Here's some great news for wordpress bloggers. PollDaddy now has a method that should cover all versions of WordPress.
(1) Your blog is hosted on WordPress.com then you do not need to install the plugins referred to below. When you create a poll on PollDaddy.com, you can choose our new WordPress.com shortcode to insert into your blog post or static page but not in the sidebar.
(2) If you are hosting your own version of WordPress then you need to install one of the plugins.

It's good news for sure. Andrew has a sample you can view here changingway.org/2008/05/22/polldaddy-shortcode-at-wordpresscom/ -
It's a straight up process. These PollDaddy polls can not be placed in the sidebars so nothing has changed in that regard. All the information required is on the PollDaddy site (links provided above).
The polls are simple and flexible, allowing you to customize our styles to match your website social networking profile or email campaign.
All free account features plus...
Branding removed from Polls
Voter location and IP analysis
1000 survey responses/month
Features:
* A selection of skins to choose from or create your own in CSS.
* Advanced online reporting in real time of your data as it is collected.
* Deliver your surveys by direct link or website popup.
* Insert HTML directly allowing you to add pictures, video and more.
* Full foreign language support.
* 11 question types to choose from with multiple options for each.
* Export your data as XML, CSV and subscribe to your results via RSS.

markstoneman,
Yes, readers are allowed multiple choices AND also to write their own answer, if the poll creator has set those options in the poll, that is!
I like Polldaddy a lot, because it allows you to customize the look of it with your own CSS - so you can design a poll that fits the look of your blog!
If CSS is not your area, there are lots of ready-made themes to choose from, too! -
There are many different third party providers of free polls on the internet. However, it’s important to note the following:
1. None of the polls that use javascript or forms can be used on wordpress.com blogs as the software will strip out the code to preserve security.
2. Only the nexodyne polls and gfx polls display dynamic updating on the blog as the votes are cast but, the nexodyne polls are too large to fit into a sidebar so, they must be placed either on a static page or in a post.
3. The polls must be set up on the third party site and linked to from a text widget, a post or a static page, as the voting must take place on the third party site and not on the blog.
4. To create the appearance of an onsitee poll bloggers can simply create an image of and upload it into a text widget or onto a static page or post, linking the image to the third party poll for voting.

@Robert
You're welcome. Will all of you create sample polls to play with and give me your feedback please? Be sure to specify if your are either wordpress[dot] com blogger or a wordpress[dot] org blogger. If you are a wordpress[dot]org blogger then please also specify which version your are running and which plugin you used.
I intend to spread some link love around to all those who give me quotes in this thread about their experience using it. I will write a post that has my own experience in it and then add in the quotes from all those who try it out and provide feedback.

@zoom
I've wondered that myself. In fact I would never use goddaddy myself because I'm in the know ... lol ... nodaddy.com
Are you running wordpress on any of your blogs? If so will you do a trial run and provide feedback?

I've just put a new polldady poll on rob's megaphone on the right sidebar. It's titled "What makes you the happiest?"
I'll let you know how it goes. Checking out now. G'night.-
Okay, so I learned that multiple selections are not possible, at least not as you have it set up. I also learned I could add my own option, but that when the results are displayed, all it shows is 'Other."
Oh, and here's the link to said poll, which is on the left; robertstevenson.wordpress.com/

Yeah timethief, I have bow out on the testing too-for now, I've got SO many test I'm running right now. Did stop by the blog and took the poll.
Go Momma! I mean gomomma.-
@Zoom
No problem I'll keep in touch if you do too.
@sanjidas
What is this nonsense about problems? There are none.
(1) As I said yesterday you can’t paste the poll in the side bar of your wordpress.com blog. That hasn't changed. What we all do now is either create an image and link it to the poll or create a text link. That hasn't changed.
(2) The idea of running a poll is to get comments on your blog post so use your common sense and don't set up your poll so the readers go sailing off onto another page to comment.

There are some problems with the Polldaddy poll and here are solutions to overcome them:

Here is a bunch of other polling (and survey) services that work for wordpress[dot]com. You can read about different features each service offers and test samples of each one.

@Tech
You're welcome.
IMhO Sanjidas has been stating there there are problems with using PollDaddy when there aren’t any that I can find.
(1) The polls can't be placed in the sidebar and bloggers can use either a text link or an image link to address that just as they always have done before with any of the other polls.
(2) The idea of running a poll is to get comments on your blog post so use one can simply use common sense and don’t set up a PollDaddy poll so the readers go sailing off onto another page to comment.
I note that she published her own post on PollDaddy after she commented on Andrew's post but that she did not link back to his post. I could be wrong but it sure looks like a pattern that she has going. She did the same to Hillel on his GetSocial post where it seems she commented for the purpose of link dropping back to her addthis post. When it comes to the the wp.com support forum it seems she only answer questions that she can drop links to her own posts in. [shrug]-

Both Andrews and Hillel visited my posts that I linked to in comments in their blog posts and they both linked to their posts in comments in my posts. If they are ok with my "pattern", then I think it shouldn't bother you. After all, they are the owners.
As for linking to my posts in forum threads, I am sure wordpress would have banned me by now if that is wrong. You know better than me (IF YOU REMEMBER) that forum volunteers do get banned when wordpress doesn't approve of what they are doing.
I suggest solutions that are too elaborate to post in the forums. So I link to my solution posts. And no, not all forum help I offer contains links to my posts.
I was not aware of Andrew's post before I visited the forum, I wrote mine without the knowledge of the existence of his post.
I didn't link to what Mark said in the forums, but I am grateful that Mark didn't complain about that. -
The wordpress forum help reminded me of a post I have been wanting to do for a long time. I need help from you in order to that. If you give me the tips, I will link to you in my post for sure, don't "worry"!
Or if you like my idea and want to make the post yourself, then go ahead. I will link to your post.
OK, here's the idea, I want to post tips on how a wordpress[dot]com blogger can mark his/her profile as "inactive", so that in forums, it will be shown that they are (currently) inactive. Also how a blogger can turn his/her profile as active again when s-he is ready to help in the forums again. I have searched the FAQ and checked the "profile" options. But I couldn't find this option. I am asking for your help because you have already marked your profile as inactive, so you know how to do this. Besides, you give good easy-to-follow tips!
Btw, when will you be back at the forums? Turn your profile back to "active" again and get back to volunteering! I do understand that you have other priorities, but you are missed at the forums. Just letting you know!

@lieblingartcrafts
Your welcome.
P.S. I have visited your blog and admired your Victoriana earrings. Nice work.
-
@Robert,
It's cool to see your blog in the sidebar and automatically updating despite what Mark said in the wp.com forum.
YAY! Now this is progress.
-
@markstoneman
The Mark I'm talking about is Mark Riley, the head of wp.com support. He posted the link to the PollDaddy announcement to the wp.com support forum yesterday and I quoted him here www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/polldaddy-creates-polls-for-wordpress#com...
P.S. I'm on my way over to your blog.
-
For the blogs that I do use polls ... I've been using the WP-POLLS wordpress plugin over from here:
www.lesterchan.net/portfolio/programming.php
It just seems to make more sense to store the results in my own MySQL database and not on some 3rd party server .. also .. this plugin mentioned above only limits you to 20 choices per poll.
But - I'm glad at least someone else out there is thinking wordpress and thinking useability in the form of new plugins!-
Plug-ins are not allowed at wordpress[dot]COM, only at wordpress[dot]ORG.
Javascipt is not allowed in wordpress[dot]com normally. The polldaddy pollcode for wordpress[dot'com is javascript based. But the code is um..........wordpress[dot]com safe, just like Flash codes from Slide is wordpress[dot]dom-safe, although it is Flash code and wordpress[dot]com ususally doesn't allow Flash. -
Hi there PetLvr,
Thanks for link and the useful tip on the WP-POLLS wordpress plugin that I can use on my wordpress.org installs on my domains as you do are doing on your wordpress.org .
Like you I'd rather have the results stored in my own MySQL database and not on some 3rd party server too.
-
That Lester Chan also has widgets, and while you are there .. I'm also using the WP-PostRatings plugin on my BattlingForHealth.com sites, and a few have the WP-Print plugin (now also compatible with wP2.5)
