I'm surprised by how many people strongly oppose sending a kid to private school over public schools. What's your take on it,

I went to a public school and therefore my views would be biased.

However, if you ask me, it's all about the teachers and how they teach.

When it comes to the quality of teaching in public schools, the location and the funding will always affect it.

For instance, I may have attended a public school but it was located in an upper class neighborhood by the beach and the school had the funding to afford great teachers. In fact, I was in their GATE program.

Other public schools in the city which were located in lesser privileged neighborhoods did not have as many funds and therefore had limited options on who they could hire.

      what does GATE mean?

GATE = Gifted and Talented Education

Basically, it's when you take the really smart kids with potential and place them in an advanced class that happens to move at a faster pace than a regular one. These classes tend to cover more topics/content than a regular course.

      For example...

Students who were in the same grade level were just learning how to multiply and divide whole numbers when we were multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. When they moved on to fractions and decimals, we had already covered exponents.

I went to private primary and secondary school but only because my godmother (a nun) pushed my parent to send me to private schools. I don't think there are any differences (apart from the price). My parents openly say today that if they had to do it again, they would send all their kids to public schools. My kids are in a public school and even though they are only at the beginning of their school life, I am very happy with the standard of education they are receiving; they have excellent teachers and they learn not only what's on the curriculum but also the basics of recycling and how to be more environmentally friendly, which should be an important part of nowadays' education. oh yeah, and it's free!

depends. I live in NYC and I thank god I live in a good school district with a good public school otherwise I would be opting for private school.

That said, if I had the money, would I be going the private school route? I am not so sure. I think my public school is pretty good but you can get sucked into the aestetics of private school Lets face it. private schools have nicer facilities.

I went to a private school until 8th grade but it was in Hobart, I went to public school when we came here but the schools in the county I went to school in are some of the best in the country. most are new and state of the art, otherwise I bet my parents would have insisted I go private, my brother attended private school throughout his life.

In this country more often than not, and there are exceptions, the better public schools are in higher socioeconomic areas, that is the travesty of public school in this country.

I've been to both. I'll take public schools. (also depends on the area, and school)

Public schools mostly get more homework while a private school is more expensive. I go to private school.

i technically went to both and i say technically because i spent very little time at each school. much to my parents' chagrin, i skipped classes almost daily because they bored me, the teachers suffered from inferiority complexes (which only entertained me temporarily), and the students were all boorish and aloof. it didn't matter that the school was public or private. sadly, you'll find the same types wherever you go. if i could do it all over again, i would have avoided school altogether and spent more time at the local library where education is free (unless you abuse your borrowing privileges).

Public is cool, but in Ontario, Canada, if private schools were regulated by the province and I could afford it, I would opt for private. Just more opportunities in a private school. Funny though, here in Canada, all our Universities are public. So does it really matter in the end? I went to public school and ended up at one of the best universities in the country. Who's to say..
