Just testing the waters to see what kind of post and/or present punk rock fans there are out there in BC land and what kind of obscure, or not obscure, punk rock bands you do, or did, listen to?
And of course, the age old question... how do you define punk? All irreverence and reverence welcome.

yeah, i got the staples on my ipod--Ramones, Pistols. I coulda guessed it would be NO for the guy above!

There's nothing cooler than having your four-year-old running around trying to sing Blitzkrieg Bop. I never much cared for the Pistols, myself, though. (Which doesn't keep me from thinking, "I know what I want and I know how to get it," after your post.)
I have a great CD called "Punk You" that I can't play when the kids are around, though. Attack of the Giant Ants and Deutscher Girls are okay but Orgasm Addict and Oh Bondage (Up Yours) would require too much explanation. Hubby and I save those songs for driving around when they're at grandma's.
We get a little rowdy with Rancid and Bouncing Souls, then mellow out with the Ramones. -
I've got the punk rock love. I'm listening to the Misfits as I type. I have an rather large updated music player on my website that has amongst everything else has Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Ramones, Fugazi & Iggy Pop in the mix right now.

Germs
Dickies
Adolescents
The Slits....etc, etc, etc...
I used to be what "they" termed as a "skate punk"...search and destroy!
I look back and think of all the teen angst I had way back when, I'm lucky that Punk Rock was around because it was a great creative and emotional outlet for me.
Great discussion;) -
also love the so called post-punk:
B-52's
Joy Division
Bowie
Bauhaus
The Jam
Smiths
The Cure
Sister of Mercy
Nick Cave
Jesus and Mary Chain etc. etc. etc.......
I forgot to mention "The Buzzcocks" on the punk list. I'm a list lover, sorry. -
Yes, yes, and yes! I am a huge fan of the punk rock/hardcore/oi/ska scene.
I tend to favor local bands for the obscure stuff....
Lets see though, what do I listen to on a regular basis and/or on my favorite list...(in no particular order)
Exploited (punk)
Ramones (punk, always)
Sticky little Fingers (punky-oi Once in a while)
Anti-Heroes (hardcore-oi)
Minor Threat (hardcore/youth crew)
Black Flag (Punk/ hardcore)
Dead Kennedys (punk of course)
CockSparrer (oi/ punk)
Dropkick Murphys (Hardcore/oi)
Oi Palloi (Scottish punk!)
Velvet Underground (Thats like the grandfather of punk)
Just recently began listening to Johnny Cash in earnest (The godfather of punk believe it or not)
Social Distortion (punk-esque)
Madball (Hardcore)
Reagan Youth (punk)
Tilt (Girl powered hardcore)
Bikini Kill (Scary girl hardcore)
The Donnas (Girly girl pop punk)
Fear (punk)
Operation Ivy (AKA "op-ivy", punk/oi)
Mephaskaphalese (ska)
Desmond Dekker (ska)
Toasters (ska)
Honestly, the list just goes on and on. (and on...)
I'm sure I've forgotten at least a hundred bands, never mind the local stuff... -

I'd not have classified the Stray Cats as punk. I loved 'em, but never thought of them as punk. Too smooth.
Then Brian Setzer lead to a whole revival of my favorite big band sound and, between that and third-wave ska, I've been in horn section heaven for 15 years.
Years ago, I was called Punk Rock Girl at work after the Dead Milkmen song, as I introduced my co-workers to them. The phrase, "Pow! He was decapitated!" pops up frequently in our house. I didn't like much of their later stuff, though they definitely know how to name a song, but Beelzebubba still slays me.

Dead Kennedys
Dead Milkmen
Plan 9
Pil
Sex Pistols
Clash
Smiths
NY Dolls
Was more of an industrial head though. -
I like old school punk. Dead Kennedys, TSOL, The Clash, X.
To me, the best punk was a mixture of music and message. -
Big fan of the D.C. punk scene-- especially the bands that came in the wake of "Revolution Summer" in 1986-- when the music and the lyrics became more complex: Beefeater, Fugazi, Shudder to Think, the Holy Rollers were all favorites of mine.
Also liked a lot of the early NYC bands like Television, Richard Hell, Patti Smith Group, et cetera.
Given that list, I am sure that most of the others in this discussion can easily figure out what other bands I like.
Also liked the Minutemen/fIREHOSE
The thing that annoys me about kids today is that their idea of "what is punk" is so limited and formulaic. Punk should be about freedom. -
Have a listen to some friends of mine, all born and breed in the old school midwest scene, average age, 38...
