I heard a commercial on the radio this morning for McDonalds. It was about their new cafe style French roast coffees or something similar. The guy in the ad said the coffee made him feel French. I can't remember every detail, but here is the gist.

He was watching French art films, wearing a beret, and (here is the potentially offensive part) not bathing for a week! I don't know where that stereotype came from.

Of course it's not offensive to me, since I'm not French, but damn, doesn't McDonalds have restaurants in France? If I were them, I'd be afraid of ticking them off.

It would be funny if there was a commercial in France about American cofee where a French guy says the coffee makes him feel American, so he puts on a cowboy hat, watches NASCAR racing, and gains 100 lbs. Lol! That would be hilarious.

A hundred pounds? Try 300 lbs! It'd be funny, but I just can't imagine French people wanting anything American tasting, sounding, looking or feeling. Of course, these are the people who don't like peanut butter, so how great can they be? lol (I kid my French blogger friends)

Very true. My boyfriend is in France for a month, and he loves the food so much, I wonder if I will get him back, lol.

LOL!!! Thats funny...yea it's a bit offensive. But there are so many commercial offenses I stopped getting upset. Does anyone remembe the Mercedes commercial with all the black people riding in the new Mercedes and the song "Movin On Up" was playing? As if black people have to "move up" in order to get a cheap ass Mercedes...? Yea...I'm not surprised McDonalds wasn't more sensitive to the French (who I'm pretty sure bathe).

OMG. I can't believe Mercedes did that.

Yea, I wrote a page long letter and got 100 people to sign a petition, and I'm not saying it's was because of us but they stopped running it after about a week or two.

I don't know how it is now, but in the 80s one of my friends had a foreign exchange student from France, and his guest actually told us that the best thing about America was being able to shower every day. He actually took multiple showers a day because it was such an unusual treat for him to be able to do so at will. I don't know the reason--I think it had something to do with the water supply--but the norm (at least, according to this one French native) was to bathe once a week. No idea whether or not that was universal or is still accurate, but it's easy to see where the image came from.

Thanks for the info, MX. Maybe there used to be some creedence to the stereotype then.

Anyone who'll use a creepy-@$$ clown to lure children to eat shite is offensive to begin with. (I do like your idea, though!)

      LMAO!!! Good point!!!!!

True. At least they got rid of the hamburglar. I bet the nation's larceny rate went down 50% when they did that.

I think people in general get offended to easily.
    1. LazyThirdEye
Wow, that was kind of a bigoted thing to say. I'm really upset now.
    2. BlueSunshine
      Agreed 100% PotatoChef.

However, I myself prefer carrots so your screen name offends me.

Well, when anyone ever drinks a shot of tequila, you KNOW that they will try and speak with a Mexican accent, but I never heard a Hispanic person get offended.
    1. calais50
I'm not saying they should get offended. I'm just saying that a business savvy company like the big M usually avoids such things. Tequila was invented in Mexico, but I don't think not bathing was invented in France, lol.

      OUCH!!!!

Sounds like someone is cranky without her lover half way around the world. LOL

You don't have the right to not be offended. Us here in the states have something called freedom of speech and freedom of press. If you have a complaint, take it up with your sewing circle, phone up the guy that you're calling your boyfriend this week, or write a blog about it..I'm sure we'll all come to your side in your time of need.

    yawn.
    1. calais50
you misunderstood the intent of the thread. Nothing offends me. I'm just pointing out a humorous rarity in the world today-advertising poking fun at certain groups. Yawn on people yawning about offendednessissness. Oh and yawn on trolls.

Why do these topics always become related to patriotism? Cheese and rice...
    3. lotusb
I don't take her thread as a "complaint" but I do see it as her free expression which you've noted she has a right to. Why do SOME people always preach about rights and then get pissy when someone actually takes advantage of it..? Also....OMG I had a troll just like that... MEMORIES!!!!

I remember this guy, Lotus. I haven't seen him in a while, but he used to come around the BC boards trolling all the time.
BTW, Lotus. I never did understand the allure of those troll dolls and why exactly they were naked, lol.

"Us here in the states have something called freedom of speech and freedom of press."

Actually, commercial speech does not enjoy the same protections as other types of speech.

McDonalds in France actually serves wine. Mmm...McWine.
    1. calais50
I've heard that wine is cheaper there than soft drinks. McHangover
    2. mattiasx
McBeer is sold in Germany. Surprise!

Let's face it we all take the mick out of each other and it's good to have fun but there are cases like the Merc ad which should be dealt with because it's not humorous but hurtful. There#s a fine line.

hahah really they really seel mcbeer?? thats so funny.. but like you said surprise. haha anyways i dont think its offensive.. its anything is offersive to us amercians because it shows how simnple minded we can be haha.. i know its a joke but im sure if people in france saw this. i dont think they will take it offenisvely.

Well, if you tick off the NASCAR people all you have to do is hop in your car and turn right. They'll never catch you.
