believe the craziest things...AND THEY DO!

    It's just insane.

I hate political parties--I think they should be illegal. They influence people to support stupid things that they would never support if they just stood back and looked at it. I've been a registered non-partisan for 20 years.

I HATE ALL A YA! PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Don't worry, I know none of you will listen to me.

Offended, nothing rocks my boat. I'll email you Monday. I've never written a column about a humorist. So you're a first for me! best, Kay

I lied. If one of my kids is bleeding, well, that does rock my boat.

      Sounds fun, Kay!!

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you ever tried.

Jack, this is why I voted you the one person I'd most want to have dinner with in the other thread haha.

I read major political sites via my reader, some might be considered blogs. I don't read small political blogs in general because most copy and paste their stuff from other sights. I post political opinions sometimes but most blogs I read, though they do sometimes refer to politics, are not political blogs.

You can find some very things out about humanity by reading political blogs though, other blogs as well, just by reading the commentary.
  11. Anok
90% of the blogs I read are political in nature, then again my blog is also all politics (with a brief exception for the moment while I work on a commission).

Do I think political blogs affect politics in general? Yes and no. It affects the general political atmosphere and popular opinion - it's word of mouth syndrome gone viral.

However It has little bearing on the outcome of policies and even elections because popular opinion isn't very popular with politicians

But, that's the short answer, anyway.
  12. kaybday
Anok, you got this so right: "popular opinion isn't very popular with politicians."
    1. Anok
The best part about it is that no matter which side you're on, or whatever popular opinion you may have - my theory works both sides of the political fence regardless!

Or maybe that's the worst part of it....
    2. offendedblogger
I agree and I want the long answer.

      Minimum of 27,000 words.

      By Wednesday, on my desk.

      Spellchecked and ready for print.
    3. Anok
27,000 words? I write that much for a warm up! Heehee.
    4. offendedblogger
Hmmm, you know, I believe you!

I don't even know that many words.
    5. Anok
Yeah you do - of course it's all curse words in various languages, but still....

I think political blogs are a double edge sword. Both sides only post what supports their political position. A lot like the media does today. So, I look at them as just an extension of the public opinion who watch only MSNBC or CBS or Fox.

I'm conservative, so I tend to read more of the Conservative blogs, but I always like to know what my friends on the other side are thinking... Right Anok...lol
    1. Anok
      Right! Same here Bob

We have good conversations though - and I think the crossover of blogs and commentaries is what separates media bias from blogging mania. Although the media has taken to blogging too, complete with comment sections - not that anyone reads them in depth.

Hey did I tell you that some conservative far right website asked me to list my blog on their site? I did, and it lasted for, oh a couple of days LOL.
    2. offendedblogger
Pfft.. I am an equal opportunity offender at my www.offendedamerican.com blog. (heh, well at the other one too!)

I am conservatively liberal and liberally conservative, depending on the issue, and unafraid to say it how I see it regardless of which side it may offend.

No political affiliation stands in my way, I am free to offend freely and I freely do so because I live in the land of the free.

    3. AmmoBob
Don't worry, you're still listed on my conservative site... Although readership seems to have taken a dip recently.... ;-)
    4. Anok
I knew I'd swing you over to Anarchism

      LOL Bob heehee
    5. offendedblogger
Anok, I must have always been one and never knew it until you came along *snickers*.

Bob, I told you to put some nudie pics up, it always works to bring traffic in for me!
    6. Anok
It's true, Chelle - I saw that the force was strong in you... Hahahaha.

Yeah Bob, where 'da nudie pics at?
    7. AmmoBob
I'm sorting out the pics I downloaded from the Internet of you two... There are just soooo many to look at, I can't decide...
    8. Anok
It's not fair to tease the BC community like that Bob
    9. offendedblogger
Haha, well I am joining in with some of my readers for Half Nekkid Thursdays at www.offendedblogger.com starting this week. For real!

Way more fun than Wordless *yawn* Wednesday!
    10. Anok
I had no idea you were so fuzzy, Chelle.
    11. offendedblogger
Haha! You mean my unshaven leg look? It is, as you would say, "Shexshy":)
    12. Anok

      Damn hippies
    13. offendedblogger
Yeah, scary thing is, I started to wonder how hot *I'd* look in a kilt tossing a caber!

That's when I knew it was time to shave.
  14. dembies
Seriously though, I read some political blogs. I'm not interested in the ones that go overboard and are insane and angry. I'm amazed at how little people really know about what's going on and how so many people who vote (gulp) are sucked in by smooth-talking pols.
  15. AmmoBob
See above... Hit the wrong box
  16. acousticguitarist
Not usually, because of the montoring of the Internet and data retention.

But I watch what the news is really saying, not what you think it's saying

How's the forming of the United Americas going...are they there yet?
    1. Anok
      Nope, we're not there yet!

      *snort*
    2. offendedblogger
How's the pothole repair going down there in Oz? That one road is a real b*tch.
    3. acousticguitarist
they're trying to fix it. They've contacted the world bank for a loan of 471 billion dollars, and last I heard they said yes.

I like the idea that there would be seperate countries in the Americas and not something like the EU which they are working towards. That's an ugly monster that one. I don't like the idea of the US being run from Europe at all.
    4. acousticguitarist
      Chelle

They've sent the firt crew in
    5. offendedblogger
Glad to hear the roadwork will finally get done down there hehehe!!

I don't actively look for political blogs. But, I don't mind a little political humor. Most of the current round of politicians and office seekers
    deserve it.
  18. PoliticsTodayUSA
I love political blogs, perhaps the fact I have one influences that a bit. I like to see what others think about what's going on in politics. The political scene is very interesting and probably one of the more popular blog genres.
